We just got dropped an exciting bit of news from Warner Bros. The official world wide release date of Mortal Kombat (2011) is set to be April 19th, 2011.

We also got the first official box art, which you can see below.

Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios bring fans an action-packed Mortal Kombat video featuring new footage of the infamous unhinged clone Mileena and what happens when she finds a new “playmate” to tear apart. In addition to the brand-new video, revealed today is the game’s official box art and release date of April 19th 2011,

Mortal Kombat is the most brutal installment of the landmark fighting game to date is set for release on the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. The game is being developed by NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and creative director Ed Boon

Update 12:00pm CST: We confirmed that April 19th is in fact the world-wide release date for the game. The game should be available at most retailers world-wide on or about that date.

Not flaming this, but I preferred the simpler cover with just the dragon/words. Anyways, it's nice to finally have a release date and I'm very happy it's not 4/26. That's a whole week later!

I ****ing LOVE that box art. I mean, I was hoping for something a little more... simple? But that's definitely acceptable.

To be honest, I don't like the cover. The Scorpion SubZero drawing is ok but for franchise rebooting purposes I would have left the black background and flaming dragon logo, more to the point. Only 3 months! please God! move time fast!... only these 3 months, I dont wanna get old fast. XD Thanks for the news Patrick! Cheers!

I feel bad for the Kratos haters with a PS3. You will now have him staring at you every time you look at the box art. =P

That's an easy fix. A small piece of black electrical tape on the outside of the box. As for the box art as a whole: Pat, is this the box art for the KE and TE only, or does this include the standard editions as well?

yes the box art will be the same for the other editions...

preferred just the Dragon symbol.

ewww. Dont like the boxart. I imagined it would just feature the Dragon logo, not Yellow and Blue uke: GREAT release date though!

Great to finally get the official word on the release, but that box art sucks, as far as box art goes. It's a great pic, just doesn't get the point across as much as the Dragon Logo, or a close up facial shot of Scorpion/Sub-Zero would have.

Great. I just realized now the entire MK series will be defined by Scorpion and Sub Zero. Hopefully they don't market the game with overloads on just those two guys. It'd feel a little forced. *disclaimer* if you really think I'm serious about the above words...please log out, go to wikipedia.org, type in sarcasm and learn

It's officially the world-wide release date too, updated the story to reflect it.

I disagree. The box art is made for people who don't know exactly what Mortal Kombat is, not for the people who buy every iteration of the franchise. Having only the dragon logo or close-ups of Scorpion and Sub-Zero would mean absolutely nothing to the people who don't know what MK is or are on the fence about it. If you see close-ups of characters and you have no idea who they are, how would that get the point across that this is a versus fighting game? Mortal Kombat is (traditionally) a 1-on-1 versus fighting game and nothing gets that point across more than having two of the characters on the front cover clearly engaging in combat. Even if you have no idea who Scorpion and Sub-Zero are you can clearly tell they're engaged in a fight, which is much more telling than just close-up portraits of the characters or a logo. Would I like it if the box was just the dragon logo? Of course, as a longtime MK fanatic I think having only the dragon logo would be sweet but from a marketing perspective, that doesn't tell me anything about the game from just a glance.

AWESOME!!! I love the box art, got my two favourite characters on it so no complaints there! Also I knew it was going to be the 19th, Gamestop Canada had it published for months now, same with IGN and Gamespot. I cant wait til April now!

I'm with those who'd prefer that dragon logo mock-up we've had for a while. This looks just fine, but the mock-up had that awesome "classic" look to it. And the release date is perfect. That's the week right after I get laid off for the season, so I'll have all the time in the world to spend with this thing.

I can dig the box art and everything but I hate to say this but MK seems to be following SF4 in everyway. Ken vs Ryu on the cover = sub vs scorpion

I like the cover. It could be something simple like only the logo, but it's not bad at all. As for the release date, too bad I will be studying in this time and have no time to play, but I was already expecting that

i don't mind the initial & this one , this cover to me keeps in sync with the kollectors edition figures (presuming sub is doing that stance on the other book end). they can put tinky- winky, tipsy,lah-lah & poh if they like ill still get game as im sure others will too

i'm very exited that they finally revealed the date... but that's far from now... april... and i also think the cover of the game is meh... they could have just put the dragon logo at the cover and that would be nice...

I think it would look better without any characters on the cover. But I do love the illustration. Although, I wish they would ditch the Kratos bar on the PS3 version. If they must advertise his presence, then how about putting a Kratos sticker on the plastic wrap for the game box? Or putting him on the back. I just don't think he should be on the front. But still, the picture looks really nice.

That box art SUCKS. I really liked the more ambiguous one from before. I guess the story is gonna focus on the Scorpion/Sub rivalry? On the bright side, I dig the new banner at the top of the forums.

Uh nooo. They are on the cover because they're the face of Mortal Kombat. Simple.

I like it alot myself. It has my 2 fav characters on it and some cool color schemes

I like SubZero and Scorpion but this game has more than just 2 characters. I agree with others that the cover should be just the logo. I made a cover of what it would look like.

I prefer the logo like the pic he posted. Either way it still looks good IMO.

yes the dragon logo speaks for itself and should have been used by itself. that being said - i still like the box art
