People's extreme love and passion towards characters

As you can see by the naming conventions on this site, people incorporate their favorite characters and media as apart of their personal identity. Which is why an inclusion or lack thereof can be taken personally.

For me, I initially was excited to see Ermac in UMK3 because i wanted to see a red ninja, but i was sold in the end by his telekinetic slam move, which just looked so cool. I also like secret, obscure things so i latched on. I nevwr really had a favorite before that, but i often played as reptile, sektor, or smoke. In mk1 i played scorpion.

I know that if we had the same cast now, without Ermac, I'd have pretty lukewarm feelings about MKX, especially sense my other favorites, Rain, Noob, Chameleon, didnt make the cut. I am the kind of player who pretty much picks one character to master and sticks with it almost everytime. That character is ermac in mortal kombat. So mortal kombat is "Ermac game" as far as i am concerned, and with out its star it gets horribly undermined.

As a thought exercise without Ermac, Id probably play as Dvorrah, Erron Black, or Kenshi. But without Ermac its not jearly as exciting. I also guess it says a lot that almost all of the characters id pick otherwise are brand new. I dont like this roster as muchas the last game, as much as i appreciate the new blood.

Is this regarding that "Fujin Kampaign" thread? It could be as simple as wanting a favorite character in this game or as complex as feeling a sense of accomplishment when you work hard enough to get something to actually happen (like petitioning for a character).

I love Kitana because I love her story, gameplay, and appearance. I'm guilty of not wanting to buy the game because I thought she wouldn't be in it so I guess she's the reason I'm buying MKX (and ultimately a PS4). I just felt like this game wouldn't mean much to me if Kitana was not in it. Maybe that's how people feel about Fujin and, for a time, Tanya.

I'm a bigger fan of MK as a series than I am about any of my favorite characters. I would have been a little miffed if Mileena and Kenshi missed the boat in MKX, but in the end I'd still buy it and I'm sure I'd still love it. I'd just have to find someone new to like, and characters like Kano and Erron would be primary candidates.

Wretchedest I understand we take these characters as an identity, but will the exclusion of them, or someone talking ill of them harm your actual self? If it does, I would question's someone's mental state.

Goddess, No this has been on my mind because of the countless arguments over characters which has been a theme of the lead up to MKX's release. The Fujin thread was kinda the last straw tbh.

So pretty much what I'm understanding so far is that people allow their favourite character to personify the game for them. To me, I cannot agree with that, but so be it.

Lord Greyjoy, I feel you. It's fiction and it's easy to have new favourites This is what I mean by getting so personally invested in a character that doesn't even exist in the world around you.

(And I´m not a nerd, )

News flash: yes you are. We're all nerds. However, being a nerd doesn't mean you live in your parents basement with a Afro, eating Cheetos all day. It just means you're into stuff that's considered "uncool". Actually, being a nerd is considered cool nowadays. You can thank hipsters for that one :(

Honestly, this is no different from people who are passionate about their favorite sports team. I have friends and family members who won't let you in their house if you have on the rival team's jersey. Both are fanatical about their hobby. However, one is considered cool while the other isn't.

Well, If you talk about that I can agree... but I was talking about the classic nerd concept...

Again, I find people of the latter part of your post to be stupid as well. I'm a diehard Arsenal FC fan, but I won't get mad if one of my friends supports another team. I guess this extends into any sort of extreme die hard fandom.

The reason I'm so passionate about who should be on the roster is due to consistency. Mostly, due to the quote on quote "dead characters never stay dead." I feel that is a lame excuse for including certain characters when they could've just allowed the characters to live through MK9 instead. I feel that they could've let the characters sit out for one game and they could've let characters like Fuujin and other non-mk9 characters take the spotlight for one game. Hopefully, they are much more consistent with MK11.

This is how I feel about soccer.

And by the way, soccer fans are synonymous with rioting, as the above video will show.

I don't think anyone is stupid for wanting their favorites to be in a game they feel so passionately about. In the end, it is just a game and it isn't the entire world (to me, at least), but gaming is a big part of some people's lives, and so is this game. Maybe that's why it means so much for people to want their favorite character in it. It's the newest MK on the newest consoles that people dished out $400+ for so MK must mean something to some people. I just feel like calling mega fans stupid is taking things out of hand. Let people petition, let people make threats of not buying the game, let them want what they want. If they don't get what they desire then they'll just have to live with it. That's life, basically.

But the argument I'm making is that the game is bigger than every character in it. Without the game, we won't get these characters that people love. So what gives the people the right to make threats like that? The argument can extend to sports, movies, etc. Is it okay to become angry at people just for supporting a different team? You'd watch a movie because the movie interests you at first, not just a character.

Don't get me wrong Goddess, I get where you're coming from.

Well then I guess that's just psychological. Maybe it's just people being selfish.

I guess I can compare it to the holidays. Like, when you open a Christmas present and you end up receiving lame argyle socks instead of that awesome toy you've been wanting all year. You get a present on a Christmas (the new MK game with all these characters), but it's just not the present (character) you wanted. Does that make sense at all?

Yellow Ledbetter, I feel the same way towards characters, but would you let that impact you to the point where you'd get up in arms about their exclusion or if someone talks ill of them?

If a coherent story reason appears that would make my favorites be out in a game, I would be fine, because it would surely have some impact within the story. Even if it didn't, MK has a lot of diversity, i could adapt myself for the same reasons I said.

About talking ill of them, depending on the focus of the comment. If someone says "I dislike Scorpion", "I think he is boring", etc., well, that's the person's opinion, it's like a music or a band, it's not because it touched you that will touch me. But when things comes to the reasons to like a character (bad development, bland, no creativity, lack of backstory, etc.), usually I explain arguments of why the character isn't like that, because sometimes looking the creation from another perspective can give more richness to the interpretation (it has happened to me, with characters like Johnny Cage). If the person doesn't agree, well, tastes, I respect and continue my life.

But I now understand the root of your question. No, I wouldn't waste my time trolling or spamming others because I think I can direct the franchise and turn other's tastes into s**t just because I think I can. As Temptress said, this is not being passionate.

It does and it doesn't. Reason being is that presents are generic, MK is specific. Your analogy would make complete sense if you wanted a completely different video game altogether but got MK instead. MK is a solid product that cannot be changed.

Exactly, I agree wholeheartedly here. I'm just trying to wrap my mind around WHY people would get offended, as opposed to taking the route you and I would take which is acknowledging their opinion.

That's your opinion. Choosing not to pay for something that doesn't suit your needs is the first rule of consumerism. If I know I'm not going to enjoy the game without a certain character, why spend money on it?

Taj Gill I don't see why it bothering you so much? Maybe if NRS didn't use the characters so much as their marketing strategy, we probably wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place. If anyone is to blame it's their marketing team.

im personally not buying this game unless they announce that
Sonya - Cassie - johnny- jax- Jaquie - liu kang - kung jin -
ferra torr - dvorah - tanya - kotal kahn - takashi and kenshi have been removed and replaced with actual good interesting characters such as cyber ninjas, new female ninjas, cyber female ninjas, new unique race characters like tarkatans, just anything that isnt boring and uninspired

But the game itself is what enables you to like a certain character. Put it this way, what attracted to you to MK for the first time? Was it the gameplay, or was it a mere picture of a character you had no idea about? I'd imagine it be the former.

This post also goes out to rocky and Dwallz. Quite frankly, your posts make you both sound like you're entitled to have a certain character in the game which is definitely not the case. Another theme I'm seeing here is false entitlement. And quite frankly, spoilt people.
