Re: HD Kollection in 2011?
From a purely marketing standpoint, it doesn't make sense for this game to be released this year.
Think about it. First of all, why did WB buy Midway? It's not because WB all of a sudden wanted to get into the video game business. They wanted the Mortal Kombat franchise. WB is a media company, so what they were really interested in was all of the MK characters and storylines for film development and merchandising.
However, with the purchase of that, they also got a game company. And that's pretty convenient, because everything MK originated from the game. The situation, though, has been reversed. WB now has huge interest in the game, not because they want a great game for the sake of gaming, but because a great MK game is going to spark interest in the MK franchise and add more value to the merchandising to follow. If you've been paying attention, you know that the release of MK isn't the climax of all this development, it's really just the beginning of a massive rollout of all kinds of MK media and merchandise. You can really think of the game as a huge advertisement for all of the other MK products that are going to be the real money makers for WB. Of course, this means WB has a huge stake in MK being a great game, but it's really just to sell more merchandise.
Okay, so let's say MK is a huge success. Naturally, WB will green light a sequel (if they haven't already). It seems like WB is at least smart enough to give NRS time to develop great software, so hopefully they won't rush out a sequel. I think it would be reasonable to expect the sequel sometime in 2013. That's great, but that means 2012 is going to be empty for the MK universe in terms of games. Enter HD collection. The smart money would be on releasing this collection in 2012 around the same time hype for the sequel is starting to keep the MK momentum going. I bet this game is already finished, the marketing people are just formulating a strategy for the best time to release it.
That's what I think. WB is a savvy company that really knows what it's doing.
