According to ComingSoon.net Warner Premiere will be releasing Mortal Kombat Legacy for download on iTunes, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on July 18th, 2011. While Mortal Kombat Legacy is currently available for watching on Machinima.com for free, it is likely there will be a reasonable cost to own the series. We also hope that this means that a DVD and Blu-ray version of the series along with behind the scenes features are also on their way someday as well.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy: This original live-action new media series from Warner Premiere and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution is directed by Kevin Tancharoen (Fame); stars Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) as Sonya Blade, Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) as Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs and Darren Shahlavi (300) as Kano; is based on the video game Mortal Kombat, created by Ed Boon; and takes gamers deep into the history of the warriors they know and love. Mortal Kombat: Legacy can be viewed on Machinima.com and will be available for download via iTunes, Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network starting July 18.

Also in the article, it is mentioned that Warner Bros will be giving Comic Con attendees special hotel key cards for their various properties as part of a larger hotel "key party". If we're interpreting the article correctly there will be a special Mortal Kombat Legacy keycard. Mortal Kombat collectors attending may want to get one of these cards, as they'll likely to become a rare collectors item in the future.

To me, all episodes didn't feel like they belong to the same universe. It felt like each story belongs to its' own world, and some of the stories/characters were not very well done. I liked the whole promised premise to give MK a fresh realistic take in a "Gotham-like" city seen in the short Rebirth video, but unfortunately, the director chose to change the setting and atmosphere of each episode to the point of no coherence. I give it a 6/10 all in all, and hope Warner Bros will still continue trying newer & better stuff with MK in the future.

I'm just gonna come out and say it, dont hate me I really dont like this series it doesnt feel like mortal kombat at all ,other than the character's names. Kinda like the Super Mario Bros movie was compared to the games. I blame people's obsession with Christopher Nolan's realistic style for letting this crap be made. sure it works with some things but Mortal kombat? No. The Subzero and Scorpion story was the only redeeming thing about it ,Because it at least somewhat resembles what people like about Mortal Kombat. And Dressing every character up in a suit does not make your series seem more mature or serious. God I hate this series.

The only character I saw in a suit was Shang, which in the context it happened was acceptable. I didn't really have a problem with the episodes (other than Sonya being too old, sorry Jeri, Six of Nine was a long time ago), but I do think the Rebirth trailer set the bar high, probably higher than the Legacy shorts could hope to reach. I heard there would be "seasons" of this, and season two would feature more of the later MK2 into MK3 characters.

The problem with this whole thing is people are too hung up on the characters as portrayed in a video game. As proved in times past, it's impossible to port over a video game's plot and characters directly onto the silver screen as live action and have it taken seriously; especially since MK is mythical in nature for the most part. "Rebirth" was brilliant because it took the core essences of the characters and turned it into an unbelievably great trailer spot that was very credible. I'm sure that if Megan Fox dyed her hair blonde and squeezed into Sonya's costume from MK (2011) or even MK vs DC while Jax was running around with bionic arms and shirtless with tights as in UMK3, the series would have been laughed off the Internet. Naturally, the other side of the argument would love that and deem it a success because of ample bouncing cleavage. Jeri Ryan nailed who Sonya Blade is as a person - tough, devoted, skilled, and confident. Her looks are quite incidental for the reasons stated above. The other contention is that they were trying to cram pretty much every character from MK (2011) into the series. If the "realistic" feel was to be kept from "Rebirth", and I know this is going to makes some people upset, you have to limit the cast to a select group. They were on the right path in "Rebirth" using Jax, Sonya, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Johnny Cage, Shang Tsung as, for a lack of a better phrase, "test beds", maintaining the core of each character and even the storyline, but transposed it in a "Gotham-like" setting. When they started bringing in Shao Kahn, Sindel, Mileena, Kitana, Raiden, and all the "other realm" characters and kept them as true as possible to the in-game versions; that is when I started losing interest. As someone mentioned, it quickly lost its coherency from episode to episode. I think if the "Rebirth" premise of an underground fight tournament overseen by Shang Tsung that has participants that are overrunning Deacon City was held to (as I think it was intended), the series would be incredible. You can still work in Mileena, Kitana, Cyrax, Sektor, and other beloved characters, within reason, but the context of how they appear would have to change. It can be done and be well-received, as "Rebirth" showed. Will everyone be pleased regardless of how it was done? Nope, not at all, and that's the way it should be. Break people out of their comfort zones of how they perceive these great characters and offer them a new, fresh, innovative take on them, the story, yet have subtle nods to the source content while maintaining the respect of the franchise as a whole.
