Mortal Kombat 11 General Discussion Media Thread

While I can't say the song in the trailer was memorable in any way, shape, or form, there are only a count of 3 trailers where I actually cared if the lyrics had any relation to the game: Gears 3, Mario Odyssey, & Smash Bros. Can't use the lyrics excuse for why certain songs shouldn't be in certain trailers especially when a lot of popular video game trailers use songs that have nothing to do with the games themselves. Hell, the song used for the Fallout 4 Trailer was a song about messing around with a bunch of women.

Besides that, I felt the MKX Reveal Trailer was leagues better. When it came to MKX's Reveal Trailer, it felt like the music did fit with the trailer. I forgot it even had lyrics tbh because I remember the first few seconds basically introduced the next-gen versions of subzero and scorpion. This trailer to me highlighted the major issue that I had with MKX's soundtrack (during fights), which is why it personally confuses me when people complain about the choice of music used when you can barely hear it. It's not even memorable. If people want to worry about anythings, it should be the choice of music that NRS will use in the actual game.

I never said it was a good move I just chimed in to explain why WB would use it. The one thing WB want is more money from people who normally wouldn’t buy Mortal Kombat. That’s why we have guest character dlc instead of characters the mk loyalist want. We will buy the game regardless and WB knows it. It just trying to get younger people who don’t normally play mk to buy it. That’s it.

It would be good if these younger people liked music that doesn't suck. They should play Slayer or Cannibal Corpse during the trailer.

We will never get that since computers are not real instruments.
My point exactly. That song you heard on the trailer is NOT music.

Was there autotune and/or beat detective on there too? Anything that uses that is not music either.

Well, regarding the song, if it wasn't Dark f*** Raiden there fighting against Scorpion, so I was fan boying like hell, I think I would care more about the song.

I just got into argument with friends that said the music was good. It wasn't good. Has nothing to do with what's happening. If the lyrics had something to do, but not even that, except "Liu Kang" and the idea of the challenge at the end, but I won't even go to the lyrics because they are absolute trash.

It just doesn't fit. Thankfully that's not the in-game music or any kind. Not bashing rap, tbrh, but it just doesn't fit. The MKX one was less boring.

I'm biased, tho, would rather love something more rock.

Although my preference is metal, I want something that at the very least uses real musical instruments across the board with ZERO "fix it in the mix" bullshit.

Or have a song produced by Glenn Fricker.

I think NRS has enough capable people of doing a good song.

Also prefer metal, it would be waaaaaay better than this as always.

For the people who liked the trailer, I showed them what SOAD did to MKX's trailer. Good music, good editing, I remember watching that one day before release, it was pure hype.

If this trailer was before the release date, well, I would hype because of characters and imagining the story, what would be, etc. but if it was like a small spot and shitty music...well, would be a little off.

I have nothing against Rap, EDM or some Computerized beats. It just doesn't fit MK. One can put some Classical music over that trailer and it would still suck.

Hopefully NRS will learn from this mistake with their next media releases.

You think The Imperial March would work with MK?

They should have just hired Mick Gordon. The dude knows how to make music. Especially for topics like that. DOOM, Wolfenstein, Killer Instinct, etc.

Oh this argument... :)

"Computer is not THE REAL instrument" This childish argument always makes me chuckle. Sounds awfully similar to "drawing digital is not the REAL drawing".
By that logic, electric guitars, drums and all these fancy instruments rock/metal bands use are also not legit. Let's go back to cavemen days. Those guys were the real OG artists. Painting on walls with blood and flowers, while using flutes from mammoth ivory and bird bone.
I mean I understand when it comes to preference and tastes, but telling others what's the real instrument and not is just ignorant and childish. Digital music is good if it is made good and DOOM is a prime example of a damn good music.

It would be good if these younger people liked music that doesn't suck. They should play Slayer or Cannibal Corpse during the trailer.

People's likes are based on reference. On what they know. Younger generation interest in metal came back, once DOOM came crashing in 2016. But if Warner Bros puts some mumble crap, as the "song" then kids will know only that. They will will associate MK with that shit then. Can you imagine, that there are actually kids, that know Mortal Kombat as a game, but don't know about Mortal Kombat theme song?

All that mumble and half assed music that rappers make, (I am talking the guys who keep repeating one line for 5 minutes or read the shopping list) are the rage is because kids only hear that on radio now. If someone made it a law, that let's say. Only metal can be broadcasted on the radios and marketing teams would mostly push metal, then kids would be banging their heads right now. But times change, management changes and while greed was always an element in music industry, now it is more apparent as ever. Thanks to advancements in tech, and reduced attention span, it is qnantity over quality. They make a half assed product and sell it for 200$, while people buy that, cause THE BRAND.

And musicians are chosen now, by shows like "Britain got the talent", where people stand in line for hours to be told if they suck or not by 3 people, who keep making faces for the camera.

I think Guile's Theme would work.

Regarding music overall, I'd expect the NRS guys to come up with something great. Or they can hire someone to do the music for them....This guy (Andrew Hulshult) is very, very good:

They know what they're doing. 21 is one of the biggest names out there right now. They got him to retweet the trailer, his ravenous ass fans will buy anything he touches. Some nerds got butthurt about it online, but they'll forget about it in a month.

Same thing happened with MKX. Wiz Khalifa on the announce trailer, everyone mad, System of a Down for the Launch Trailer and everyone was happy again.

Most people couldn't stand the music in the trailer. Hardly shows "they know what they're doing". No shit they'll change it for the next trailer.

I am digging that OST. Another artist to the list.

Wiz Khalifa trailer didn't get the same backlash. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Were people surprised? Sure. I was surprised as well. But that song grew on me. Like it did with everyone else. I still remember the comment sections from back then, as I was counting minutes until announcement trailer. People were confused, and some were angry sure. There are always people who don't like something, but it was NOTHING even close to what MK11 trailer got. The comments praising the music choice, were drown in negativity. Not to mention, MKX trailer had actually a stronger debate about Scorpion x Sub Zero outcome, rather than the music choice.

It grabbed mainstream attention. That was the purpose. Doesn't matter if you guys get mad because the trailer music isn't going to stop you from buying the game. But having 21 in the announce trailer got some eyes on the game that normally wouldn't have noticed.

Youtube comments and forums I've seen a lot of negative, but Twitter and Facebook people have really been digging it. Just saying the trailer did more good than harm.

You do realize, that it was the video itself not the music that grabbed the attention? If video was as halfed ass, as the "song", you wouldn't be seeing hype. I don't know about Facebook as I don't have an account there, but Twitter has a fair share of negativity as well.

And of course trailer won't stop us from buying the game. Would be pretty stupid to judge the game based on a cinematic trailer with poor editing. Even if they decided to put Savage 21 as in game music, we could just mod it out. Just like we remade the trailer with more fitting music.

What would make people not buy the game is if they pulled SFV on us.
Which is the actual thing that worries me.

Funny thing about them trying to be mainstream and capture younger people is that they keep forgetting something. It isn't the kids or teenagers that drop money in hundreds or even thousands for them. Yeah sure, they can get their daddy or mommy pay for them. But they still won't be able to match what a young adult or someone in their 30-40 can drop. Hence why current games alienating the older customers are failing so much right now. So Warner Bros should be careful with following the trends. The current track record is pretty bad for the big companies.

If it's not stringed, brass, naturally percussive, or a piano, it's not a real instrument.

Computers are also responsible for abominations such as sample replacement drums, time alignment, and worst of all, AUTO-TUNE!

Yeah, yeah. Whatever floats your boat, man. I can also judge entire platform, because someone made something shit. I can pick a crappy metal band and say that entire genre of metal sucks. Same thing.

But like BBLP says. Just because someone doesn't like it, doesn't mean that will change something. Times change, things move forward. And those that remain stagnant, refusing to adapt, just... disappear.
