I've been a fan since the very beginning. I remember buying a copy of EGM and looking at screenshots for the home versions of MK and thinking it sure looks like the arcade, I hope it plays as well (which, of course, it didn't, but whatever).
Whether I have been into video games or not throughout the 20 years of MK, I have always followed the MK franchise. I even went to the MK4 road tour, remember when they put MK4 machines on tractor trailers and paraded them around the country letting people play them before the official release?
I bought MKDA and loved it, though I agree it was for a new generation. Even though I liked the game, I never quite got the timing of it and it was kind of more of a button masher for me. I have never really liked fighting games where you can't jump over your opponent, but it was MK, so I dealt with it. I really, REALLY loved Deception and I think that was as close to capturing the true MK feeling that the team has had since MKII, even though I still didn't "get" the engine, I still had a great time mashing buttons.
Like almost everybody else, I didn't care for Armageddon and my copy still probably has a few fighters that I never even bothered playing with once. I was fine with the fighting engine since I never really got the 3D mechanics anyway, but I found the kreate a fatality system both lazy, cumbersome, and unsatisfying. I could pretty much say the same thing about MK vs. DC, but I did at least play with that one a little bit more. I actually didn't hate that game. Even though the lack of true fatalities was horribly annoying, I thought it was kind of neat to play MK style fighting with other characters. I thought the MK team did a decent job making lemonade out of lemons, figuring someone in the marketing department struck a deal with DC and corporate Midway basically forced them to make the game. At least I hope that's what happened, or else Boon had a major brainfart. Maybe someday he'll write a book and we will get the full scoop on it.
I never got too into the side games. I remember renting MK Mythologies and laughing at how absolutely terrible it was. I don't remember much about it except for falling off cliffs a lot and horrible load times. The less said about Special Forces, the better. I did almost finish Shaolin Monks with a friend in co-op mode, but we both agreed it was a fairly average game at best, only made above average because it took place in the MK universe.
So I guess you could say I've been a huge MK fan since the very first game, but that doesn't mean I have liked every game they have made. MK, MKII, and Deception have been my favorites. That seems to put me in line with most of the old school fans here. The only difference is I would put UMK3 toward the bottom, maybe AT THE VERY BOTTOM of my list. A lot of people seem to like that game, but for me it was the ultimate disappointment as I was expecting a leap as awesome as MKII was from MK1.
