Roster Speculation

While I can understand that, a fair amount of MK4 on characters are just clones of other charaters or just so underdeveloped they just don't matter.

As someone whose only played MK1-3 and MK9, I must say that going through all the characters, the only ones that sound interesting are Havik, Shinnok, Reiko, and Bo Rai Cho.

And the only reason Reiko should be in is because it allows us to play Shao Khan while keeping Shao Khan a boss.

Yeah, I think one reason I tend to have faith in the 3D era cast is because I grew up with the likes of MKDA-A. And while I'm not asking for the clone characters to come back, I think the likes of Havik, Reiko and Bo' Rai Cho definitely deserve another shot. Havik and Reiko in particular probably have SOME involvement in the game's plot considering what's going on in the comics.
NetherRealm War-wise it wouldn't have been out of place to polish up Ashrah or Sareena. Then again everyone has their preferences.

Critical-Limit I never meant that we should totally leave out the Trilogy cast, I just feel that not all of them are completely necessary. Do we really need Kano and Jax, considering we already got a taste in MK9. I know they'll play well but leaving out Fujin (again) and giving a slot to those two seems a bit much.

I guess w/e floats your boat lol. I personally find it out of place in MK.

About as out of place as I'd find if they put a magical school girl as a playable character in MKX

Alma Wade, Mesme, there are some pretty serious magical school girls that would make an awesome cameo character.

I actually want to see that now that you've opened the door.

We... we cannot be friends :)

ArcaneEsper I know you didn't say they shouldn't, sorry if you thought I was assuming things about you. I was just suggesting the reason I think NRS took those actions.

Kano and Jax? Maybe they also thought eh, these weren't that popular in MK9, but another reason I think the roster is safe. is they prioritized the story more this time.

It seems every character so far will prove as some sort of tool in the story, and will actually contribute. Unlike mk9 where we had a good amount of "grunt" characters that didn't really move the story along.

Why are some people saying Tanya is a clone? I don't play her for a few years, but I clearly remember her having at least 3 unique moves of her own. She was at best a Cammy heavily inspired character. Would people say Kano is a Blanka's clone as well?

There are a lot of new kids that have jumped into the FGC and completely changing what being a clone means.

Apparently if you only have 1-2 similar things you're automatically a clone these days. I wouldn't waste my time debating it honestly. People are also a lot more close minded these days than they use to be.

Nah man, it's okay. I didn't get offended, just thought I should clear my stance.

But yeah, the story is definitely getting boosted focus this time around, lets hope they can pull it off. I'll try to remain optimistic about the game, but since the roster will probably rely on DLC for the excitement factor I might end up waiting for a "Komplete Edition" since I can't buy any DLC.

There's proof that Liu Kang is in, so those saying he's not is either trolling, as CL says above, or in denial. There's no need to pay them any attention, because they are simply being wrong.

With Liu Kang & Jax confirmed the shown roster is about full. Are things looking bleak for other characters? Or is the possibility that the roster is bigger than previously anticipated becoming more and more likely?

With the confirmed characters we now have, everything depends on a) whether Goro will be on the default roster (he's DLC) and b) whether that random character select/question mark thing is going to be there in the launch build. If all DLC characters go there in a fold-out list (like in MK9) then Goro's spot could go to someone else.

But yeah, if Goro is staying on the main roster regardless of whether you own him then I guess we're full now.

I suspect the ? might be for the unlockable character.
So the roster either needs to expand down or scroll sideways to add more kharacters.
It's possible but MK has always had all selectable kharacters visible I think. So it's unlikely at best.

I fear for Baraka, Fujin, Shang Tsung, Reiko, Havik, Hotaru & Frost.

In MK9, DLC characters were added on a fold-out menu at the bottom of the roster, so assuming the same is true in MKX then NRS can add any future DLC characters to it without having to add more slots to the roster. IIRC, the DLC characters used Cyber Sub-Zero's roster slot, but I can't remember for sure.

Realistically, we're probably not getting any more characters at this point, as it seems quite late in the day to show an expanded roster, and with the variation system making character development more complex I'd be surprised if we saw 30+ characters in MKX. That's a lot of work and balancing.

I think we have to be honest and say that if we want as yet unrevealed characters, they're going to have to be in post-Kombat Pack DLC, if that ever happens. I'm hoping (unrealistically, I know) for Fujin being ninja-revealed at the last minute as an unlockable in story mode, but I know it's not going to happen.

There was some talk of Baraka, but he's probably an NPC.

I believe this is how they'll include DLC on the select screen. It's the only way to keep everything on one screen (otherwise you'd have a select screen that scrolls) and avoid getting in the way of the characters (which a third row would do). The random select slot is not final, according to Shaun, and I don't believe there will be a 26th character at launch, so I think random select turns into the DLC slot, which when selected, opens up a column (a column is the only way to keep everything symmetrical and not get in the way of the characters).

Then what about Goro's spot? He's DLC.
He might be in the DLC slot, but the way they've oddly positioned him makes me think he'll be included with the rest of the launch roster. Call it a hunch.

If Goro is in with the DLC, then my next guess would be two DLC slots, one for each player, like in MK9. So no 26th character in either case; I just don't believe in that now. The DLC slots would probably be on either side of the screen in that case.

With the sparse room available (the way things look now) wouldn't it be strange to reserve 2 slots for DLC?

The fact that Goro wasn't shown last stream does suggest his place isn't set definitely, so I'd be surprised if he shows up in the main roster to mock everyone who didn't pre-order and just act as a link to the store.

Space isn't sparse. They can easily either

1) shrink the boxes (they did it before to add slots 25 and 26 - they can do it again), or

2) get rid of the space between boxes by smashing them together, like how the fake Tanya/Shinnok leak looked:

Either option would create space for several more boxes. In fact, they might do that for DLC. They might do it like in Injustice, where there was no DLC slot and they just added onto the original select screen.

But my point is, if they wanted more characters, they'd put them in. Space is not an issue.

goro was on the select screen last stream.
