The "Why Reiko" Thread

I should have clarified. I meant "playable sub-boss potential." Think Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, etc.

Hehe, alright then, that's a bit more agreeable. ;P

I would like to see Reiko's story revolve around Outworld after the fall of Shao Kahn. I could imagine a civil war going on with several of Kahn's former minions fighting to get on the throne, such as Baraka, Mileena, Rain, Reiko, Goro etc.

I have an idea of Reiko and Tanya allying with one another to take over the throne for Shinnok's coming, but then Kotal comes in from the side and snatches it from them somehow. So insyead, Reiko and Tanya pledge loyalty to Kotal, however, are still preparing for Shinnok to come take over it all by destroying Kotal's empire from the inside.

Just throwing out ideas though. :P

Lots of good opinions in this thread!

I didn't really mind Cyber Sub-Zero, either way. I think most people just wanted to see that for a "what if" type of thing. In regards to Reiko being Kahn, I think it could be cool. Then again, him being his own character could be good. As long as they flesh him out, I don't see why a connection to Kahn is absolutely needed. Then again, him being Kahn's son with Sindel was a thought I had a while back.

Side note~ I'm hoping they have klassic skins this time around. I loved MK4 Reiko's outfit.

The idea I have for Reiko was something like this:

Reiko was always kept close to Kahn per the emperor's wishes. Why he was declared Kahn's favorite was never clear to Reiko, but shortly after Shao Kahn's death, Reiko starts having vivid nightmares of his fallen Emperor reaching out to him. It is soon made apparent that Reiko is Shao Kahn's son. But not in the way one would expect.

After his birth, Reiko is given to a group of sorcerers who fuse his and Kahn's souls together. A small mystical link that would allow Kahn to enter Reiko's body if death were to befall the emperor.

Shao Kahn's years of forcing only the best training on Reiko backfires when his son's unwillingness to surrender his own body leads to an inner battle for complete control.

Originally I wanted the battle to end with Reiko being victorious, but retaining a small piece of Kahn that occasionally takes brief control.

Just one of the ideas I've had for the character. *shrug* There's so much they can do with him.

It is the same I see in Tanya and Rain, two others most people would be happy never to see again - but to me it isn't about popularity, it's about potential.

Agreed. Rain, Tanya and a few others have a whole lot of potential that NRS unfortunately hasn't shown much interest in exploring. I feel that way about two other characters in particular, but I'll avoid naming them in fear of possibly creating a massive tear in the universe.

I'd rather not have Reiko be Shao Kahn's son or otherwise be a "clone" of him. I would actually rather have him step away from all that.

Leave Reiko as a Shao Kahn cosplayer, and keep the can of worms from MK4 sealed shut permanently.

See, the stuff with Kotal makes me wonder if he really is a villain. I know Boon said he's the "big bad" and all but it doesn't really add up. He claims he wants to restore Ferra/Torr's people in one of the fight intros. However, we already know he isn't the final boss so does he end up becoming a tweener type? The idea of Reiko and the other Followers of Kahn (new clan confirmed :-p JK) trying to steal the throne paints Kotal in the light of someone defending what they have rightfully earned. I'm talking without knowing the entire story but for now, that's what it seems like to me. With that said, I'd be all for Reiko beating the shit out of him to finally gain control over Outworld.

While I'd be down for either path, I feel like keeping him connected to Kahn in some way is important. After his MK4 ending and the Kahn themed attire, he should at least start off a connection and later evolve into his own being entirely. I support retconning things that are broken, but I never thought the Kahn/Reiko mystery was wrong or damaging to the character.

I highly doubt Kotal Kahn ever "rightfully earned" the throne of Outworld, especially since Outworld has not had a peaceful transfer of power to date.

Shao Kahn also promised Reptile to restore his people... as did Shinnok. Seems like it is a way for the main villains to keep their lesser intelligent minions in their place. Wipe out everyone of their race, keep one super loyal one through empty promises... Legit villainy 101. XD

It's not broken, no... but I kinda feel like too many characters, especially the villains, are too attached to a main character. E.g. Jade is to Kitana, Tanya/Baraka/Reptile is to whoever is the main villain, Reiko is to Shao Kahn etc...

I'd like to see those characters be more independent and have them evolve as individual characters.

Hmm, you could be correct. However, with no real leader being around, I'm sure there had to be some sort of battle to determine the power structure after Kahn's demise. If Kotal was the strongest or the last one standing, I'd say he earned it. Damn, I wish they'd unveil more about the story...

Reiko should absorb Shao Kahn's power and he should fight with Kotal Kahn to destroy the aztecs in Outworld and rule Outworld again.

I'm joining the group of people who want Reiko in this game because:

1) Shao Khan died and MKX should explore who takes over his place as ruler of Outworld. If there was ever a time to have Reiko in a game, it's now. This is what his character is all about. Even if it's a small part, he needs to have a part.
2) In the original timeline he used to work for Shinnok back in the day and was related to the Brotherhood of the Shadow. Shinnok is making his move in MKX so another reason to have Reiko in the story.

I think Shinnok's goal should invade all realms and divide it to his generals.

He should give Outworld to Reiko, and Quan Chi would be pissed off.

Reiko would use a Shao Kahn like armor (even with the mask, but he could fight without it, just show him putting that) and have powers like MK:A.

Yes, I'm putting him as a secondary boss before Shinnok (or maybe Quan Chi, making him a third boss).

Reiko and Fujin are the only characters i care to see from MK4 and later, for story what VonKrupt and efelos said.

I completely agree with everything you stated. Him feuding with Kotal Kahn over Outworld has some real promise. It would be a way to give Kotal Kahn something to do that is legitimately interesting, rather than him just being "the new ruler." Furthermore, it could give Reiko more depth as a character if they explained why he wanted to rule over the realm in the first place. I wonder if they'd go the route of him viewing Shao Kahn as an inspiration of sorts or a much deeper route of having him truly be linked to Shao Kahn in some way.

I might get some hate, but I want to see him more over Tanya. I feel that there's much to do with him than there is with her.

You got the Brotherhood of Shadow, you have him as a general in Kahn's army. Those two alone could be something to work with and expand to make him a memorable character. And hey, if I keep seeing more of this guy, I'll remember how to pronounce his name better.

For the longest time I always thought it was "Ree-Ko" not "Ray-Ko." Whoops.
