All things Tanya! - Official Diskussion Thread

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

Wait! when has it been revealed that Tanya isnt a "ninja"? I thought it was widely accepted and confirmed in Khameleon's Bio Kard.
As for the palette swap ninja stuff( no i dont like it), but i wouldn't mind her mk4 outfit like kitana and mileena have their mk2 outfits. But if DLC only get 1 alt then no, she should have another NEW outfit created IMO.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

ALSO you guys may not like them but its more than proven that NRS fanbase LOVES PALETTE SWAP ninjas.

Not this again...
Sorry, it's not you, I am just so tired of this discussion. It's actually not that long ago this was brought up in one of these threads (can't remember which).

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

She's absolutely one of the palette swap ninjas. She was a palette swap of Kitana in MK4, even! There's nothing wrong with that -- Mileena and Jade are great characters, and were also Kitana palette swaps to start with.

I think a Klassic MK2 skin would be cute and would probably help secure her a firmer place in the MK fandom. I wouldn't want it to be her only alt, though, no. An MK4 Klassic would be ideal but I dunno if they'd bother whereas they have the MK2 model already done.

This is a wrong assessment. Alright, let me explain.
Kitana and Noob were both going to be on the main roster in MK4. However, the MK team decided to make new characters instead. So therefore they took Kitana's model and Noob's model and used those assets to create Tanya and Reiko respectfully.

A palette-swap is when taking an already established character model/spriteset and recolour it. Hence the name palette (the colours used) swap (changing those colours to other colours).

That is not the case with Tanya and Reiko though. Reiko got a new head instead and his gauntlets are unique, and Tanya's costume and hairstyle were altered as well, so they would NOT be palette-swaps. Jarek shares the same story, where initially Kano was to be in, but was changed into a new character.

In MKA for the Wii, Khameleon needed a 4th special move to fit Chameleon having 4 special moves from the male MK "ninjas", but there were only 3 female MK "ninjas", those being Kitana, Mileena and Jade. They could have given her a move from Frost (who is basically a female representation of a male MK ninja), but she was blue like Kitana, so that wouldn't work. So they gave her Tanya's fireball.

Tanya has never been a ninja though. Nothing about her is like a ninja. She wasn't even one of Shao Kahn's assassins like Kitana, Mileena, Jade, Reptile, Noob, Ermac and Rain were (Funny how all the palette-swaps with the exception of two originals, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, have all been Kahn's assassins *Edit: How could I forget about Smoke?! XD). She is dressed like a female Edenian, just like Sindel is, but Sindel isn't considered a ninja because of it.

But fine. If you want to call her a palette-swap ninja, then you call her that.

I'm aware what the word 'palette' means. Obviously Tanya has some unique assets beyond just a recolor, but the fact remains that she was a character derived from Kitana's model with some minor modifications.

How is nothing about Tanya like a ninja, in Mortal Kombat terms? She wore a brightly colored leotard like the other three, had a special kick move like Mileena and Jade (also akin to Kitana's square wave punch), a projectile weapon like the other three (her boomerang) -- and she has an invisibility power even, which the other three never had! The most ninja-y power of all.

"Frost was blue like Kitana, so they used Tanya" is a strange justification to me. It's not like Khameleon's uniform changes colors in Armageddon or something. Do you have a citation for that?

It seems much more likely that, as a character originally derived from Kitana like the other two, Tanya was immediately added to Khameleon upon her return... because like Mileena and Jade, she is a 'ninja' like Kitana. In this context, as they're obviously not Japanese, 'ninja' in the Kitana sense seems to mean 'Edenian female martial artist in a leotard who fights stealthily and acts as an enforcer'.

Tanya serves the same role as 'ambassador' (her euphemism, but she's actually an enforcer) for the Deadly Alliance that Kitana, Mileena and Jade served for Shao Kahn. Just because she doesn't wear a mask doesn't mean she isn't the same sort of character; Kitana doesn't wear a mask either in 4/Gold.

You're acting like ninja is a dirty word, when in fact the ninjas, male and female, are some of the most beloved Mortal Kombat characters by the vast majority of the playerbase! Nothing wrong with Tanya being one of their number. She is still a unique character with her own thing going on, just like Mileena and Jade are.

Khameleon's costume DOES change colour in Armageddon. It switches colours when using the special moves even.

And other characters have kick moves and projectiles, so not sure how that makes them ninjas. And as said, Sindel wore a leotard as well, with long gloves and thigh-high boots... so in your definition, she would be a ninja too.

Ninja isn't a "dirty word", but people use it so wrong. When Erron Black was announced, JUST because he wore a mask, people called him a ninja-cowboy. It is so cringe-worthy!

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

Are we still debating how Tanya is and isn't a female ninja?
She might've been in launch, but she is not a ninja now. She is the closest thing to a female sorceress we can get.
If she ever was a palette swapped ninja, she isn't now.
Shut the book, end of story.

I stand corrected! I must have seen a video where she was modded to stay teal. Didn't have the Wii version myself.

I'm saying Tanya fights like Mileena, Kitana and Jade do, and she had a projectile weapon like the fans/sai/glaive. Sindel never had anything in common with Kitana in moveset or design. Tanya was crafted in the Kitana/Mileena/Jade mold, that's all I'm saying.

To be sure, but Ermac isn't anymore either and he's still considered part of the grouping. That's all I'm trying to say.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I can see where people are coming from when they suggest Tanya is a 'ninja' but I don't see it that way personally. I think it probably stems more from the leotard since she pretty much debuted in the same way Kitana, Jade and Mileena did.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I mean, it's not really a relevant designation anymore post-digitized era, but it's something the fans care about.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

Here's a better challenge for the people saying she's a ninja.
Find official confirmation from any, any director saying she's a ninja.
I want to see exact proof of her being one of the female ninjas.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

LOL, TH at this point i dont think it matters, Tanya just like Ermac and Reptile have developed from their original designs for the better IMO.

I mean... Khameleon mimicking her is a pretty direct confirmation!

It doesn't actually matter. Like Ermac she's become her own thing at this point.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

Well, as said, call Tanya a ninja if you want. I will never accept her as one though, and I have enough to support my reason not to.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I mean, I'd never call her one in-universe. But in-universe I don't think Kitana, Mileena or Jade have ever been called a ninja either. It's just a fan term for the set.
