What if some chapters span years and aren't necessarily confined to the time period they start in? Like say for Johnny's chapter, we start off in the present and it's brought up that he defeated Shinnok, so we play that out, then he talks about how he defeated whoever 10 years ago, so we play that out, then he fights some goons in the present, etc.

I think this scenario is most likely to happen.
I had originally envisioned something similar with Raiden explaining to the younger generation how they got to the 25 year mark (similar to the Deadly Alliance intro around the camp fire), and those moments being playable flashbacks to certain times in the 25-year span.

I like your idea better, though. :top:
