Not only is it an Asian eye, it's Ho-Sung's eye.
Well, I think it's great that you used a photo reference, but I'd think that the expression in the eye wouldn't be exactly the same in one and the other, the game pic looking more squinty, which tends to raise the bottom eyelid.
That said, I think the new one is definitely better.
A little hard to tell though when the portrait is brought down to final size. They only had 1 pixel of height to work with on his eyes in the original and if they were to add a pixel to the bottom or top of his eye it would have looked huge at that resolution, so there's a lot that can be going on there and room for interpretation, however, I squeezed it down a pixel or two and very slightly flattened the top of his eye so hopefully that almost does something. lol
The 1 pixel thing also applies to his bottom teeth looking a bit higher in the arcade version.
I'm not thinking about it in terms of pixels. What I try to do is look at it from a distance, and try to think about what the expression should be.
Maybe even mentally act it out and see what muscles intervene and what parts of the face move.
I also messed with his nose, ears, chin and other very small areas. It's not as abrupt as you suggested but I think this is where I'm stopping and moving on, at least for now. I will most likely go back to all the portraits in the end and fix up a couple of things here and there.
I think it looks great.
If anything, allow me to suggest raising the left corner of the upper lip a bit like so.
(...)don't you think that you're nitpicking a bit too much? Uker, bro, this goes double for you. Your advice are always sound, no doubt about that, but often they do more damage than they're worth since they are drastically slowing the pace of already slow development. (...) If something needs to be corrected, it's actually Sub-Zero, since his stance has the most obvious mistakes in anatomy (his front arm). It gets pretty clear that he's the weakest model in comparison with others (even Scorpion's stance has no visible anatomy anomalies though they share the same mold). Liu Kang's model is actually a masterpiece in comparison to ninjas.
You contradict yourself, my friend.
Sub-zero is at such an advanced stage (namely amount of animations added to MUGEN) that I don't see anything being changed at this point.
And why did it get to that point? Because at some point someone said "yeah, this is kinda OK already, let's move on".
Now, a couple of months later the anxiety wore off, you've watched each animation for probably hours and the "details" poke your eyes, but you'll most probably have to live with it.
My main motivation for being so exasperatingly picky is that this project is only going to happen once and once things get that dreaded "it is done", they are pretty much set in stone and it's really hard to turn back (-major- props to arq for having the balls to rework his Liu Kang once 95% of people were apparently happy with it).
Call me crazy if you want, but I don't care at all how much this thing takes.
IMO the only thing we should worry about is drive dying off, which I don't think is the case.
I'd very much rather have this take as much as it has to and be happy with it, than have it take half the time and have to live with "details" that bother me every time I see it.
Ticroo, thanks to ukers constantly criticism and pressure over arqs work, we have this amazing result on lius model.
I did push for it, but I don't want to steal any credit from arq.
It was his perseverance and his abilities that got the model to where it is.
