Sony to 'show off pre-release hardware ahead of an expected 2014 launch'

A Sony press conference scheduled for February 25th could be the launch platform for PS4, one online report has claimed.

Expert Reviews claims to have word that Sony will use the Destination PlayStation event “to formally unveil its next-generation PlayStation 4 console for the first time, showing off pre-release hardware ahead of an expected 2014 launch”.

It further claims that the early reveal is intended to dampen enthusiasm for the Xbox 720, which it believes Microsoft WILL launch by the end of 2013.

You can expect plenty more stories along these lines as 2013 progresses.

Microsoft last week revealed a countdown to E3 in June, suggesting that it has pegged the LA showcase for its Next Xbox reveal.

I'm not picking up a new console anytime soon, since I don't feel it's needed.

I'll probably grab a Xbox 720, for RE7 or something of the sort eventually though.

No thanks! I'm getting the Wii U, especially if Sony follows through with implementing a certain patent that was recently published!

Might get the 720, might not. Depends on whether or not they try and lock used games without a serious price drop.

Don't care for the PS4. I got a modern gaming system for Halo, so naturally, sony products don't hold much allure for me.

Probably will pick up the new Xbox on release date.

Just for the simple fact that I've always been late on getting one. And if a PS4 isn't coming out til 2014, then I may pick it up to.

I'm not gonna be late to the part this time, motherfvcker

If PS4 is going through with the inability to play used games on the console, I may just get one of these instead :) :

F*** next-gen consoles.
If this shit is as awesome as it looks, then I just may get this.

Only reason I'd get a console is for MK10.
Other than that, I see myself getting my games for cheaper (Steam always has a shitload of sales), with better graphics, on a better platform. :proud:

Meh, from personal experience fools buy consoles within a tleast a year of launch. Fools and those who intend to show off their new toys.

I used my PS3 to play mostly PS2 games for a while at launch over the PS3 games I had. Same applies for my PS2 with PS1 games.

My Xbox 360 at launch got traded and rarely played.

I say this but the temptation to buy one close to launch will probably be too great. So I can scoff, gloat and lie to myself that I enjoy what ive just forked out however much for a console, another pad and two vaguely interesting launch titles.

I can't say if PS4 will launch this year or not but from what I understand "Expert Reviews" is absolutely clueless and merely created this rumor from scratch. They incorrectly identified the event as being for press when it is actually for retailers, not press. Press aren't invited.

So lets approach this logically. A site Expert Reviews generates a report or rumor that incorrectly states the PS Event in February will be for press, when press aren't invited. Would you introduce your flagship product at an event without any press there and only retailers? What is worse is the quality of game journalism that has Develop and a number of other relatively respected online publications propagating this baseless rumor.

These guys have it right:

I bought PS3 day 1 and if I'm a fool then I don't want to be wise. Played Resistance: Fall of Man and beat it like 10 times. Was so awesome and exciting to be playing the day of release. I own an Xbox 360 also (on my third one) AND that is a console I'd consider waiting on. Only because Microsoft doesn't care how shoddy they manufacture their products.

Calactyte, this announcement isn't for the system itself - in the terms of "pre-release" they are speaking of the SDK (Sony Development Kit) for the PS4... It could mean jack to us but for the devs that means something solid in hand that they can use to build on. There are a lot of rumors out there about the Sony Orbis and xbox Durango but these names have already been lost in the wind with the media. Things get scrapped off the table all the time but I suspect that this will be a big move if not the first move in the direction of the next gen console being released 2014.

I'm going to get a Wii U at some point definitely cause I gotta play Super Smash Bros 4

As for the PS4 and the Xbox 720, I'm only going to get one of them for MK10 and it's going to be the cheaper one

Honestly, this is probably going to be the last generation of gaming I'll really be into

I'll probably just follow the story for MK and nothing else

The question is will you guys buy a PS4 at launch if MK10 is one of its launch titles? And no, I don't think they'll reveal something involving the PS4 at this event, way too early.

No guarantee, I always base my first console on Exclusives.

So Xbox is gonna need to show me some love outside of First Person Shooters or it's PS4, all over again.

I honestly want a PS4 just for the free online PSN offers, but then again most likely ALL of my friends may get a 720. So I can't really decide between the two, and Fighters are going to be huge on the PS4 more than the 720 also so MK10 is a must have on the 720.

Plus I can body all the PSN phags on MK10 fray *Cough* Critical..

I'd only buy a next-gen console on release date if RE7 was one of its launch titles.

Otherwise, that shit can wait. In no hurry to move on to a 720hoohaa just yet.

MAJOR determents for exclusives is my big favorite series.

Resident Evil
Metal Gear
Final Fantasy
Survival horror games like (Dead Space/ Last of US)
Twisted Metal
Mortal Kombat
Super Smash (ONLY AFTER I WAIT FOR SMASHBOARD MELEE LOVERS TO TELL ME ITS GOOD) I'm not buying no damn Brawl the sequel
BlazBlue
^^^^
These titles will earn a first day launch. Unless some off-brand new title really grasps me. I'm waiting for these. ESPECIALLY if any of them end up being Exclusives

MGS4 is the reason I have a PS3

While I like Bayonetta, it's not strong enough to make me buy a Wii-U lol.

For me it will boil down to these factors

  • Cost of online service: Why pay another fee in addition to that of the ISP, when I mostly just download?
  • Whether or not used games are blocked: I try to limit what I can spend at one time. I seldom buy games less than 5 months after its release. By the time I get around to getting it, new copies are not always available.
  • Backwards compatibility: What I loved about my PS2 was its ability to play PS1 games when m PS1 broke down. Unfortunately, video game publishers have a nasty of habit of dumping their games once the generation of consoles is over.

Although I thought about gravitating towards PC (especially since this generation has been overall disappointing), the choices of fighting games are extremely limited.

Lol, Araknyd do you know how much that thing is going to cost? In an article I read a dev said it would be comparable to one of their computers, which is around a thousand bones.

I'm going PS4 most likely. Or the Orbis as some are calling it. Fallout 4 though, I really don't want to go through the inevitable Bethesda loves Microsoft bullshit again.

Nothing really demands a first day purchase though. There are still plenty of current gen games I'm still eyeballing. Though I completely plan on buying a 3ds for Paper Mario & Pokemon, and a WiiU for Nintendo's unrivaled exclusives. Metroid prime game with current gen graphics? YES PLEASE!
