No problem. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say that the default ME2 start makes you choose some very bad ME1 choices that can be avoided if you actually play the game.

I would definitely recommend picking up the first game, that way you can carry over your save file from ME1 instead of using the default ME2 canon start (which is generally pretty bad). Plus, the first game is awesome anyway. So yeah, beat the first, than go buy the second. Some of the decisions from the first will have major impact on the series.
