TMK WB Rant

I disagree almost completely with Luke, he's got a few points just poor approach. I've been doing this forever and magazines have always gotten exclusives before any websites do just because of how printed press has a delay. He isn't understanding of this, and don't let his lack of understanding cloud your judgement.

I agree with Luke 50%... i mean I understand where he is coming from, but also understand how WB promote games... Midway was always for the fans when releasing updates and exclusives. Also the method on how WB PR's are dealing with this game is completely unfair to the fans. The game is about to be released in 3 to 4 months and we are still unclear how the game is looking for modes, characters and especially the release date. Where as Marvel VS Capcom 3 has released several announced characters, videos and announced the release date along with there special edition. I feel the fustration for Luke but perhaps it's the only way all the fansites could be known becuase it seems like they are starting to get bare on the site only updates.

I think the developers of the game are more concerned with making the game, not promoting it at the moment. I'm sure as we get closer to launch, we'll actually see floods of information. I'm happy with the bits we've been getting. Part of the intrigue of MK is the unknown. If they say "Here's everything in the game, here's how it's done, and here's what's not going to be in" I'd be very disappointed. I want to be surprised when I pop that disc in. In the mean time, I'd let NR do what they are supposed to be doing. I'll probably be playing Gran Turismo 5 or some other game until MK9 comes out.

We have been getting videos and or screenshots once a week or so for the last few months. Not all character or feature reveals because unlike Midway, NetherRealm wants to polish and complete everything for a given character before they are revealed. So there has been way more than than the "one" exclusive he talks about in his video. We're getting these assets directly from WB, and they have been improving their system after some fan sites reached out "nicely" to let them know of issues with the old system. Some, like the Living Forest EnviroBio were given to us early as exclusives.

Would it be nice to get an extra exclusive for fan sites? Sure and they have been doing timed exclusives for us as well, but it's still quite a few months away. There isn't even a release date along with retail details revealed yet. "Spring" is the only date we've been told, Spring goes from March to June, that's a large window with more than 7 months in total between now and then. But until they find some unique opportunities beyond "exclusive screenshots" idea that I did't feel was very good during MK vs DC for the many MK kommunity websites I'll gladly take the same assets that all media sites are getting access to.

The big point he complains about in the video is how WB cares about other forms of media like magazines over that of the fansites. This is done for the exact purposes his ranting can't seem to figure out, that they are trying to reach all new fans with this latest game. They are trying to either bring fans back to the franchise or make them aware at how good this next game is going to be.

WB is not looking to sell just the 2 million copies that MK vs DC sold, they are looking to sell far more than that with this game. I believe with their current marketing strategy they are starting to head in the right direction from what I can see on the internet alone. These magazines and other media forms have far more viewers and readers than all of us fansites put together do currently. This is what they are trying to reach.

I expect the marketing engine to go into full steam ahead sometime next year, once the game has an official release date in target. Maybe by then Luke will have figured out what WB is working for as far as marketing, that is if he hasn't pissed them off so much that he's no longer considered a trusted media outlet. I have tried to warn him in the past to cool it, but he instead chose to attack me instead of listening to reason.

That IGN rant on the fatalities was hilarious and spot on.

As for the other stuff, I agree with him that it's pretty annoying that magazines that hated on MK for years still get exclusives. But I also understand why- because of the bigger audiences. I think WB should give exclusives and media to the fansites, but they're not obligated to. At the same time, from what we've seen the past few months, WB Games has a horrible public relations/media department in general. Hopefully they step up quickly in time for the game's release.

@ Pat:
Reaching new fans is exactly their point. They're not gonna reach a broader audience by catering to fansites that get limited traffic, so they give the better exclusives to the gigantihuge sites that non-MK fans see to pique their interest. His love of MK is blinding him and he's just acting on emotion. For his sake, I hope he doesn't piss off the wrong people cause then he's REALLY be upset.

That's exactly it, they have been offered to cover every MK game early since MK1 existed and many did and continued to. The number of cover stories dropped as the game quality decreased, but that's a given. They promote and preview the games heavily up until it's time for the review, and then they give it their opinion. As Luke even said they loved Shaolin Monks, and gave it great ratings.

His rant about the "Australian gamers" is also not exclusive to Australia as it's a world wide thing that MK is not respected as a fighter anymore. It sells well, but needed some quality development injection to compete on the competitive crowds. Which they are getting with this game from what I've seen so far. They now WANT and have the resources to be the top tier fighter, and will be doing everything in their power to do so. WB's goal with this game is to change everyone's opinions so no one questions MK as a viable fighting game anymore.

Then fans will return to the sites, as we've already witnessed here at TRMK in recent months. It'll happen and continue to happen as the game progresses. A few exciting exclusives would be great, but I'll pass on the single screenshots or character renders as exclusives. If fansites are to get exclusives at all to be special, they should be something spectacular, and lets let WB marketing figure that out.

I've been doing this for 16 years now, longer than ANYONE else in the community, and almost have received NOTHING exclusive and never expected to be given so. I work hard for the fans, and whatever I am given is awesome. All I really want is all fansites to be treated equal, and I continue to fight for that behind the scenes.

Posting a 40 minute rant on YouTube about things you really have no idea how they truly work, Luke sells computers he doesn't run a marketing firm somewhere. He bashes them while they are actually working to improve things for him. All I can say that it is NOT the way to send a message.

Agreed.
They should have chosen someone who knows what the hell they're talking about, when it comes to MK.
His Top 10 Fatalities included Jax's Stomp, Stryker's Animality (which is not a Fatality) and Babalities (again ... NOT Fatalities)???

From what closet did they pull that turd out of???

There was a reason why I unfollowed him from Twitter months ago. Nice to see he still doesn't "get it". He comes off as someone who can't see the forrest for the trees.

I cant stand Luke. TMK is a joke. And I wont type anymore about what exactly the kind of jerk off he is. I am done.

That guy is an idiot. They don't have to give him or anyone else squat. As a fan... Just be happy you're getting a new MK game to play next year. Greedy little toad.

I actually hope in response to Luke's ridiculous rant WB would stop sending him information altogether now. He says the rant is so WB will get their act together but really it's him who should be doing that...

I agree that he doesn't particularly deserve TOO MUCH, but he has somewhat of a point. He should get a tad more than he's been given for running his fan-site. The whole 40 minute deal was a bit much, but I do agree.. No one else in this community has the bollocks to stand up and say something.

Well, they do have enough common sense not to rant like 10 years old such as this case, which is as unfruitful as it gets.

Other companies with much bigger and popular franchises do the exact same thing for reasons already mentioned. Add the recent liberal use of Twitter to release media (Ono and Harada).

How does he deserve anything? He created his fan site on his own. They didn't ask him to nor expect him to keep it running. They don't owe him a single thing. He needs to grow up and see the bigger picture.

I can understand his frustration, being the obvious uber-fan he is. Though I also agree that the 40 min rant is a bit too much and most likely will do more harm than good in the end for his cause. As for exclusive's and such, I would think it quite simple. Picture your favorite MK1-Ult character, if they are female - strip them down to nothing and cover their nipples and pudenda with some cloth, and then picture their fatalities as them dismembering the opponent in some way - Just like all the other fatalities. LMFAO.
On another note, I wonder if this game will count frames like its competitors Street Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Calibur? I believe this would be key to approaching the technical fighting standard these games have set and MK & NRS is wanting to achieve.

Ding ding ding.

And I will also say this: Being a member of what is basically the Triangle of High Level MK sites, we dont get SHIT and while it would be cool to get something, i'm not mad. We'll just keep on working on breaking these games, and playing them at the highest level possible and playing them in tourneys all across the country (if possible)

He is taking things way too personally. Fansites are not representative of the entire MK community, let alone video games in general. This is a chance for MK to grow, it makes sense to show the good stuff to largest audience possible.

I honestly didn't listen to all of that, or even a quarter of it, but what point would game magazines serve nowadays if they didn't get exclusive content? With the printed word slowly becoming obsolete due to this amazing internet thing we're all using right now, there's no reason to spend several dollars on a publication that only offers you something you can easily find elsewhere.

I get where he's coming from, but still, I'm pretty sure we're all in this for the love of MK, not some rewards program.
