I think Mortal Kombat fans are weirdly isolated in the fighting game fandom. The fans of other franchises don't play this one, and a lot of the MK fans don't play other fighting games. So this kind of 'next generation' thing seems so out of left field for a lot of people. But rest-assured, lots of Fighter franchises iterate this way, and when they do, they often somehow make it the hallmark entry of their respective series.
Garou MOW is possibly the best game in the Fatal Fury series, and a lot of people consider Street Fighter 3: Third Strike to be the best SF game. What those have in common? Much like this MK, they take place after a time-skip with an almost entirely new roster of characters. Hell, Street Fighter 2 was this kind of sequel as well, technically!
I wonder what the op would have Boon do? Never make a new Mortal Kombat? We can see just from the characters announced already that they're going to be creative and diverse. I'm not worried. And if I was it'd be completely pointless.
