Of course this was going to happen. I can't help but laugh at the people who thought there were going to be more DLC characters.
And as much as people may not like this, but Injustice is more balanced than MK ever was. Hopefully they get the balance right with MK10 but I doubt it.
When MK9 was released, there was much more riding on it than just balancing issues. MK was on a serious decline quality-wise thanks to Midway's insatiable need to get "a" MK-branded (ie not just a strict fighter) game out the door ASAP. It seemed in the past every time I turned around, some new MK-branded game was being thrown out there. Ed Boon and his team were working overtime and then some to meet Midway's "needs".
WB saw the potential and snapped up the franchise, but allowed the team two essential things Midway never did: time and resources to make the best game possible. MK9, while not perfect, is the best iteration of MK in its twenty year history. Its characters, its story, its fighting mechanics, graphics, audio, etc were a lavish display by NRS showcasing their own love and respect for the franchise as well as a nod to the loyal fan base.
I say this as a man who literally grew up with MK; I'm old enough to have been lucky to play MK1, MK2, MK3/UMK3, and MK4 in the arcades and followed the series onto home consoles. I am a massively unapologetic fan, but I'm not blinded. As much love and respect I have for MK and NRS, I'm also not ashamed to be critical of them too.
MK9 was far better balanced than any other MK game, but yeah, it could have used a few more nips and tucks before calling it a day.
Injustice: Gods Among Us arrived off the coat tails of MK9's success. IGAU had a lot to live up to, but yet it didn't, as DC Comics and its characters never really had their own fighting game (MK vs DC doesn't really count per sé). IGAU was, by the long and short, a great attempt at creating a different fighting game with beloved and popular comic book characters.
Is IGAU perfect? No, it's not, even though it seems more balanced than I expected it to be, it suffers from a fair amount of flaws, but given what IGAU had to live up to, I think it was a good game.
The one thing I wish NRS would balance better, aside gameplay, is alternate skins/costumes. In both MK9 and IGAU, some characters were incredibly favored and others were horrifically neglected.
