Roster Speculation

Wasn't their a interview on one of the games sites where this was also asked? I want to say he replied that their is no limit, it is whatever they can finish before production date. He also talked about making as many new characters as returning old, but this was also a couple months after the first gameplay was shown so it could have of been new character hype.

It was an interview with Shaun Himmerick, and yes, you are correct.
Shaun said that they were going to try to fit in as many characters onto the main roster, as possible, which is why I don't think that 24 is a concrete final number.

My guess is 26 - 28 on the main roster, and the remaining ones that didn't make on the main roster being DLC (which is the way it should be, IMO).

24 seems kind of low for a game of this caliber. MvC3 had 39 characters. SF4 had 44. Maybe that's just Japanese developers, but they make MK's current roster(That we are estimating.) pale in comparison. Its on par with Soul Calibur's roster I guess.

24 for these types of fighting games seem to work, some of the older had a lot less. Of course DLC allows it to build up roster after a complete game. MvsC3 was a 3 team game, you get a lot of different characters to make the teams and game less of the same over and over. It also has so many for fan service, that was one of the big things talked about for 3 was giving fans at least 1 character they wanted. As for SF4 isn't their like 4 different games now, they did the dlc route by just making a new game and adding new characters. The main core of the game itself is already complete, so that saves them a lot of time. Of course they tweaked and added to the overall experience of the games also.

MK9 only had 27. Not that much of a difference. And the people that assume 24 usually don't count Goro, which would be 25 at launch.

It's interesting that Ed boon will mention and hint at every MK character...but he won't mention LUI ,Sonya or Johnny cage at all...

"I AM the flashing lights and special effects."

He did reply to a tweet about Sonya recently. Someone asked him if Sonya was coming back and he said there was a chance.

I mean, if we go by Boon's word of "30 something" characters, just average it out and say 30 and go 50/50 new and old.

We would have 7 more returning characters and 11 more new characters (Goro not included)

I can live with that as long as a handful of the 7 returning are post MK3 characters.

taking the 24 slots into account as well as the whole more new characters than ever, the remaining ones will be: Mileena, Liu Kang, Ermac OR Smoke and J. Cage (I got a feeling sonya will make a cameo and die in story mode somehow). which brings to mind what Adam from NRS said about 'a lot of surprises' when it comes to the choices of the roster which is complete BS. they just brought back all the most iconic characters back and for yet another game, screw Rain fans, screw fans of 3D era chars that have potential such as Fujin, Havik, Tanya, Reiko and maybe Kenshi, and also screw fans of Skarlet who was new and had tons of potential. always the same characters in each game, always the 'more obscure' ones with potential out because fanboys would be like OMG WERE IZ MAH KUNG LAOH!!!! as if those characters didn't get their chance in like a freaking billion games already. I love this franchise since I was just a kid, I will buy it and play the crap out of it just as I did with all MK games but their direction is heavily flawed imho. instead of bringing the same ones AGAIN they could finally give a chance to chars that weren't given the chance but have potential and instead of the niece of the cousin of the aunt of kung lao's grandpa, they could have just come up with new characters in earthrealm to defend it, outworld and so on. also, not a fan of shitty names such as erron black, forrest fox or generic ones such as takeda. I sincerely hope the next game will be the chance of Rain, Fujin, Skarlet and such chars to shine and grow because as it is atm, we'll get all the typical ones and the DLC will probably be characters that are classic and will sell crazy such as sektor, smoke, baraka etc. I also am certain that Tremor is one of the new chars group due to that petition thing and high demand.

I think people are focusing on the unfinished character select screen a bit too much. Boon has said on several occasions that the character select is not final and that it will be "30 something" characters.

Hmm, i still think Fujin might be in and he might even be the next reveal.

As do I, but I'm not expecting it.
At the most I think they show the same roster tiles, but with Reptile, Kitana, Kung Lao and the new character added.
Well, I think it's possible. I mean, they gotta be done with selecting the number of people on the roster by now, right? Game is less than two months away from going gold unless it gets delayed, and they're probably mostly doing testing and balancing at the moment, along with fine-tuning animations and such.

ok I think the magic number is 32.

I had a vision of the final select screen.
consisting of 18 klassics and 14 new mix with post mk3.

1. Scorpion
2. Sub-zero
3. Raiden
4. Kano
5. Kitana
6. Johny Cage
7. Reptile
8. Mileena
9. Kung Lao
10.Ermac
11.Noob saibot.
12.Cyrax
13.Smoke
14.Sektor
15.Shang tsung
16.Jade
17..Liu Kang
18.Goro
19.Quan chi
20.kenshi
21.Reiko
22.Fujin
23.Tanya
24.Cassie Cage
25.Kotal Khan
26.D'vorah
27.Ferra-torr
28.Takeda
29.Forrest Fox
30.Erron Black
31.Skarlet
32.Jaqui

That is way too many returning characters. I think total, including post Mk3 characters, half the roster will be return characters.

It depends on what build they decide to show us.
They could have a build of the game with 28 slots or they could have an earlier build of the game with 24 slots.
It doesn't matter how far along in the process they are, they could show us an older build of the game.
Demos that come out for games are usually older builds.
That's my point.

so if u feel the final number will be 30, do u really expect 11 brand new characters?
that would be nice considering how great the ones we already have. but I doubt it, I feel no more than 5 post mk3.

Considering that Boon has said "Most new characters ever in a MK game" Um...yeah...I do.
