Your favourite 2D MK

MK2 for me. The best music, and the right amount of Dark + humor (10 pairs of legs after a fatality? that was plain idiotic). Oh, and NO RUN BUTTON.

I know some people will always have dissenting opinions, but it's pretty well acknowledged by the community at large that MKII is the greatest Mortal Kombat achievement, is it not?

I agree with the collective wisdom.

I understand it when people say the original MK because it had such an enormous impact and was a great game.

What boggles my mind is how anybody can say MK3 or UMK3. It's one of the rare examples of a game sequel that is actually graphically INFERIOR to its predecessor. I remember being stoked for MK3, but the first time I saw it I couldn't believe how crappy it looked. And MK2 added Shao Khan as a boss instead of Shang Tsung. When I got to him in MK3, I was like, "I can't believe they just recycled this same guy as the boss again."

But the thing that really made me hate MK3 was how dumb the fatalities were and how horrible the animalities looked (what, did they have like 3 frames of animation each?)

To this day I can't even go back and look at it with unbiased eyes because MK3 was such a huge disappointment. Maybe my expectations were too lofty, but I would have liked it a lot better if it was just an expanded version of MKII. I always thought that most people shared this opinion.

I guess they like it because it's a faster game. Personally, I think MK2's pacing is just fine (and I can't get over how stupid MK3's fatalities look).

MK3 might have been faster, but Midway bought into the whole "combo" idea.

You could get away with button mashing in MK3 because there were so many button combinations, you were sure to hit on something. Or you could just keep jumping and running around and be kind of hard to hit.

MK2 was slower, but a lot more precise. If you didn't know what you were doing, you were definitely going to get punished and you couldn't button mash because there weren't a lot of moves and you'd probably just sand there punching and kicking air, but not stumbling upon any combo moves.

My biggest complaint about MK9 is that it plays a little too much like MK3 with its dial-a-combo starters. I would have liked it better if what a bit less frenzied and more precision based. Of course, I'm greatly outnumbered so I guess they made the right decision by using that fighting system. At least they made great fatalities, and I can really enjoy the game too as long as I don't play it online.

MK3 brought alot of things that I liked in the series. The Robots, and Kabal mainly. And the urban levels too.

But MK2 is what I think of when someone mentions Mortal Kombat. The Deadpool, Living forrest, Baraka, and Kung lao all come to mind. And It doesnt get much better than that. So I'm gonna go with mk2

MK9 is my favorite 2d MK.

But the original holds a special place in my heart because I remember playing it at the babysitters and getting it on our snes. We were on a fishing trip up in northern Wisconsin or Minnesota (can't remember) but all I remember is playing MK on a black and white tv, playing Sub vs Scorp. That was the ultimate pallet swap back then for my little brother and I. I also remember a bear came in stole our bucket of minnows.

I have a somewhat a simular story. My grandparents owned a motorhome, and we would always stay at a RV camping ground during the summer. It wasnt very big and it was very secluded, but they had a small place where you could play arcade games. And one of those was Mortal Kombat. I played that with my brother nonstop. It's most likley been there since mk came out. And I want to go back to that old camp site just to see if it's still there

You should! I love going back to visit places I vaguely remember. I have a trip lined up to go here. This is where I was born, off to the left.

Im gonna have to say MK2...the first fatality I seen was the kombat tomb stage fatality I'll never forget it after that I played that game day and night

MKII has plenty of combos and the only major differences are the button strings, the Run button and the 4-hit combo limit. The only reason someone would be able to button mash and win against someone in UMK3 is if they don't know how to play, but the same is true of MKII.

How is UMK3 imprecise? If you don't know what you're doing in EITHER game, you're gonna get trashed. It's possible to get button mashed to death in both games, but if you know what you're doing, this isn't gonna happen in either game.

MK9 isn't frenzied if you know what you're doing.

On topic: I love the atmosphere of MKII, and the gameplay of UMK3 is f**king insane. I play MKII occasionally on MAME, but because the actual fun of a game is the gameplay, I play UMK3 most of the time.

Mk 2 Again is the best and most original. Like asianic gone Satanic lol. Just Midways Finest Hour. A lot of the "professional" critics did not care for the dial a combos and I dont see any reason for the run button actually in my aeons of playing umk3 ON XBLA most used it as a fake out cancel and i really dont see its purpose. About kitana, ive seen pornos with ninja themes from the 80's and midway musta seen them too lol

MK2, I think, but I like some chars of UMK3, so I dont know, but in gameplay and character costumes MK2.

I love both games, though I love MK2 a little more, but I actually wish MK2 had a run button and combos, plus Jade playable <3

Im not a fan of the run button so I dont miss that feature, but I dont like the lack of combos on it.

1 of my favourite things about 2d MK's is that Raiden throws lightnings instead of snowballs.

Easy!
MK2 > MK > MK3

Now if you talk about the gameplay

MK2 > MK9 > MK4 > MK3 :D lol

Play that in Arcade is just a DIFFERENT experience.

Another reason why we love MK3/ UMK3 is the combo system, and their costume a fit to them , and the sprites are finely stretched. .

Yeah, and the stupid fatalities like Jax turned into a giant disappoints me. .

I've always wondered why every other lightning-based guy seems to control lightning better than Raiden. Nightwolf, and even Raiden can shoot lightning bolts and Raiden's stuck with the snowball/sparky thing. And he's supposed to be the GOD.

BTW, nice sig, Tremor. I wish they hadn't canned the HD arcade remakes...
