SPOILER ALERT:Mortal Kombat X DIGITAL COMIC DISCUSSION

Wow, that tweet from Kittelsen in response to ZombieVito was pretty disappointing. It was like, 'don't focus on the little details, yay mortal kombat characters!'

The fans ARE focusing on the characters Shawn, which is why they have noticed this sequence of events you've awkwardly squeezed them into seems haphazardly slapped together. Actually I've decided not to buy any more of the digital chapters because this Sunday's was awful.

The illustrations were lacklustre (why the hell did D'Vorah have human eyes), the dialogue was cheesy, and the whole thing was basically just a Sonya vs Oni fight scene. MEH.

That's what I've been trying to say. Kittelsen is a good writer, but, after the game, it's clear for me that he is writing without proper contact with the canon story of the game.

About the years, makes more sense being 10, since on the game Kotal mentions NRW, wich happened 25 years ago, not 5. The game was mistaken, IMO (even if we forget the comics, makes no sense within the own game).

But his commentary shows how little contact he has. It's like he is saying exactly what Nethervestige said: in case you find yourself in doubt of something, YAY MORTAL KOMBAT (*that music).

You guys are way too hard on Kittlesten. Sure the dude makes mistakes, but god it could be so much worse. It could just be marketing out the ass with every issue being about Scorpion and Sub-Zero, no cameos from Tasia or Frost. No love for 3d characters like Reiko or Havik.

Kittlesten will forever remain faultless in my eyes, mainly for the scene with Gorbak and Goro. Takes balls to throw something so sentimental into a franchise like this one.

Yeah, I think these little mistakes are to be expected given that it looks like he's mostly been working on his own without input from the MKX team. He clearly has a lot of love for the franchise and I'm glad he's the one doing the comic. It's a real story rather than just a marketing vehicle and I appreciate that.

This. The MKX timeline shit makes my head spin, so I can't fault Shawn for making mistakes from time to time.

I'm on Shawn's side completely. Any time discrepancies come up between MKX and the comic, I inevitably prefer how the comic does it.

But the last issue was pretty darn action-heavy... and it wasn't even good action. Like he said, nothing's perfect.

He's right though. An inconsistency on the dates of these events doesn't take away from the development these characters have seen. You're acting like he got a major piece of lore wrong. This wasn't a mishap because of ignorance, it was just an error.

And MKX barely references the comic to begin with, so you can treat it as non-canon if you like. It's an expansion of the world and characters, like the Star Wars Expanded Universe stuff.

Not to put words in ZombieVito 's mouth, but what I think frustrates him in this situation is that instead of saying "Oh shit, how did that happen? Let's try to get to the bottom of this and get this stuff sorted out ASAP," Kittelsen basically said "don't worry about it." And I can understand being frustrated/disappointed by a response like that.

Shouldn't I worry about it? The last 5-10 pages of this thread were taken up by a discussion of Kotal Kahn, forced on us by the messy timeline which makes his character in the game completely impenetrable. Depending on whether the comic's timeline or the game's timeline is accurate, we're stuck with a completely different scene in the game, which lends itself to completely different readings of the character and completely different readings of what the hell is the situation in Outworld and who should we be rooting for in the Civil War?

I actually think, based on the game, we're supposed to root for Mileena.

Hear me out:

1. Sonya and Raiden in their intros with her both seem to suggest they would've preferred she not be deposed. Sonya outright says "they were wrong to depose you." She doesn't want to be Mileena's friend, but she thinks the coup was unnecessary and immoral.

2. While Kotal Kahn 'respects' the Reiko Accords with Earthrealm, they were presumably made by Mileena before he took over.

3. D'Vorah betrays Mileena ostensibly because she thinks Ko'atal and Reptile are correct, but more likely because the more chaos she sows in Outworld, the more ripe for the plucking the realm will be for her true master. A civil war raging is good for Shinnok.

4. The death of Baraka and betrayal of Mileena is, I think, supposed to make us feel bad for her. It's compounded by the fact that it turns out her only friends after Baraka's death, Rain and Tanya, are actually working against her for their own purposes.

5. Kotal Kahn's argument that keeping Edenia annexed is good for Outworld is... exactly Shao Kahn's position, and what Kitana and all her allies were fighting against in the original timeline. Mileena meanwhile is willing to restore Edenia in return for Tanya's aid, which is a good diplomatic move.

6. Mileena's execution is a pitiable scene. She's utterly defeated and longs for death so she can rejoin her father, the only person who ever really loved her.

7. Immediately after Mileena dies, Kotal Kahn betrays the Earthrealm heroes. We're left with the notion that perhaps we backed the wrong horse.

8. D'Vorah, who is initially presented as an unbiased character expressing support for Ko'atal over Mileena -- making that position look like the reasonable one to the player -- is revealed to be a sadistic monster in the service of Shinnok, who doesn't give a shit about Outworld at all.

This is all further underlined by the way Kitana is portrayed, as enjoying the power and freedom of being a revenant. Throughout the story mode NRS is complicating which one of them is the 'good' sister.

Kotal is right about Edenia though. Outworld is already divided by a civil war. To segregate from Edenia would weaken the realm even further. But Shao Kahn kept domain over Edenia not for protection, he did it for his ego. Kotal Kahn respects sovereignty, as seen in his non canon ending.

Kotal is right from his own perspective, for sure. Not disputing that. But from the perspective of the Edenians? He's maintaining the annexation and occupation of their homeland. It doesn't matter why the Kahn is doing that, if the result is the same.

Watching Erron Black intros, I know I'm being repetitive, but obvious proof that comics and game are written on parallel projects, yet both canon.

- Black treats Cassie as a stranger;
- Black even tries flirting with Jacqui and Sonya (specially Sonya) :laugh:;
- Black shows disgust of the Black Dragon.

There is only one thing that it's absolutely unquestionable: the guy's got the style

Speaking as Johnny Cage fan, this comic has been mega weird. Kittelsen treats him as a legit dramatic character, which is great and awesome and I'm not complaining... but in terms of action stuff, Johnny is a complete and total non-entity. Wth?

List of fights characters have been in so far:

Scorpion: 4 (Hsu Hao, Forrest Fox, Raiden, Sub-Zero)
Kotal Kahn: 4 (Spaniards, Red Dragon/Rain/Goro, Shokan, King Gorbak)
Takeda: 4 (Forrest Fox, Forrest Fox, Raiden, Sub-Zero)
Cassie: 4 (Jacqui, Frost, Red Dragon mooks, Erron Black/Mavado)
Sub-Zero: 3 (Kano, Tekunin, Scorpion)
Kano: 2 (Sub-Zero, Red Dragon/Mavado)
Goro: 2 (Kotal K'Etz, Kotal Kahn)
Sonya: 2 (D'Vorah, Shokan mooks)
Jacqui: 2 (Cassie, Erron Black/Mavado)
Mavado: 2 (Osh-Tekk, Kano/Erron/Cassie/Jacqui)
Forrest Fox: 2 (Takeda, Takeda/Scorpion)
Raiden: 1 (Scorpion/Takeda)
D'Vorah: 1 (Sonya)
Kenshi: 1 (Hsu Hao)
Erron Black: 1 (Cassie/Jacqui)
Reiko: 1 (monsters)
Frost: 1 (Cassie)
Hsu Hao: 1 (Kenshi/Scorpion)
Jarek: 1 (tournament organizers)
Tasia: 1 (tournament organizers)
Kotal K'Etz: 1 (Goro)
Suchin (Kenshi's baby mama): 1 (Red Dragon mooks)
Shaun (Sonya's ginger man): 1 (Oni warlord)
...
Johnny Cage: 0 (Caught Reptile's tongue that one time?)

In fact, not only did Johnny Cage not get a single hit in on any enemies in the last issue (as opposed to Sonya, Kotal Kahn, and motherf---ing Shaun), but his greatest contribution to the issue was RUNNING AWAY FROM THE FIGHTING. I'm sensing a pattern here.

Well, I just rewatched chapter 4 and had a revelation:

Takeda asks why Outworld did not help Earthrealm in the Netherealm war since they were allies. Jin corrects him saying they are not allies but they have a non aggression pact since then.

This is exactly what Kotal Kahn refers to in chapter 6. He made a detente with Earthrealm during the Netherrealm war.

Damn they really did screw up the dates in the game. I'm a big fan of MGS so I guess I can't complain too much about this.

I despise the artist that's doing this chapter.
The other guy made Gorbak look incredible. A regal being of power and compassion.

This current jackass makes him look like a random lord of the Rings goblin. Damn I wish they'd get rid of him.

The real reason Outworld didn't help Earthrealm in the Netherrealm War is its ruler at the time held Earthrealm responsible for her father's death.
