X360A's Mortal Kombat (2011) Gamescom Preview

Looks like they fudged up a lot with basic info, calling Sektor Cyrax and listing 28 characters. Oh well.

"The series' trademark secret Easter eggs will also return in all of their crazy glory, and you can expect a complicated chain of random events to be required in order to find hidden stages and characters. "

Hmm, that's new, hopefully not presumed.

I especially like this part:
The pace of combat is as fast and frenetic as you would expect, though it is easy to string together combos and the like. The added bonus is the fact that the balancing at the moment seems to be spot on, with no one character seeming overly powerful and the range of moves having clearly been carefully considered.

...and this part:
However, the core gaming here is going to be focused on fluid single player and online action, so if you are hankering after some of the ludicrous mini-games and such that have graced other entries, then prepare to be disappointed.

Damn no minigames! We'll guess we're all going to have to pack it in on this one and hope for the best on MK10...:p

Haha good find though. FINALLY seems like we're getting another fighting game worthy of competitive play.

They need to start establishing their own solid fighter in the same way Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Calibur have. They need a solid platform that they can tweak from game to game while focusing the majority of their effort on balancing issues and content.

the problem wit mk is that they keep changing the engine up and the games of new lacks identity,mk vs dc folks had the same throw move,i c where they r tryin 2 fix these issues but if u just gonna change the game up 4 mk 10 whats the purpose of tryin 2 develope a character?

From the way they've spoken, this is what they wanted to do all along, so I'd imagine you will see this engine as the core for a few years to come.

I've found that the general rule of thumb is, if you've been playing a variety of games for more than a decade, you can understand how they will feel just by looking at them extensively. Fighting game are one of the easiest to pinpoint just by watching, along with shooters. MK looks fast and seamless. A turn-off for me is the weight of characters; if you play UMK3, every character feels light, something I'm actually a huge fan of--I dislike VF due to how heavy each character feels. You can tell by looking at MK that there's a good balance there, where it's not as light as UMK3 but also not as heavy as the 3D MKs; it's almost as if the speed of the fight counteracts any weight added to the characters.
