SPOILER ALERT:Mortal Kombat X DIGITAL COMIC DISCUSSION

I find this all very interesting... unless he dies next issue

Um no? Is it suppose to? It's not exactly something you wouldn't hear people say....

Alright, excuse me for thinking not all black people say "dem" instead of "them" or "those." For what it is worth, though, PGD42 (who's been around this site for longer than both of us, it seems) agrees with me when it comes to Jax and Cyborg sounding stereotypical. If you don't agree, though, it is whatever. Just stating my opinion.

What's wrong with a stereotypical black man? Is there something wrong with being a black man, talking like that? Am I wrong in saying alot of Afro-American men talk like that? Is it bad that they talk like that?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with Jax talking like a "stereotypical" Afro-American man. It gives him character. He is a strong black man with a high IQ who knows robotics/cybernetics/bionics and is a damn good soldier! Why should that implicate that he has to talk like a "white" man, or any different than what he does now? Do you imply that only unintelligent black men talk like that?

Jax is a black man and he talks like a black man, as stereotypical it may be. But there's nothing wrong with it. The only problem is that YOU guys make it a problem.

Fine. Though I'm not sure what Cyborg has to do with anything. He just sounds like he does in the Teen Titans cartoon

Gosh. The writing in this comic is dreadful. lol

Still entertaining, though... I guess.

Things I liked :

-Seeing Raiden and Fujin together.
-Johnny and Sonya don't seem to be together, which is nice. It doesn't really work.
-Kotal Kahn isn't a mindless lunatic like I thought he would be.
-Cowboy man. Yes please.
-Jacqui doesn't seem to be a stereotypical character like her father.

Things I don't like:

-How sexualized Cassie is in the comic. It's feels wrong.
-The writing is incredibly lackluster.
-Sonya is a terrible diplomat.
-Raiden is a hot mess.
-Frost couldn't possibly look any more boring. Also, why the hell is she even there?

I guess I'm not taken a back by Jax because I talk like that.

Really?

-Works for Kotal Kahn? Check.
-Looks just like like he might native to Earthrealm, with his more human looks and huge amounts of firearms? Check.
-Has a cowboy look that would fit with Salazar being described as probably American, as well as a guy who's been wandering Outworld for years? Check.
-Is quiet and reserved like Salazar? Check.
-Is some sort of weapons expert? Once again, with all of those firearms... check.

That is a lot of similarities, especially for two guys who both work for Kotal Kahn.

Man, I am really digging that design, loving it. I noticed he did not get involved in the fight which indicates he is as reserved as his description read in the casting call. I am hoping that he is a fire-arms weapon expert, and utilizes multiple different types of gun-based weaponry like a certain character from Samurai Showdown did with his 13 swords (amaaazinggg) .

Don't like the name Erron Black, and even in Kahn's line in the comic, the delivery of his name as awkward next to D'vorrah.
I am assuming they'll either go with Salazaar or maybe just Black as his name.

And shout out the new Kahn who curve balled every MK fan , not a complete a s s hat villain. totally shocked.

Didn't really see the sexualization of Cassie or Jacqui in the comic, but I do agree that Jacqui has fallen rather flat as a character so far as her personality is that of the safe friend. We were better off with Jax. Who is really just an average black man with metal arms, really.

I am not saying Jax should "talk like a white man" (whatever that means). He IS educated, though, so why is he saying "dem" instead of "them?" Is it just because he's African American? I'm not implying anything, I'm simply stating my disapproval of his vernacular. I am but one fan, correct? This is a forum, too, correct? I could have sworn I had the right to vocalize my thoughts on the series here but maybe I'm wrong. Still, it does not change the fact that stereotyping is a form of prejudice. Before you claim that it isn't, I suggest that you view the Oxford Dictionary definition of the word. If that is not enough, I invite you to look up other respected dictionary definitions or, better yet, just randomly ask your friends, "Hey, man, do you think stereotypes are a good thing?"

But, I ask you this: What does a black man sound like? Are you really trying to tell me a black man or a white man sound like something specific based on their racial identities?

Cyrax had his own stereotypical qualities. Though when it comes to the jive, I guess he is the exception.

And what were those "stereotypical qualities" exactly?

Was Darrius talking jive as well? He had that Black Dynamite costume, but I don't remember him talking jive in the middle of matches.

And what about Forest Fox?

I think he's referring to the fact that Cyrax had an accent and dreads. The difference there, though, is that Cyrax had more of an authentic cultural identity. He was from Botswana, if I am not mistaken. I think NRS tried to model him after Google images they found of the men. Jax is a different case, though, because he's an African American and they stuck him with a voice and vocabulary that sounds like he'd be the lead role in a damn Pam Grier movie. He's a high ranking military officer in the Special Forces, is he really going to talk like one of those types? Let's be real here.

So, Jax saying "Awww, yeah" and "I guess all dem extra arms don't make a difference" didn't sound a bit stereotypical to you? If not, cool, I'm just saying what it sounded like to me. I never said I only met black people in college. However, it was when I was around the most in my life. I'm from a really small town in Canada so I hadn't met many people other than white or Native until I was 17-years old, which was when I had the chance to finally move.
I know both black and white people hlwho talk like that. Its not a stereotypical black thing to say those lines imo.

So dreadlocks and a slight accent is racist?

FFS. Quit being so damn sensitive.
Yeah calling out Cyrax because of his hair (Wtf) and his accent is kinda racist in in itself because Cyrax is a perfectly normal looking and sounding guy.
I hope some of realize what you're implying here....

The dreadlocks were a little silly. Come on...

Talking jive is not exactly what I was referring to either. Every black character is decked out in stereotypes. Maybe not the same ones, but ones that are normally associated with their skin color.

Am I sensitive to it? Yes. In that I can easily spot it. Offended? Not particularly. Doesn't mean it isn't offensive, though.
