Street Fighter V announced, for PS4 and PC only!

Re: Street Fighter V announced, for PS4 and PC on

Phil spencer is only talking about investing in KI instead of street fighter because they own the IP. They already have a fighting game so it doesn't make sense to blow all these funds on a franchise that will also be on ps4 because capcom wanted more money.

So, the strategy was for MS to drop the Capcom deal and let Sony win, rather than a possibility of making extra revenue with potential SFV sales?
That doesn't make sense from a business standpoint, given that the sales of SFV, alone, would have likely justified giving Capcom what they were asking for.
I can't exactly fault Capcom (a company who is going bankrupt, btw) for wanting to get more money out of the deal.

Re: Street Fighter V announced, for PS4 and PC on

I'm sure killer Instinct sells like hot cakes so it's no skin off of MS back but wouldn't it make more sense for a third party publisher to release your biggest franchise on all systems especially if you're on the verge of bankruptcy for maxium profit? I don't know how big the paycheck that sony wrote them was but I hope it's worth the reprocusions.

You're not getting it.
Capcom likely wanted to partner with BOTH Sony and MS, but MS turned them down in favor of backing Killer Instinct instead.

If I'm selling a car and you don't want to buy it, I can't force you to buy the car.

Same goes with the MS and Capcom example.
If Capcom wants to also sell to MS, but MS says "No" because they chose to favor Killer Instinct, that's on MS.
Capcom can't force MS to buy into it.

Killer Instinct is a flash in the pan. Just like in the 90's. You have no one to blame other than your beloved XBox. To even think, to contemplate having Killer Instinct ( a franchise dead for nearly 15 years) is better to have than a consistently relevant fighting game is absurd. They just don't want cross platform as it gives no incentives to owning Xbox. The PC argument is redundant also since its alot more open source than a games console.

Its becoming obvious there's a huge amount of capcom fanboism here so I leave it at that. The fact is we don't know the paticulars of the deal outside of what sony says. IMO microsoft (fanboism aside) didn't want to be spending the ranson just so they could get street fighter early because they know capcom will still release street fighter 5 on xbox on a later date. If that makes them the bad guy to you whatever Capcom isn't going to completely ignore the xbox audience in the west forever it's too big of a market.

I am ignorant on this point, so if someone who knows this can inform me, that would be great:

If someone wants to make a game for a console, say Capcom wants to make SFV for PS4, do they need Sony's permission to do so? Do they need to pay Sony for releasing their game on the PS4, or does Sony need to pay Capcom for getting the game on it? Does money exchanging need to be a thing at all, or would something like Sony paying Capcom just be to get them to make the game exclusive?

How does it work exactly?

Because if Xbox says no to SFV's cross-platform play, can Capcom still make SFV to Xbox, just without said feature? Or are Microsoft turning SFV away completely, because for it to be on Xbox, Microsoft would have to pay Capcom?

You need the company's permission, in the form of a license, to create a game for their console. More than likely it went down like this

Capcom: Here's SFV
Microsoft: Wonderful
Capcom: One of the features we're pushing is cross platform play
Microsoft: That's that shit I don't like, we wont grant you a license to create this game for our platform unless you remove that
Capcom: Well then it looks like SFV is PS4 exclusive

Ah, of course, licensing...
I wonder if Capcom made a version of SFV without the cross-platform play on it, it would then get the license to be on Xbone...

It would. But Capcom doesn't want to do that for some reason. Maybe it's a huge aspect of the game, or maybe it's a higher up's ego.

When SFV is released, if it looks any good, I might invest in a PS4. As I've mentioned in earlier posts, I bought an Xbone because it had a game I wanted, and PS4 haven't had a single game I wanted until GGXrd was announced, but since it will be released for PS3 as well, and I have a PS3, I chose the Xbone.

When third party developers suddenly go exclusive though when they weren't in the past... it makes me cross. Doesn't matter what the reason is.

I bought XB1 for KI too.
Turns out that I hate KI though, so I'm hoping Bethesda justifies my purchase with more console exclusive dlc for Fallout.

As much as I love exclusive action on each console, making dlc exclusive for a game like Fallout would really ruffle my jimmies...

I generally dislike console exclusive stuff. I can understand that first party developers making games for their own console, that only makes sense, but otherwise I'd prefer if game developers made their games as available to as many consoles as possible.

More like…..
Capcom: Here's Street Fight V
Microsoft/Sony: Wonderful
Capcom: There's a catch though….
Microsoft: Ugh..What's the catch?
Capcom: We are putting it up for auction and who ever pays for the funding gets the game earlier than the other guy!! We got drug habits to feed!! biaoches and blow isn't getting any cheaper!!
Microsoft: That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard nobody would ever be this stupid!!
Sony: We'll do it!!!

You so don't know me, if you think I'm a Capcom fanboy.
I'm just debating business practices.

Chances are likely that something like this happened (since everyone is throwing in their own theory)............

Capcom: We're doing SFV
Sony / Microsoft: OK
Capcom: One of the features we're pushing is cross platform play
Microsoft: That's that shit I don't like, we wont grant you a license to create this game for our platform unless you remove that.
Oh, and we'd rather support our first party fighter, Killer Instinct (per Phil Spencer's quote).
No, thanks.
Capcom: :(
Sony: Sounds good to us, and it could help sell more consoles, while also competing against Killer Instinct.
Also, since MS doesn't want to participate, we can make it contractually exclusive.

I stand by what I said and what Commander says. Nobody is paying Capcom more money for exclusive release.

"We would rather support Killer Instinct" has got to be the best joke I have ever heard for a while.

Wonder if they will bring back Tao Feng. That was another good Xbox fighter.....

This is amazing. It pretty much makes Xbox One obsolete with the Pro FGC. GGXrd, SFV.....
