Kano thread - "One dead Lin Kuei, in a tick!"

Ok, so I keep getting into matches with this dude who is just sick with Ermac. I've never had an issue with Ermac before. He's actually been one of my favorite people to fight because I could rip him apart every time. Well the way this did uses him I can't even fight him. I can hang back and sling knives all day, but that's lame and he just blocks and shoots his own projectile. If I even think about getting in close I get thrown around with telekinesis. Has he changed at all with the patches? I used to be able to punish his telekinesis after blocking it, but it was a no-go today. If anyone has any advice on how Kano can stand up against a good Ermac player, please let me know because that was insane!

You can still punish his b,f,1 but sadly, not in max range.

oh, i like fighting ermac. i usually stay close to ermac (ya, not what you were thinking huh?). reason being, ermac has a huge delay when he attempts his force moves and fails (aka, you block it). then just dash towards him as he's in recovery mode. by the time your dash ends, he will see you advance and hold block (so don't throw out a combo...yet). as he blocks, just throw him. simple enough. do this about 3 times and he'll get accustomed to your dash/throw move after his failed force attempts.

now, start mixing it up. stay in close to ermac and block the force move. he will expect a throw, so he will usually crouch w/out blocking since you can't throw someone in this postion. execute the overhead B2,F1 or a low string with F3,B2.

the trick is to condition an ermac player into being more hesitant with their force moves by staying in close and letting them spam it, but as you block it, you dash in for a basic throw 3 or 4 times in a row.

Thanks Box, I'll give it a shot. I don't know what was going on, because I would block his telekinetic attacks but before I could punish him at all he would catch me in something else. This actually happened with a separate Ermac player just a little while ago. Did he get improved in the patch? I took him into practice and his projectile and teleport felt faster, but I was never much of an Ermac player so I could be imagining things. All I know is I never had any trouble with him before and now I've been owned by 2 separate Ermac players. It could be the 3 weeks of not practicing, but I was destroying everyone else...

From here I can either sweep (low), grab on wakeup, pull off a <-2 ->3 Upball combo for 18%, which starts as an overhead, or just start a simple

Try <-2, ->1 upball. That does 21%(or more) I think. For his overhead mixup.

I have a tough time pulling off his overhead. Usually have to start it from far away cause of the range. Most of the time I am dashing in and doing a throw instead.

how are you guys pulling off the B1,1,2 twice in a row? are you doing them back to back? are you using a full dash inbetween them? are you doing a 1/2 dash between them?

i can't seem to land this at all no matter what i do

It took me a while to get. There is a dash in between them. You have to wait for the third hit, where he slashes down with his knife. Somewhere around mid-slash you can input the dash command. Then just be patient and let him complete the dash, and bust out the 2nd b1-1-2. The dash timing is the hardest part, but eventually it will be second nature.

Awesome, thanks Danno! I'll give it a try. As far as his overhead, it has such good range that I'm pretty sure you can use it from sweep distance without a dash. Which means it can follow a throw or even his X-Ray, I believe. It can also function as a pretty decent anti-air in some situations. The trick is to start it way early, so your opponent's wake-up delay offsets the startup delay on the overhead.

Oh, and you can squeeze a little more damage out of the b1-1-2, b1-1-2 kombo if you replace that last 2 with an upball. I would work on just getting the 2 regular chains to link first, and then try adding in the upball. You can also get in the 2 full chains and hit with a regular kano ball, but the timing is very strict and it's not nearly as reliable as the upball variation. It does do a nice chunk of extra damage, though, so it's totally your preference.

thx for the clarification dude, i'll give it a go

Smoke. He was the first character to give me trouble because his teleport is actually fast enough to punish the knife (even pre-nerf). I finally learned that when fighting him I just had to constantly hold down block (not quite literally, but close) to counter his teleport. If you're lucky, your opponent won't learn and will keep teleporting into your "combo wall" (as I like to call it...). Most Smoke players only know how to teleport spam with him. Once they can't, they start to smokeball spam, which is easily Kano-Balled over for a quick punish. Also, Smoke's counter won't work on the Kano Ball, which most Smoke players don't seem to be aware of. Most Smoke players seems to be fairly impatient (as do most teleport players in general) so as long as you can pace yourself and play defensively you'll beat Smoke every time.

This is my arch nemesis. Now I was wondering why you do down block because the ex tele will break that and so will his combo. I thought you meant fake the motions for down back getting the opponent to think like you are inputting the commands for a knife. I think i might try that too. Crouch blocking might bait our some ex teleports which is a good strategy too. I have 3 days to get my kano refined so I can beat a good smoke.

I should probably rephrase that because I can totally see where the confusion comes from. When I say "hold down block", I mean hold the block button down, not hold the directional down button + block. I will say that I have spent about 8 hours in practice mode with Smoke over the last few days, and just as much time in his forum, and I am just not impressed. Unless you are up against a pro Smoke player, you can pretty much beat him by holding block the entire time. His only way to deal with this is throws and sweeps. You should be able to punish any blocked teleport with at least a 27% kombo. Just wait until the second he touches the ground, but before he can block, and start your b1-1-2, b1-1 Upball.

Really what this all boils down to is defense. Smoke is too fast for Kano to rush down, so you just have to go on defense and punish every mistake he makes. Smoke has a very hard time dealing with blockers, as long as you can avoid his throws and sweeps. Good luck and let us know how your fight turns out!

P.S. Are you on Xbox Live? If so we can do some Kano vs Smoke sparring if you want. I'm not a fantastic Smoke player but I'm better than most of the people I've seen play him online.

my opinion is that smoke is a terrible character in MK9. he just isn't that good. I almost never lose to him. all his moves are predictable, easy to avoid and easy to bait. i really don't get what everyone sees in him. oh well...

I played him for awhile and was loving the fact I could own online with him. Hes an easy to win online character due to lag and he can smoke bomb and teleport the crap out of people.

Im definitely too aggressive with my Kano on smoke players.. I want to dash block in and get shit going but thats always backfired with throws, jump in kicks, and teleports. Honestly, im a 2,1,2 guy. I have been practicing my back 112 but cant get anything connected with it.

Haha I guess thats my fault too thinking you were doing a crouch block. My bad. I see what you are saying and Ill let you know how that works out for me monday night.

I only have it on PSN =/

its been a while since ive had time off but today and tommorrow i should be working on trying to convert any new information into the main body of the thread.

thankyou everyone (and specifically karaokelove) for the input you have given thus far!

So something with my game messed up and it erased everything. All of my controller presets and costumes and characters and progression is just straight up gone. So I went to get Kano's alternate costume from the Krypt and apparently it's not in the same place, I'm assuming because of patches and downloadable content. Does anyone know where I can find it now? I was unable to find any up-to-date info from google. Thanks.

i put some of the new information in the second part of the threads main body listed "Spoilers for Kano's advanced strategies Q&A" as i found it easier to put it in a Q&A format when explaining some things.

in it is some more indepth explanation of certain aspects of kanos game from wakeup options (thanks to karaokelove) to a more indepth explanatino of the move choke.

also karaoke love i saw you put down in your wakeup game the overhead but you said the wakeup game ends when you use it (because your finishing with upball) if you instead finish with choke its 2% less damage but you can keep the wakeup game going. just putting it out there :P

I messed around with that and found that the recovery on Choke isn't quite good enough to maintain and effective offense. I need to update what I have down, though, because you can still dash and sweep after the upball. You can also dash-jump (as tactic I've been experimenting with and will get into later) and start the JP, F3-B2, dash, B1-1, Upball kombo. I'll update my post tomorrow with this new info. Thanks!
