It will most likely be android based. The Ouya killer?

Sources have approached Game Informer with an interesting bit of news from one of the world's largest retailers. Amazon is developing an Android based console for release by the end of this year, most likely by Black Friday.

According to those we spoke with who have knowledge of the in-development hardware, Amazon will be leveraging the titles already available on its platform. Each day, the company offers one productivity or game app for free and stocks a healthy library for its own devices, like the Kindle Fire. The console will also have its own, dedicated controller.

Their only advantage over Ouya is that they have a better developer community already on their fork of Android. They'll also have a far better chance of people buying content because of the trusted brand.

That said Android still needs some killer games to sell consoles like this and Ouya. Games sell consoles, not their low prices.

Plus the performance issues of Android not running natively but via Dalvik which adds to performance overhead problems compared to the fully native iOS development environment.

a android only system will fail. as much as i hate cod that franchise alone would simply bury anything android puts out on this thing

what amazon needs to do is be a real system and get some big names to sign on to working with

I still don't understand how all these app companies have the need to make themselves known in the gaming world. It will just take longer to release games because developers will have to code for these lesser consoles.

Everything you just said makes no sense at all.

Wow I can buy an Amazon console off of Amazon? I wonder if you buy the console off of Amazon you get a discount. I'm guessing its the Amazon Fox

The Ouya was quite successful with its Kickstarter campaign, but much of the hype died since then, especially after their failure to deliver the goods to their backers on time.

It's unlikely that Amazon will directly compete with the likes of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. However, they could find a niche audience in indie games, especially if they have a low barriers to entry for the devs.
