The three different fighting styles per character

Ummmm. The 3 variables apply to combos not just specials... You're gonna have to master 3 sets of combos and special moves now. Personally I love the idea of the 3 stances/variables/styles whatever you want to call it lol. Adds strategy to the game, I don't mind that you can't change variable during the game. We've seen that in previous games, and for MKx it being you have to select at character screen to me will make things interesting. It basically means more combos and specials to learn and I think that's great.

I have no complaints about this game up to this point

My concern is could this new system eliminate alternative costumes? That really worries me because the variations have effects on the costumes like Scorpion's swords, Sub-Zero's mask, etc. I hope they don't do away with alts because of the new variation system.
I don't think so.
If you look closer, the only difference between variations so far is different textures, including 100% transparent ones.
Let say full Scorpion's model is a ninja with fire on his arms and swords on his back, but for different variations some of these details have 100% transparency. Swords & fire (full model) are always here, but you simply don't see them since they use transparent textures. Sub-Zero is even easier, basically a modern day pallete swap.

Like, even with classic sprites you can do this:

his mask and arms are now using new default colors, that are totally different from each other, so i can edit them separately and get all these (and more) variations by using different palletes:
NPLks2S.png

the main/original sprite is still the same.

MKX use the same method, but there are models instead of sprites and textures instead of palletes.
the main/original model is still the same, but with different textures.

Well, technically speaking each vari has 3 different costumes, wouldn't that be considered "3 different costumes" - I agree with you though. But they could just say well we have 3costumes /character. Why should we make anther 1-3 costumes. Variety is always a nice thing though..

Here's an example: What if Sub-Zero's alt was unmasked, We can notice his costume in the game shows his mask being connected to the actual cowl. So if you use the variation with the frozen mask on an unmasked alt, would he just have a floating frozen mask on his face? See what I'm saying?

This idea is absolutely great because all 3 play differently which I love. Mortal Kombat got more technical which is great. Can't wait to see more of this with other characters.

its a weird one. on one hand its cool but on the other it would be frustrating to have favourate moves from each style but never be able to combine them.

Yes he would, if needed. Long hair in some games work that very same way - hair have connection points to the head, but with it's own physics and can be removed by simply using invisible texture (you set alpha channel to 0).
The other obvious way is to create a separate model, but it depends on what you need to have and what cheaper, anyway it's 100% possible.

I know this would probably be too much work for NRS but it would be great if the alternate costumes changes based on the variation.

We shall see.
At least classic costumes DLC can be done for ninjas. MK1 for variation 1, MK2 for second, MK3 for third.

They made it work in MK9 with Cyrax/Sektor human alternates, seems like this would be a lot less complicated. I'd be incredibly surprised if they did away with alternates.

Sure Mortal Kombat is getting more technical, which i'm so glad it will be, but does anyone think it'll be in the ranks of SF, Tekken, KOF, etc?
