Today we've got the first confirmation of the assumption that Mortal Kombat 9 will be returning to it's former M rated glory, after the T rated Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. That confirmation comes from Ed Boon's personal Twitter stream via a series of updates earlier today while discussing some motion capture work that was in progress at for Mortal Kombat 9.

Ed Boon (@noobde): Motion capturing special moves & fatalities today....they are kind of sick !!

Ed Boon: Carlos & Rick O. doin some kool fatalities. I hope we aren't taking these too far. :(

Me (@McCarron): @noobde If you are not sure if you are taking them too far, that means you can go further.

Ed Boon: @McCarron U r absolutely right. People want an M-rated MK....dammit we will give them an M-rated MK.

Ed Boon: still...they are sick. :

I think this is great news, as it shows that the MK Team is attempting to push the envelope of the M rating in Mortal Kombat 9. I believe they will be amping up the violence to a level which is expected from Mortal Kombat. It sounds very much in the direction the team was going in before the DC Comics crossover opportunity presented itself. That would be great news, as it means they have had plenty of time to let ideas grow and evolve over the past few years. I know I personally can't wait to see it.

Credit for this story goes to Mortal Kombat Online. Since their story includes my Twitter name @McCarron, I figured we should get around to posting it now to let our readers know from me directly. You can also follow TRMK on Twitter as well as the fun to-follow Mortal Kombat Re-Tweets who reposts fun Mortal Kombat references found on Twitter all week long.

As a funny side note, Ed also threw in a great joke later giving a new subtitle to Mortal Kombat 9: "Attack of the Nuns: Get in the Habbit !!". Seems that he has dropped the "Attack of the Dogs" line and added in Nuns instead.

Well you just gotta love that. Though, how much Violence does an M rating allow? For us, over the top gore will be classified as MA15+ (Australian). I'm not sure if an M for you Americans is MA15+ for us.

Thanks for bringing it back up to the top (of the ESRB rating scale 0_o). Hopefully it will turn out to be great.

I haven't bought an MK game since MKSM. I just find the replay value on the new MK fighters to be lacking. The challenges aren't how they were like in the 2D games with a whole bunch of different characters lined up to fight. MKDA sucked for this reason, and I don't think I lasted longer than a month playing it. After MKA, I think it's going to be really hard for MK to out beat that roster since just about every MK character was in it, and it reminds me of MK Trilogy where after that game they switched to 3D MK. I still find MK Trilogy to be the best MK game due to the replay value even if some would disagree because of the bugs in that game, which I don't find noticeable unless you're actually looking for them. I hope they spend more time on the fighting aspect of the game this time instead of spending so much time on a Konquest mode. We have storyline games already (MKSM was good) so I think for the fighting games they should just focus on the fighting part of it. I don't know about the newer games such as Deception and MKA, but the Endurance rounds in the 2D MKs were fun where you had to fight 2-3 characters one after the other. It added more challenge to it.

I understand, but why they cant and never hold to that idea is beyond me. I also find it funny that I post the same "story" on another MK forum, and it shows up almost identically some 30-40 minutes later on MKO.

This just put a big smile on my face. I know we all saw it coming a mile away, but still, I don't smile much these days. I'll take it.

With as much crap other games get away with, (god of war with boobs, blood, ripping people apart, Gears with chainsawing someone in half, head shots that splatter) i dont see why MK shouldnt be able to get away with this kind of things too. Yeah thats right, bring on the first topless female MK character who rips people apart, chainsaws them in half and makes their head splatter...lol

Besides fatalities did you ask him about secret characters and other secrets like in MK and MK2? I mean have non-selectable secret characters like Jade, Smoke, Noob Saibot from MK2 or similar to Gouki and Gouken in SFIV

Yeah, its been dissapointing with hidden things within the games as of late. I want that feeling back in games that there are things waiting to be unlocked. Searching for them is half the fun.

Be freaking awesome if Boon went to the MK fans this time, and allowed more of an MK community hands-on into the development of the new game. I am sure the community has some good fatality ideas floating around, ideas on some cool new characters, and who we like to see return. I know its asking a lot, but it would be awesome if it happened.

Personally, I would like to see some disemboweling. Dismemberment, stabbing and burning are getting old.

This honestly doesn't surprise or excite me. I'm sorry, but it doesn't. We all knew it was going to be an M rated game from the get-go, I just don't see what's to get excited about here.

But MKSM did the most messed up, terrible shit to the story ever. I still consider it completely non-canon. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I want the WHOLE PACKAGE. Story, graphics, gameplay. MK has always delivered on story and graphics, but for as long as I can remember it's always been a JOKE as far as gameplay is concerned. I don't want them to sacrifice a good story, or konquest mode, or anything else for the sake of better gameplay. You shouldn't need to. That's what MKvDC did, and look how long ago I stopped playing that. MKDA didn't last a month for you? MKvDC didn't last a week for me. Because it had NOTHING but fighting.

Why not turn MK into a daytime soap opera and put it in ABC's weekday lineup if all they're going to focus on is storyline and throw gameplay to the back of the bus? Gameplay makes a game. Storyline gets old after you've read and heard it all, but gameplay makes you want to play the game. In this day and age with DLC, there shouldn't be any reason not to have that in the games. Just think of DLC in MKSM and using characters like Kintaro (instead of hacking the game) to complete the game. That would add even more replay value to the game. Same should be done with the fighting games and adding more characters to the game via DLC instead of just making another MK game with them in it.
June 23rd, 2009 10:39 AM CST - Glamador
Does nobody ever read what I type? Soap opera...good grief. I'm just saying I want people to stop saying "screw the story gimme the gameplay" when they shouldn't be separate! I say GIVE ME A GOOD GAME. That means I need to be entertained for a good period of time being both intellectually and physically satisfied. That means gameplay that doesn't get old after 30 minutes and a story that lasts longer than a day! I don't want it to be a daytime soap anymore than I want the gameplay to suck eggs. I want IT ALL. They've already got a great team doing story and graphics, I'm saying I don't want a good aspect of a great franchise to go out the window just to satisfy your complaints. I never want the MK team to think story doesn't matter because it's a principle reason behind why I love MK. As I said already, MK's gameplay has NEVER been one of the greats, but it has always managed to captivate me anyway. And the last two entries in the series have not managed to captivate me at all with either gameplay or content.

I just hope we don't get any of that stupid babality, animality and friendship shit. And a better boss. Blaze was so generic. And, please, no Nightwolf.

I love MK, I love it to the core even though they fell from grace with the whole failure of Armageddon thing. It was a great game don't get me wrong, but seeing as how the end would've come, you could expect an even bigger climax than what they gave. I can't wait to see this Mk9: Attack of the nuns! Funny! and I'm sure that this will be a great game seeing as how they have once again used the unreal engine 3! As someone mentioned they should focus much more on the fighting rather than the konquest. It's good but doesn't have to over shadow the fighting aspect of arcade and versus modes. I really hope they change the fighting dynamics similar to Dead or Alive, my current favorite fighting game, while I am waiting for Mk9 for win the top spot again. The fighting can be so much better than it is in MK vs DC and especially Armageddon. But all in all because I really love Mk, I think it will be a really good game, that is if people just spot trying to find any and every flaw they could ever hope to find so that they can appreciate the success and entertainment of the game.

What's wrong with Nightwolf? I think he's ok.
October 25th, 2009 4:53 PM CST - Angel
Differences of opinion. In my experience quite a number of peeps tend to be alright with him, he certainly doesn't have Stryker's hate. On the list of fav. MK character he ius normally 3/4 the way up. Guess its changed since I last saw a MK popularity result.

More bloody and violent fatalities? That is exactly what MK9 needs. I hope some of the new characters are more original though, how many ninja's does one game need?
