Every fighting game developer has similarities between their respective franchises. I always thought the only major difference between the mechanics of Tekken and Soul Caliber was that SC used weapons. And Capcom tends to do a lot of the same stuff cross-franchise as well. SF, Darkstalkers, and MvC all use really similar mechanics.
Basically - NRS has found a formula that seems to work for them, and it makes sense that they'll reuse portions of it across their different franchises.
Soul Calibur uses the block button, has ringouts, guard impacts, and you can move in 8 directions. Tekken uses back-to-block, no ringouts, only low parries are universal, and movement is limited to 4 directions. It's much more than the presence of weapons, which is only an aesthetic difference.
That being said, it's true that all genres of video games overalap one way or another. There are very few games that defy genres. What matters though is how these nuances will affect the game as a whole.
