I must admit that my very first reaction, when I saw the new characters, wasn't very nice. In fact, I started tweeting Ed asking him WTF is this supposed to mean. Partially it is his own fault, since we weren't given any background info. They just showed us the new guys and said nada in a very "Deal with it!" manner. At least that was my impression. That's what made me upset. I didn't know who these new characters are and why they're there. As new info started coming out later on, I started to have a better understanding of these new characters and the story. Things started to make sense.
Do I like the ones they've shown us so far? Not really. To me they seem like imported characters from DC - or rather... their copies. That Aztec dude even looks like a guest character from Tekken.
I don't have anything against new characters. They are welcome and in this case needed. MK really needs some new faces to stay relevant. But, their amount and their design is what I'm concerned about. Anything more than 10 is a huge risk. I don't want mediocre fighters, I want fighters that are iconic and distinguishable and don't feel rushed.
So, um... Yes, introduce new characters, but don't overdo it. 10 new ones, with 10 unique designs, 10 unique move sets and 10 unique stories... That is a lot of work. If they're aiming for more, they're nuts. Not possible unless they want the last 4 to feel rushed and dull.
And um... please... more originality and more crazy. We need crazy. D'Vorah is okay, but Bane 2.0 and Mr. Tekk-Import are a bit boring already. I'm not calling him Kotal Kahn, there is only one Kahn. As for Ms. Cassie Cop, well, I like the idea, but is that another guest character? Jill Valentine says Hi!
