Mortal Kombat HD Remix with MUGEN

@Mos3s
Kangs portrait looks great. Imho nothing looks out of place.

It'd be great if arq_ and Bleed provide you with renders for Raiden portrait and Kang endings.

Not only is it an Asian eye, it's Ho-Sung's eye.
Well, I think it's great that you used a photo reference, but I'd think that the expression in the eye wouldn't be exactly the same in one and the other, the game pic looking more squinty, which tends to raise the bottom eyelid.
That said, I think the new one is definitely better.

A little hard to tell though when the portrait is brought down to final size. They only had 1 pixel of height to work with on his eyes in the original and if they were to add a pixel to the bottom or top of his eye it would have looked huge at that resolution, so there's a lot that can be going on there and room for interpretation, however, I squeezed it down a pixel or two and very slightly flattened the top of his eye so hopefully that almost does something. lol

The 1 pixel thing also applies to his bottom teeth looking a bit higher in the arcade version.
I'm not thinking about it in terms of pixels. What I try to do is look at it from a distance, and try to think about what the expression should be.
Maybe even mentally act it out and see what muscles intervene and what parts of the face move.

I also messed with his nose, ears, chin and other very small areas. It's not as abrupt as you suggested but I think this is where I'm stopping and moving on, at least for now. I will most likely go back to all the portraits in the end and fix up a couple of things here and there.
I think it looks great.
If anything, allow me to suggest raising the left corner of the upper lip a bit like so.

(...)don't you think that you're nitpicking a bit too much? Uker, bro, this goes double for you. Your advice are always sound, no doubt about that, but often they do more damage than they're worth since they are drastically slowing the pace of already slow development. (...) If something needs to be corrected, it's actually Sub-Zero, since his stance has the most obvious mistakes in anatomy (his front arm). It gets pretty clear that he's the weakest model in comparison with others (even Scorpion's stance has no visible anatomy anomalies though they share the same mold). Liu Kang's model is actually a masterpiece in comparison to ninjas.
You contradict yourself, my friend.
Sub-zero is at such an advanced stage (namely amount of animations added to MUGEN) that I don't see anything being changed at this point.
And why did it get to that point? Because at some point someone said "yeah, this is kinda OK already, let's move on".
Now, a couple of months later the anxiety wore off, you've watched each animation for probably hours and the "details" poke your eyes, but you'll most probably have to live with it.

My main motivation for being so exasperatingly picky is that this project is only going to happen once and once things get that dreaded "it is done", they are pretty much set in stone and it's really hard to turn back (-major- props to arq for having the balls to rework his Liu Kang once 95% of people were apparently happy with it).
Call me crazy if you want, but I don't care at all how much this thing takes.
IMO the only thing we should worry about is drive dying off, which I don't think is the case.
I'd very much rather have this take as much as it has to and be happy with it, than have it take half the time and have to live with "details" that bother me every time I see it.

Ticroo, thanks to ukers constantly criticism and pressure over arqs work, we have this amazing result on lius model.
I did push for it, but I don't want to steal any credit from arq.
It was his perseverance and his abilities that got the model to where it is.

I'm a bit late for the party, but I just want to say: arq_hawkin, your new Liu Kang looks absolutely phenomenal!! Just like others, I can't find one single flaw with it now. I thought it was near perfect already some time ago, but now it looks absolutely mind-blowing.
You' re getting the "GOLD", no, the "DIAMOND" status from me, and I hope, now that a major milestone is reached, things will go easier and smoother for you, and your morale is on a high level.
Keep up the awesome work, you can't go wrong from now on!!

uKER's eyes keep this project honest. I worry when he doesn't nitpick at this point. Frankly uKER is exactly what this team needed to make this project a success and I consider us lucky that he doesn't get fed up and walk away since it is a thankless job.

Also want to thank laluna who has provided grueling frame by frame photo work and also arcade sprite rips. He doesn't get the credit often but he has been very helpful to this project.

That said, we don't always agree. I honestly can't see any more notable improvements to be made on Liu Kang's portrait. Just my opinion of course.

Man, that's really appreciated.
I often end up feeling like a hassle, but well, above all things I want this to turn out as good as possible.

My hat goes off to all who have had to put up with me picking on their work, and my thanks to those who have done the best to handle it as gracefully as possible.

I said it to uker on skype... the credit for how liu looks now goes to both of us, because without him liu wouldn't be the way he is now, major props to the guy and his eagle eye... YOU KNOW WHAT?.. I'M GOING TO CALL YOU EAGLE EYE :P

Uker you're eye is certainly a vital component to the team. It is agreed that you help get things looking good. So don't get any of us wrong there, but the general feeling is that the model doesn't have to be 100% and that at a certain point you can easily stop picking things out. Like the smallest details that maybe don't make much of a noticable difference unless you stare at it, up close on still frames. I know there are things that bug you when you look at them, but just remember to draw the line on where things are not really necessary.

But don't get me wrong here, as I said, your skill for seeing problems is invaluable.

No, uKER, I don't contradict anything. I pointed out the mistakes in Sub-Zero's anatomy the first time around, back when you weren't even aware of this project taking place, so as you can see I certainly wasn't the one to say 'yeah, this is kinda OK already, let's move on'. If that's what's bothering you, than better talk to Cal, he's the one that has the last say. Bleed himself admitted that Sub's arm is a bit messed up but since the model was already rigged I made my peace with it, no biggie. Bleed often says that if he ends up bothering with one thing (in this case model) for too long he'll lose interest and I can totally relate to that (it wouldn't hurt you to adopt this standpoint as well). The only reason why I brought this up again is because meanwhile almost finished model of Liu Kang was taken down and created again from the scratch (although it was pretty decent in the first place). So I figured if heavy detailing is the way things are handled now someone might want to take care of the one mistake that really catches the eye. No need for examining the sprites for hours since, unlike the most stuff you point out, it's visible from outer space that there's something awkward with Sub's hand. And there's another thing... THE FACT that ever since you joined the project, the things got unbelievably slow! In five(!) months only two fighters are added (Liu Kang & Raiden) and they are both in very early stages of development with your strict detailing being one of the main reasons for it. Yes, you have a great eye for the details, we all agree on that one, but, as ttas wisely said, focus on what's important and we just might live long enough to see this great project finished. There will be plenty of opportunities for correcting all the tiny bits in the future versions of the game.
I apologize for being too blunt and abrasive, but I believe it's necessary in order to get things going again.

Don't even bother you guys, if we keep this up we probably will just end up on the ignore list.
Doesn't matter what we say, it will end up looking like we are trying to stop Uker from helping or something like that (obviously that's not our the intention)
We will have to step aside and let them do what they do and just wait.

Keep up the good work guys and sorry if I bother you!

Uker should work for some kind of gaming developer team or something. He's like an Owl or some other animal that can see better. Got very good eyes.

Hi guys :) great work , i don't check this topic long time . Is there some new alpha videos ? Thx

P.S: And i can't found old one where was all arenas and fatalitis :/

I think they should use the original narrator, blood is also not good

I will be fixing the blood sprites and the announcer is really only lacking on "finish him" and "finish her" if you compare to the original arcade announcer. And he's going to be fixing those as far as I know.

know, with so many discussions of the voices in the new MK 1 HD mullet, I think it should be kept the voices of original locutions, just giving them a remastered. I say this because this is going to generate further discussion because it is not very similar voices and appeared as if they were coming out of the nose ...........
