People's extreme love and passion towards characters

First of all, if this post offends you by any means, my apologies in advance, I just want to understand something that I can't seem to wrap my head around. Also, this isn't a sarcastic post, and I'm not trying to be demeaning either. Also, I'm posting this in the MKX forum because this theme has been highly emphasized throughout the lead up to release.

If you frequent these forums, you may see posts of mine in regards to people's love and passion towards characters. In MKX, of course not everyone's favourite is going to be in, and to me, that should be accepted due to the fact that overall we love this game enough to post about it on a forum.

What I want to understand is how imaginary, fictional characters that don't even exist in reality can ignite so much passion and love towards them, to the point where petitions are made, social media protests are made, and threats of not buying a product due to the exclusion of a character?

Does it have to do with loneliness? Does it have to do with having nothing better to do? Personally, I believe when people commit actions like the ones I said above, it just enforces the "nerd" stereotype, where the people doing this and feeling this way, are lonely, and still live in their Mother's basement so to speak. So if any reasoning can be said that doesn't conform to that stereotype, I'd really love to hear that.

So yeah, if anyone more enlightened than me would like to chime in, please do.

is tanya black? i've always considered her like... idk, jungle tribal... a mixture of some aboriginal tribe and something else.

She seems/seemed black to me.
I've always felt an uneasy overabuse of love towards the black females of all video games.
I assume it's cause I just like black girls. Lol.
I'm already feeling the same type of feelings for Jacqui in a way. But Tanya is sort of holding that off.

Would you say the same towards someone getting emotionally attached to a character in a movie or a book? Then getting pissed when that character isn't in the follow up or how about crying if that character gets killed off at the end. It's the same thing.

Thanks for derailing the thread guys

Yeah I would say the same, and you make good points, but you'd get over it literally an hour or so after wouldn't you? I'd find it equally stupid if someone made a petition to included a dead character in a sequel of a book or movie because people didn't like the death of a character.

I'll rephrase: Tanya isn't African-American, Latina, Native American, Egyptian or Arabic. She is an Edenian with heavily tanned skin.

But... there's no sun in outworld (or at least it's always cloudy) and they don't have the technology to build solariums lol.

She may not be african or afroamerican but she's still black.

Thank you theincubuslord. Please guys, this topic is bugging me and I'd like an answer lol.

I have too many stuff going on in my life to worry about these kind of things but I guess some people is more passional than me or you.

I think it's ok, I'm all about expressing what you think as long as you don't phuck with other people.

Could we NOT derail this thread with another discussion about Tanya's skin colour?
She does look like a cross between Grace Jones and an hermaphrodite, though. ;)

I don't really have anything to add to the topic, though. I don't know why anyone would ever get aggressive over such a thing, or refuse to buy a fighting game based purely on the exclusion of a single character they're partial to. Hopefully you get some interesting replies.

Yeah, I mean that's where I stand as well, which brings me automatically to the "nerd" stereotype, like don't you have anything better to do?

mandead, I ran out of thanks, so here's a thank you for your post, because I'd also imagine it is hard to understand.

For me, characters deal with emotions.

They are created by people, just like you and me.

And no matter what inspiration they took to creat them, with a 20 year franchise, lots of traits are truly emotions.

So, characters are mirrors of what we are. Sometimes I love some with similar traits, other with extreme opposite, others because of the way they deal with life, others with the way they should deal.

I feel no difference between a game, a book, a movie. It's all emotions. Characters are nothing more than representations of real life, sometimes with fantasy, but it doesn't matter, they always represent human traits.

Picking some of my favorites from MK. Scorpion is a man, with mistakes, crimes, sins. But he dies without justice, but goes to a place where he would pay for his doings. But he is used, becomes a shadow of what he was, because he lost his beloved ones in a brutal death, slaughtered for nothing. So he seeks vengeance, against the wrong person because of a lie, and the right person in the face of truth. But he seeks vengeance seeking peace, seeking redemption. Now more than ever. Isn't that human?

What about Sub-Zero? One is a cruel man, commited a crime, but paid with his life for something he didn't do. Revenge, but no justice. Comes back as pure evil. And what about his brother? A lover of freedom, leaves everything he recognizes as life for it and for the sake of his brother. A cold hearted man, but still has a heart. A legendary warrior, a seeker of his origin. Isn't that human?

And Raiden? A god who has the duty to protect the whole world. But he just can't do it at all, because he is alone. Those who gave him this duty, they just don't help him at all. So what does he do? He makes promises he can't keep, he talks to himself, he makes vows that he wants to fulfill, but he just can't. Because he is somehow human too. He fails, he tries again, he fails again, he loses those he trust, he is betrayed, he goes rogue, he finds his end. That's humanity itself.

I could be talking about other characters, and from other franchises, but I think I was clear on my point. Characters are a little bit of us. While I love a good gameplay, a good match, spending some time just for fun, I'm a story guy, I can't help falling in love with all those characters so close to everybody.

I think it´s a matter of preferences and that´s it...
I adore Kitana because I feel like doing it.... I cannot give another proper explanation
(And I´m not a nerd, I have friends with I spent many time out, I´m even a designer with work, I´m even a teacher... So... I don´t think it has relationship with that... It´s just I adore her and that´s it)

Yellow Ledbetter, I feel the same way towards characters, but would you let that impact you to the point where you'd get up in arms about their exclusion or if someone talks ill of them?

I don't think that has anything to do with being passionate. I'd consider that being a spoiled brat who thinks they're entitled to everything.
