We just got official word from Warner Bros that Mortal Kombat (2011) has officially gone gold, and has been released for final disc manufacturing. Congrats goes out to everyone at NetherRealm Studios for their hard work and dedication in finishing this game.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios today announce that Mortal Kombat has officially gone gold on the PlayStation(r)3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360(r) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Scheduled to launch on April 19, Mortal Kombat is the most brutal installment of the legendary fighting game to date and is currently available for pre-order at all major retailers across North America.

Being developed by NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, the newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series' mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite Fatality is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team, a deep story mode, and, exclusively for the PS3, Stereoscopic 3D. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game's iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes including Challenge Tower and the soon-to-be-announced online modes.

I agree...spoilers suck, and so does the prospect of NRS not getting a dime from pirates and ninjas. If ninjas could fit a credit card in their outfit, perhaps we'd see more payments? Probably not...I can't imagine seeing the likes of Noob Saibot waiting in line with the rest of us misfits to purchase a copy. Maybe Subbie would just freeze the line and cut in front, while Scorp would just lasso his copy in and run. Silly ninjas...

I can't believe it took this long to go gold. Usually games go gold around a month before release. It's great news though, only 2 weeks left!

No way it just barely went gold. They would never make the release dates they have if they just started production right now.

This is just when they announced it, doesn't say WHEN it went gold.

While I agree that Pirating games is wrong, part of me can't wait till people get a hold of this game and start posting info.

sorry for the dumb question, but what does "gone gold" mean?

I think goes means right now and gone means the past.(nonsense lol) So apparently they think this is the right time to tell us the big news.

All it means is they have the final disc (shipping product) and mass production can be started. This happened a while ago or MK isn't making its release dates. I'm sure this is just a nice reminder for PR purposes.

Now that they announced it going gold, that means this increases the probability of getting it early.

Niiaaccee im happy for NRS, i hope a lot of people BUY this game so we can have more and better MKs in the future.

@ SHAWN .. i am not the one who will break street date, but i know everytime they say GOLD, i ended up playing it earlier than release date, i got one shop i deal with always break street dates. hehe

By possessing a copy prior to its release, you're technically breaking street date (and the store that sells/gives it to you early could face serious consequences). All that being said, if you do end up getting your hands on it early, I envy you!

Now I did love me some Trilogy, but when that game went gold I was nowhere near as excited as this one. I really see this game doing well, and hopefully we'll kontinue :P to see some quality MK's from here. Gold is just a tease...I can hear those discs copying in the factories! No, I'm not happy because: 1) 360 users didn't get the demo; 2) NRS/WB promotion sucks and we have to rely on moles and insiders for infos, and please, take a look at the "official" website, there's NOTHING over there! Five characters and half, that's all!!! 3) icing of the cake: the game is gone gold and they give us DEMO SCREENSHOTS??? With the same four characters and two stages over and over??? The only good thing is that has been a lot of fun browsing through the various fan sites for months on a daily basis searching for infos and stuff while talking with cool people, I'll miss these days!

I completely agree. Especially on the part about browsing sites and meeting cool peeps. I had never visited TRMK before a few months ago upon learning of the new MK game. Since finding TRMK i've met some cool peeps who've been really helpful getting me involved in the MK universe again. Gonna miss that feeling of anticipation and stuff but i am looking forward to unlocking all new stuff and posting about it on TRMK

Comes from back in the old days, where the final copy of a game would be delivered to the publisher on a gold master disc, and then they'd use that to start putting it into mass production. Its not really done that way anymore, more likely NRS would have uploaded the final version of the game over the net to WB's servers, but the term "gone gold" still sticks around

Man, to not know what "Going Gold" means seems like gaming blasphemy. How young do you have to be to not know that term? I'm not trying to bash, I'm sure not all old school gamers know what it means. But I've never seen so many people ask what it means before. Is it because I've been playing PC games forever? Maybe consoles haven't known the term for as long? Anyway, enough of me being stupid, CONGRATULATIONS NRS, WB, AND EVERYONE WHO WORKED HARD ON THIS PROJECT! (that includes you TRMK for giving us the drop on anything you found out, and sorry for the caps).

Gold master is the final game's build that is used as a master for production of the game. Yahoo Answers says that going gold is the end of Beta Testing and like you said the game being available for mass production http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070607052358AAxntHM cutting things a little bit fine methinks?!? you know in the UK 'i wonder why there is no posters advertising the game on the undergroiund / tube it's a bit weird yet the game has apparently sold out.... I hope they can meet the quota of copies and avoid MK shortage going to call up GAME.co.uk and find out the score if they will have the retail version available on release day

Time is moving fast and I can't be any happier 13days away from release about a month ago it seems like time was going in slo-mo.
