Personally, I prefer more characters with one style over multiple variations of fewer characters.
I don't think so.My concern is could this new system eliminate alternative costumes? That really worries me because the variations have effects on the costumes like Scorpion's swords, Sub-Zero's mask, etc. I hope they don't do away with alts because of the new variation system.

If you look closer, the only difference between variations so far is different textures, including 100% transparent ones.
Let say full Scorpion's model is a ninja with fire on his arms and swords on his back, but for different variations some of these details have 100% transparency. Swords & fire (full model) are always here, but you simply don't see them since they use transparent textures. Sub-Zero is even easier, basically a modern day pallete swap.
Like, even with classic sprites you can do this:
![]()
his mask and arms are now using new default colors, that are totally different from each other, so i can edit them separately and get all these (and more) variations by using different palletes:
![]()
the main/original sprite is still the same.
MKX use the same method, but there are models instead of sprites and textures instead of palletes.
the main/original model is still the same, but with different textures.
Yes he would, if needed. Long hair in some games work that very same way - hair have connection points to the head, but with it's own physics and can be removed by simply using invisible texture (you set alpha channel to 0).Here's an example: What if Sub-Zero's alt was unmasked, We can notice his costume in the game shows his mask being connected to the actual cowl. So if you use the variation with the frozen mask on an unmasked alt, would he just have a floating frozen mask on his face? See what I'm saying?
I know this would probably be too much work for NRS but it would be great if the alternate costumes changes based on the variation.

How would you all feel if Cyrax/Sektor weren't their own character, but considered "different iteration" of cyborg tech?

I doubt that would happen. How would they have their own fatalities?
