Not to put words in ZombieVito 's mouth, but what I think frustrates him in this situation is that instead of saying "Oh shit, how did that happen? Let's try to get to the bottom of this and get this stuff sorted out ASAP," Kittelsen basically said "don't worry about it." And I can understand being frustrated/disappointed by a response like that.
Shouldn't I worry about it? The last 5-10 pages of this thread were taken up by a discussion of Kotal Kahn, forced on us by the messy timeline which makes his character in the game completely impenetrable. Depending on whether the comic's timeline or the game's timeline is accurate, we're stuck with a completely different scene in the game, which lends itself to completely different readings of the character and completely different readings of what the hell is the situation in Outworld and who should we be rooting for in the Civil War?
I actually think, based on the game, we're supposed to root for Mileena.
Hear me out:
1. Sonya and Raiden in their intros with her both seem to suggest they would've preferred she not be deposed. Sonya outright says "they were wrong to depose you." She doesn't want to be Mileena's
friend, but she thinks the coup was unnecessary and immoral.
2. While Kotal Kahn 'respects' the Reiko Accords with Earthrealm, they were presumably
made by Mileena before he took over.
3. D'Vorah betrays Mileena ostensibly because she thinks Ko'atal and Reptile are correct, but more likely because the more chaos she sows in Outworld, the more ripe for the plucking the realm will be for her true master. A civil war raging is good for Shinnok.
4. The death of Baraka and betrayal of Mileena is, I think, supposed to make us feel bad for her. It's compounded by the fact that it turns out her only friends after Baraka's death, Rain and Tanya, are actually working against her for their own purposes.
5. Kotal Kahn's argument that keeping Edenia annexed is good for Outworld is... exactly Shao Kahn's position, and what Kitana and all her allies were fighting against in the original timeline. Mileena meanwhile is willing to restore Edenia in return for Tanya's aid, which is a good diplomatic move.
6. Mileena's execution is a pitiable scene. She's utterly defeated and longs for death so she can rejoin her father, the only person who ever really loved her.
7. Immediately after Mileena dies, Kotal Kahn betrays the Earthrealm heroes. We're left with the notion that perhaps we backed the wrong horse.
8. D'Vorah, who is initially presented as an unbiased character expressing support for Ko'atal over Mileena -- making that position look like the reasonable one to the player -- is revealed to be a sadistic monster in the service of Shinnok, who doesn't give a shit about Outworld at all.
This is all further underlined by the way Kitana is portrayed, as enjoying the power and freedom of being a revenant. Throughout the story mode NRS is complicating which one of them is the 'good' sister.
