Soul Calibur IV

Master Chief was a guest in DoA4. That's probably what you were thinking of Tim. No, I don't want console specific characters this time. Look at who they had to put in SCII, Spawn? The Xbox has absolutely NO good action-platformer, RPG, or anything-that-isn't-a-shooter mascots. In fact, Halo is just about the only first party or Xbox exclusive that's stayed that way and is in any way recognizable. Unless you want to see a Viva Pinata battling Nightmare.

Also, Critical Finishers. I forgot mention that in my review. I havn't quite seen all of them, but there are a few that tickle my fancy. Seung Mi-na's is pretty kick ass. Zasalamel is ok. Siegfried is kickass too but Nightmare's is fairly lackluster. Voldo's is good. It's difficult to judge whether or not the quality is mostly good or not since I've only seen a handful of them. But as it was said it's EXTREMELY hard to get a Critical Finish unless you specifically engineer yourself towards them. And not every character is good at that. Even if you buff them in CaS.

Im on level 45-46 in the tower of lost souls. I have a 3 on one advantage and couldnt beat the girl on the first two tries. She blocks everything, and her hits are very damaging. wow!

Allow me to explain a couple tricks for that level. I'm sure it will save everyone a lot of time. But first, 7th you don't have your gamercard embedded in your profile. Unless you have a PS3 you should tell us your gamertag so we can play! So far the only person onlien I've seen is TRZA and he doesn't have XBL Gold!

But on with the tips. There are 3 ways to utterly destroy those 3. They are as follows:

Here's a controls reference:

7 8 9
4 5 6
1 2 3

Option 1. Use character with Nightmare's soul and rotate between his many attack throws. Use his crouching 3+B, crouching throws, and 2+A+B against grounded opponents to deal quick damage. These characters cannot be thrown as they have Auto Grapple Break S but Attack Throws still count for full damage.

Option 2. Make a CaS with Astaroth's soul and buff him out as much as possible. Make certain he has HP Drain A as a skill and equip him with Soul Edge. This is all you need. Now simply spam his 1+A (hold), A and 1+A (hold), B attacks alternating to confuse the computer. The Taki CaS on floor 45 should fall to this tactic. You need to use Attack Throws against the jokers on floor 46. Astaroth has a VERY damaging Attack Throw which is performed by inputting 2, 1, 4, A. Look on his moves list if you don't understand my controls. Just spam this and they will fall. This is how I defeated this floor.

Option 3. Soul Crush and Critical Finish the shit out of 'em. Create a CaS with Yun-Seung's soul and make sure he has Soul Guage Damage A and Soul Guage Vamp as skills (he will need to be level 8). Now spam his 6, Y, Y attack until their soul guage shatters. You should win with time to spare.

Thanks for the tips, oh and my Gamertag is ...... The 7th Number. :-D But my gold live runs out on the 12th. Plus i hate online, everyone ive played does cheap moves over and over.

Yea well I'm not like that. We need to play soon if your gold runs out that soon! Like I said in my review, try playing non-ranked matches where people aren't as concerned about winning and don't spam as much.

I'm on occasionally but I can't get online right now b/c I just moved into my new apartment and don't have my internet set up yet. I'll be on later this week for certain, any particular time I should look for you? I'm on East Coast USA.

After playing the game and feeling like my eyeballs were peeling off my face... I agree with everything this video mentions above (except the MK bit of course since I believe you can't dis a game until you've played it).

And while glaring or whatever that effect is makes the models nice, pretty etc, etc, it hurts the eyes to look at the screen. Too much white highlighting. I miss SC2. I now appricate it a lot more even if it was insanely broken. And having Star Wars characters in it just felt so out of place since the game is medievil and Star Wars isn't. In fact I felt "God, lets just get this over with already" evey time I saw their stage come up or them com up.

SC4 disappoints me.

On the other hand, it has put me in good spirits forseveral other games coming up later this year.

Well dissapointing or not it's still hella fun. Btw, check out my gamerscore for SCIV...1000/1000 baby! My first 1000 gamerscore game! Happy happy happy. If anybody ever wants to have a match just PM me and I'll jump.

I'm not too crazy honestly about SC4, the apprentice is broken...Yoda sucks and needs to be tweaked a bit so you can throw him and hit him with certain hits and most of the endings flat out blow IMO.

I think it's definitely better then SC3, but no where near as good as SC and SC2

My opinion.

Later

Right, because Yoda and the Apprentice are ALL that matter. Not the, you know, REAL characters. The ones that were tweaked and improved drastically? Yoshimitsu? Siegfried? You know? Just because Yoda sucks doesn't mean everybody does.

I'll give you that one about the endings though. Most of them do flat out blow. SC3's were better.

Yoshimitsu is my favorite, followed closely by Taki. I always gravitate toward ninja characters anyway.

When you guys say a character is "broken," you need to specify whether the character is unplayable or cheesy. In any case, The Apprentice is neither. He's not easy to master, but he's useful. I expected him to be a lot more agile and have greater range, but he's still a fun character to play. At the same time, he's not terribly cheap, and most of his most powerful moves and combos are easy to predict or counter.

Broken only means one thing in a fighting game. Overpowered to the point of being...well, broken. Yoda is broken. He has a ridiculous unfair advantage in that he cannot be thrown, a good third of many character's moves and combos go right over his head, and he has powerful moves to boot. Broken doesn't mean cheesy nor unplayable. It always mean overpowered. I reject Yoda. Vader is fine, the apprentice is fine, but Yoda should never have been made.

Cheesy is a term used to describe characters that possess spammable and/or overpowered attacks.

Perhaps I'm thinking of low-tier characters. There are characters I would consider "broken" in this sense because there is some inherent trait that keeps them from being competitively played. Mewtwo from SSBM is an example of a broken character.

I think you need to rethink that... Fun is different for everyone. My defination of fun is where you can play a game comfortably, at a decent challenge rating without having to deal with any trainers designed to teach you the game annoying you... SC4 fails on comfortably as previously stated, it felt my my eyes were metling.

And it felt drawn out. Like it wanted me to be a drone, SC3 was bad enough with that. Sc4 can go hang itself. Now, SC2, that was FUN. Fun because you didn't need to fiddle around with any distracting modes to get from A to B. Its like saying MK:Arm was fun, when it wasn't as we all know for the same dam reasons.

If they could have replicated the SC2 effect SC4 would have been great but:
-the graphics are so highly detailed their a mess to the eyes and are ugly.
-They should learn that the right contrast is your friend. The difference between dark and light shouldn't be so dam great.
-The highlighting is so bright it hurts my eyes.
-Whenever they use special effects they burn too because the same forumla for highlights seems to have been repeated for the effects.
-Once again like SC3 the new characters are just reharshes of old ones (Tiara was the best thing SC3 ever did otherwise I'd played SC3 a lot less).
-The story is getting old and needs a revamp to make it progress to be more then just a thousand reasons why 40+ people are after two swords. Sure, keep them the centre of attraction, but move the story on from what it is. Its become a story anyone can write in their sleep.
-Lastly, button mashing never felt so dam boring. Even SC3, button mashing was fustrating (I used to do this for kicks when I grew tired of normal tactics), but now it just seems so easy to pull off. I think though its become a feature of the series, its about time they made it less easier to just randomly hit buttons and hope for the best. One of the reason why I occusionally resort to this is out of laziness, a player shouldn't be allowed to be lazy with attacks unless the setting is put on "easy" mode.

I had enough of the game within 15 matches of playing it. I played SC2 for days... SC3 only because I comitteed myself to complete the "Cronicles of the swords..." or whatever its called. I don't care how populaur a game is or a series is... Just with MK there is no excuse for bad games, I'd buy SC4 if I have a console for the same reason I buy MK games because I like the series and have grown to like the characters. But like many series, they've exhausted the title to the point of not knowing what to do with it.

Edit:

Oh and who gave Tiara a voice actor who sounds so 8 year oldish...

She should sound playful, not preschool

Edit:

A lot fo the Voice Actors sound so lame. What happened to them all? Ivy's gone from posh and ready, to boring and half-ased. And don't let me get started on some of the others. It feels like someone cracked out the whips and forced the Voice Acting upon the voice actors, SC2 voices sounded so relaxed and natural.

Wow that's a lot of hate. I'm almost certain you can choose to have the Japanese voices if you hate the english ones so much. If this game "hurts your eyes" then I think your TV needs readjustment (or maybe your EYES need readjustment). I don't even understand where you're coming from with that it's not a complaint I've ever heard...on like, any game ever.

But I'd like to explore this "SC2 feel" a bit more. What was so different about SC2? Ok, they had soul charge (which I never used anyway) but what else made it so different? The Tower is basically the same as Weapon Master mode which still made you jump through hoops to unlock things. You say SC3/4 want you to be a drone? I don't understand what you mean. SC2 doesn't just had you shit on a silver platter, it forces you to unlock things too. Could you elaborate and get an eye exam and get back to me?
