Is Ed Boon sure he's doing the right thing?

I think Mortal Kombat fans are weirdly isolated in the fighting game fandom. The fans of other franchises don't play this one, and a lot of the MK fans don't play other fighting games. So this kind of 'next generation' thing seems so out of left field for a lot of people. But rest-assured, lots of Fighter franchises iterate this way, and when they do, they often somehow make it the hallmark entry of their respective series.

Garou MOW is possibly the best game in the Fatal Fury series, and a lot of people consider Street Fighter 3: Third Strike to be the best SF game. What those have in common? Much like this MK, they take place after a time-skip with an almost entirely new roster of characters. Hell, Street Fighter 2 was this kind of sequel as well, technically!

I wonder what the op would have Boon do? Never make a new Mortal Kombat? We can see just from the characters announced already that they're going to be creative and diverse. I'm not worried. And if I was it'd be completely pointless.

Whatever the final roster size is, i think 1/3 of that number being new characters is the right amount of them. And another 1/6 belongs to post MKT characters.

So, if the final humber is 30, there going to be 10 completely new characters, 5 post MKT favorites and 15 MK1-MKT ones.

No, I understand the need to grow the roster, but the game can't simply be MK9+ so members of the roster have to go, it's really simple. I can't wait to be surprised by what happens in the new MKX story.

Though, I can understand being a fan of a character and being afraid to not ever play as him again, maybe NRS should come up with a non canon fan service game like Tekken Tag Tournament, regrouping all characters SINCE MK9, kinda like Armageddon, with hopefully more character specific fatalities and balance.

SF3 didn't change the gameplay too much though. But there are worlds between MK9 and MKX gameplay.

To be fair, MK9 was also pretty much an all new fighting system with the exception of familiar special moves which i'm sure will still remain the same. It's not like they're working from tradition at this point, it's all still pretty new, 1 game in on a reboot of the whole franchise.

I think a more relevant example is Street Fighter III, which went with a new generation. While embraced by the fgc, it didn't sell well and left a big gap until IV. They were a bit too ambitious and you can tell how they rectified it through the roster from iteration to iteration.

SFIII is a textbook example of why you NEVER build a rookie-heavy roster. Rookies do not sell the games, proven stars do.

Just so you know, the pre orders for this game have been through the roof. At my local gamestop the guy said MKX has been its highest and fastest selling pre order in a long time and has already blown away the pre orders for MK9.

Whiny fanboys saying IM NOT BUYING THE GAME BECAUSE STRYKER, SHEEVA and, BROKEN ASS KABAL AREN'T IN, means absolutely nothing at this point.

Personally, this is the most excited i've been about Mortal Kombat in a long time. This is the MK game I have been waiting for since the garbage that was Armageddon. A game that introduces new characters and gives us a brand new story

If you want something "new" for MK, does that mean pissing off the majority of the fanbase by dropping Sub-Zero and Scorpion? Does that mean removing the block button and implementing back-to-block? Does that mean removing blood and Fatalities? MK ceases to be MK if you do all of that because you took away all of its defining traits. Staying true to one's identity supercedes originality.

I'm sure we'll see plenty of characters as DLC. As much as I love how MKX is looking, I too wish there were more classic characters in the game, but for the sake of the franchise growing, this game is in need of new faces.

What's more important to the franchise? New faces, or units sold? Do new faces guarantee sequels?

Remember SF3.

That's the thing. We just don't know yet. However, just having the Mortal Kombat title on the front will get people excited, but like I said, I'm not sure how the new characters will sit with new players we will just have to wait and see.

If you have a rookie heavy roster, you run the risk of sinking MK. Look what happened to the Street Fighter after what happened with SF3. They didn't make another game for nearly a whole decade. Is THAT what you want to happen to MK?

Well I don't play Street Fighter, first of all. I don't want MKX to flop, but I also don't want a glorified MK9. I want a new game.

I'm sure to any developer, its how it sells.

How do you know how well a game is going to do with new faces. Is it impossible for new faces to support the game just as well as old ones?

Anyways, I don't know why you're still crying. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are in the game, obviously. I'm sure other og characters will be revealed too.

Why are you only mentioning instances when introducing a bunch of new characters did not work out? Look at Tekken 3, it introduced a s***load of new characters and it was probably the most successful & well known game of the franchise. Tekken 6, on the other hand, was just a glorified version of Tekken 5 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 just an extension of Tekken 6. I used to be a huge fan of the Tekken series, but I completely lost interest in it since it brought nothing new to the table for almost a decade... now that is something I don't want to happen to Mortal Kombat.

There is a need to take a risk so that a franchise does not end up in a deadlock, you can't keep rebooting the same game.

If you don't want the game to flop, you need to have at least half the roster stacked with stars. And you ignoring what happened with SF3 is exactly the problem; those who ignore history are bound to repeat it.

Half the roster is already packed with 'stars' if you are going by the latest rumor. Your point is moot.

Tarkatan is probably trolling again, smh.

Basically what @MKShao_Kahn said, there has been many precedents where the inclusion of new characters reinvigorated a franchise. And obviously MKX will not take the drastic approach of SF3.
