Mortal Kombat HD Remix with MUGEN

I think he meant using the original sprite as an overlay as Bleed suggested, and seeing that stuff matches.

Right, If you use the sprite as an overlay or you will have an easier time with proportions. It is really difficult to match up head, hand, foot size relative to arm and leg length by looking at a photo or image on a second monitor for example. I had this really fantastic drawing instructor who would illustrate this by having us draw a self portrait from a photo and then again using a grid and plot lines to accurately mesure facial features. The point was that the second your mind looks away and begins drawing you instantly start to lose accuracy. That is, the mind creates approximations of reality. This isn't necessarily a bad thing when being creative but in an instance where accuracy is important measuring what you see via overlay or mathematically is essential. Anyway, your stuff looks so good that the only weakness I see is in your proportions. Bleed gets his proportions perfect. Gojira has the same problem as you do with proportions though he has improved greatly with his work on Kano. Anyway my drawing instructor was an accountant who quit his job and became an illustrator and his pencil draws looked almost like black and white photos.

1000% agreed.
Eyeballing stuff is not an option.
Also, subjectivity plays a major role.
Differences that are imperceptible or meaningless to some person's eye may appear outrageous to another, and give them a totally different vibe or feel since they're looking for totally different cues.

Well, here's this.
This is by no means final.
The fists in particular are horribly broken.
I had the hardest time punching the ones in the render into something I could use.
The wrinkles in the pants gave me a nasty time too.

Here's a large version.

The shoes are so much detailed, no? I think. It's a rock. No need so much detail in shoes hehe

Cal, do you have a special trick for getting rid of noise with your Vray renders? I keep getting a lot of speckling in the shadows no matter what. Increasing the subdivision in the materials and lights, and trying different antialiasing filters hasn't fixed it.

I'm checking a bunch of tutorials on youtube and on different forums, but nothing is getting rid of it...

In global parameters - adaptive QMC ( I think it is called) needs to have more sub-divs. That'll kill the noise but increase render time.

You can lower the noise threshold, in settings - dmc sampler. However that will increase the render time (a lot).

It kinda gave me a hard time not having a reference in times when I had to redraw shadows, but well...

Oh, ok. So you decided to do everything as it has to be.
I don't know, will it be interesting for you, guys, but there's group inside VK (russian social network) about your project - http://vk.com/mortalkombathd . Almost 500 people are watching for the news of MK HD R. I don't know who's the administrator of this group, but he probably often visits the forum.

Looks like the problem was with the camera, I didn't realize there was one special for Vray. Tried it now and the noise is gone, thanks.

Notice that the vray camera has a blue custom balance by default. I tend to turn that to white and turn off vignetting.

@bleed, now that you are using vray, I really recommend you to use all the things vray can offert, such as:

lights (apply vrayshadows)
cameras
materials
displacement
also if you need it there is a vray light material which is really usefull
I've been using vray for a long time... If you need some help just let me know

you can use default materials and it will render but you know it will take longer
