Probally for a Chaosrealm arena the players could be standing on a floor and the background is in a vertigo, with other pieces of floor "flying" around, people walking upside down, things like that.
I think arenas should explore more the story that surrounds it. For example, fighting in Goro's Lair and suffering an uppercut could lead to Shang Tsung's Palace. More to the corner he could be at Palace Gates, and, if the player wasn't knocked upwards, they could be kicked into a wall of Goro's Lair that leads into The Pit (I'm using MK:SM areas, the game is mostly non canon, but many of its environment was used as canon in MK9).
I also hope that in MKX they use the background with more people. We see that in Outworld's Market some people are watching and in the back some are "working". It would be nice if other characters would be fighting on the back, but those couldn't be rivals already beaten or who the player had performed a fatality. If Armageddon once happens the way it did before, this would be a nice background.
