Yeah.... So I suck at this game....

I've been maining Noob and I have to say, this thread was encouraging. I've been trying to chain up some simple combos with him, but I find it to be pretty difficult. In the past, I tend to play aggressive and I think Noob can be pretty relentless without necessarily spamming. Cyrax and Nightwolf are the only other two that really appeal to me, but for different reasons. So, like the others have said, OP, try the other characters out and see what you find. If you find yourself back with Noob, then you'll have to practice, practice, practice. There's no shame in only dabbling with online until you get better control of a character.

I also play an aggressive Noob, but mid-screen is where his best game is at. His shadow's are quick, and makes your opponent guess low or high, and soon they'll stop blocking and try to close distance by jumping towards you instead and that's when you add the shadow up-kick into your game.

Sadly I don't think it's possible to chain any of Noob's combos together from midscreen, all of his combos ends with a knock-back kick except for his dinky FP.BP link. In the corner though you can chain two combo strings, or you can land one string and chain fp.shadow kick about 4-5 times before they hit the ground. You can add in 2-3 more hits if you throw out a EX shadow kick.

You can't fully rely on Noob's combos because of his start up time and you really need to know the distance/hit-box of his combo strings for it to be semi-safe. I mostly do combos as whiff punishment.

Another tip for Noob players, after landing a teleslam you're at the max range where his B.FP will hit and you can do his B-FP.BP.FP.BK.teleslam string. The second hit of that combo will whiff, but everything else will connect.

YAY! 10 Hit, 50% Combo with.....

Ermac.

Who is supposed to be easy to combo with. But hey, it's two digits :D

TO bad that most of ermac combos you cant execute in online play because of the massive lags... most of the time i cant even get a jump/punch off after force push (is it called like that? dunno) because it takes ONE second to register my jump even if i execute it during special moves... its a complete joke imho. i will try other charakters online, i think charakters like noob, scorpion, smoke are better, where you can just sit there and spam 2-3 specials at a good timing window and chain in some punches withoput any problem. i also can not imagine how stupid it would be with kunglao and his combos with that massive lags.

I actually created an account here just so I can respond to this thread.

OP, I feel you big time. I'm going to "one up" you even, and state that I was actually a regional champion back in the 90's with MK, MK2, and MK3. I was that kid that could go to the arcade with $2.00 and be able to play all day long because I'd never lose. Me and my buddy tag teamed on MK2 about a week after its release to unlock Smoke after 50 straight wins. I was the shit back then plain and simple (sorry, trying to be as modest as I can to emphasize how I feel).

However I just ventured online last night for the first time since I got the game Tuesday, and I failed....HARD. Granted I haven't played an MK game in over 10 years, but knew that a lot has changed since MK3. Still, even as I was getting my ass handed to me I was enjoying every dam second of it, I love this game.

I got a bit disappointed though because even choosing other fighters that had crappy stats like me, I still got my ass handed to me. It seems like everyone either plays Scorpion, or they use some character and just spam the hell out of one move over and over.

So I too started using Noob like the OP. And thanks to reading this thread, I'm learning that he may not be good for a noob like me.

I want to say I appreciate everyone in this thread with the encouragement they've been giving OP, seems like a lot of cool peeps in here and not just a bunch of people insulting everyone else, I think I'll like this community and stick around :)

So question for everyone....I'm LOVING the retro Reptile skin I got from the amazon pre-order (that's actually what got me to preorder with them over anyone else). How is he for a newer player like myself? I made the mistake of going into a random king of the hill and was actually getting made fun of for picking him :(

Any tips are welcomed, and as many other people stated, I'm gonna go practice the hell out of a couple characters I think before I go fight someone online.

Also if anyone wants, my gamertag is the same username used here :) Go gently on me but hit me up if you want some free wins LOL!

Reptile is actually my secondary and i find him to be incredibly versatile and he has a lot of moves at his disposal. His acid spit is great for zoning and projectile exchange at full screen, his slide is good at moving under projectiles, and you can use his slow acid ball not only as an attack but also use it as a safe shield to close distance by walking along side it. His speed tackle move is the best thing he has you can use it as a super speed dash to get right into your opponents face since there's little to no recovery time on that move when it whiffs.

I mean, I've put maybe six hours total playtime into Noob (just noob, not counting other characters/ Story), and I am god aweful with his combos and everything. I'm a real Noob.

I mean, I get how to use him; Use specials at range to keep them that way, TeleStomp when they use a projectile, and I can pull off one basic Combo (<X,Y,X,B [any special here]), but my Win/Loss is sitting at 2/9, and it don't look like it's improving.....

Mind you, four of those loses were at the hands of someone who just wrecked EVERYONE in the room....

You have to get comfortable with characters and the ones you like may not be for you in this game. Kabal is my main in MK3/UMK3 but I find him to not be as good in this game and I am having trouble pulling off combos with him. Sonya, I can absolutely murder with, and I am not usually a Sonya player.

Try different characters and get a feel of how they are. Some are way better and easier to master than others.

He just doesn't have that many moves to use, so there's not a wide variety of combo's to use with him.

Yea i'm hit or miss, usually i practice and nail tons of combos but then screw them up or forget them in game. I hate how it shows your record in the chat room, it makes me look better than I am from beating up on my buddies haha.

Which move is the speed tackle? (sorry)

Also, thanks for the encouragement, mind if I ask who your primary character is?

B, F BP

As a fellow MK-UMK3 player that stopped playing when it went 3-d, I can relate to you a lot man. Definitely try out other characters in practice mode. I've been having a lot of success with Ermac.

I was having trouble when I started too.

I thought Sektor and Reptile were going to be my best characters, but I was struggling at first.

I got much better with Sektor, but Reptile was a lost cause for me.

noob isnt the easiest person to work with and this isnt gonna happen over night. Be dedicated and you will see an improvement

A big problem a lot of people have is not being able to branch out and get away from their favorite character. Perfect example? When I was younger, my favorite character was Jax. I even wanted to be him one year for Halloween when I was like six. (I was a bit of an odd child.) Though Jax is a formidable character and will forever be one of my favorites, I cannot play as him. He doesn't suit my playstyle and I accept that. I'm better with characters that put on a lot of pressure and fight close up. Johnny and Sonya fit the bill perfectly. Point being that you've got to practice at all ends of the kombat spectrum to get better at the game. Learn yourself and what works best for you.

And for the record, I HATED Johnny Cage as a kid.

I was forced to play Noob Saibot for the first time in Challenge Tower yesterday and I raged SO HARD. The horrdendous startup and recovery frames...I just couldn't get a hit in AT ALL. Took me longer to do the few challenges for that character than it did to do the challenges for 2-3 others.

Noob is seriously hard to learn shit...which pisses me off because I really wanted to be good with him. But I'm more of a rushdown kinda player...he doesn't suit me AT ALL. I need quick jab combos.

I'm not very good at this game either, but I'm starting to get good with Kabal. He's got some relatively easy juggles if you use his (Back + 1, 2, 1) start-up.

He also only has four specials to remember, which is good because I suck at memorizing. :P

I know you'll probably hate to hear this, but the only way you're really going to improve is through practice. Going into practice mode, practicing specials, enhanced moves, the combos in the moves lists and battling it out against the AI will make you a better player.

Also, look up some guides/videos for the character to see if you can learn anything from other people.

Good luck!

One thing that can help is to practice other characters, then go back to your original character. Sometimes diversity and trying new things makes old things easier, odd though it may sound.

Sub-Zero has had a bit of a learning curve for me this time around since he feels so different than before, so I can relate, but I do enjoy his slow, deliberate, patient power-hitter style. It reminds me of Siegfried and Nightmare from Soul Calibur.
