benefits of real martial arts

Ok - I don't usually post on forums (just usually anonymously skim the topics for MK tips/info). But I just got something surprisingly helpful from one of the threads here, with a resource on benefits of martial arts & fitness:

Anyways, he pointed out an article about martial arts & chi kung for cancer. I happened to print this out for my dad (who finished chemo recently), and for the first time, he actually went to the gym with me! He's even thinking about finding a chi kung class - we'll see if that actualy happens. Anyways, just wanted to point this out, in case anyone here can derive a similar benefit. Looks like there's also a couple articles on fitness training for martial arts as well as nutrition. Looks like the person who wrote the articles practices kung fu and maybe is an MK9 player too...

Thanks for the heads up! That is an amazing article indeed and Im printing it as well. Glad that this has helped your dad in a great way. Im taking up Tai Chi as well and practicing it is one of the best decisions I have taken in my life as it has transformed me completely, both mind and body. I recommend all who can spare time to try it out cause it revitalizes your mind and body in such an amazing way.=D

First off, hope everything goes well for your dad and has a quick recovery. Its a real interesting subject. I watched a scientific study on chi with the shaolin monks before and thermal scannings showed that body teperature changed rapidly where ever the monks focussed it in their body. They also gain amazing strength from it as well and idk what it is exactly but I would love to spend time training with them.

Sorry, but in a world where guns, halberds, and nuclear ballistic warheads are a reality they are merely a more rigorous physical activity than running.

yeah why bother learning boixing when you could be a nuclear physicist instead...

I am practicing Ju Jitsu for almost 11 years now, and I can tell you it really helped me with fights at school. It's also great for working out your muscles and building up a good body.

Not only are the martial arts excellent for the body, but for the mind as well. I did Tae Kwon Do when I was younger. Now I'm trying to get back into it (after school).

Where, other than in the Vatican, are halberds a reality? ;-P

Consider that most people in the US don't own a gun, and if a criminal owned a gun and was proficient with it, your MA training would be useless. You'd probably be dead before you could land anything. But against the petty criminals that usually do muggings and stupid crap with knives and unarmed sometimes, MA training can save your life (and your wallet). Not to mention it's great for dealing with the stupid drunk.

"Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon."

And who is the functionally retarded individual you are quoting? and where do I find him?

Exactly! Not only do you contribute to society and help humanity satiate it's gluttonous hunger for scientific advancement, but you don't suffer brain damage either.

Yup. See, good exercise. Just like I said.

Well,if you were being attacked by six bears, would you rather just beat on them or have a gun?

I'd rather have a my trusty rocket-powered spear.

Why not do both? You'll be surprised how much of a relaxation it is to have something like boxing or MMA while you pursue your scientific interests. Plus, you'll keep your body and spirit as well polished as your mind.

Event though I'm into MA as an art and philosophy... if we were just considering practicality and self-defense, Krav Maga is hands down the style that will save your ass.
