The Official Help Love Cowboy Decide On A Console Thread

LC,
Get the same console your friends have, so you can play games together.
Whether you want to pay the $60 extra for online is up to you.
I don't own a 360, but my friends that do have said that paid online makes up for it with downloadable games.

If you're getting it for MK9, then go with a PS3.
If you get a 360 for MK9, then try to get a 360 controller that has a modifiable D-pad (they have those), or get a 360 to PS3 converter cable and use a PS3 controller for it.
D,F and D,B moves in MK9 can be down-right annoying, IMO, on a normal 360 controller.

That being said, I have a PS3 and I enjoy the hell out of it.
Free online is a plus for me because I don't really care about downloadable games, and the very few times I'm in the PSN store, it's to get a demo or some DLC, like when MK9 DLC came out.

It all depends on what you want to get out of it, and what your budget is. ;)

you get free downloadable games if you pay for Playstation Plus also.

The only time that I got Playstation Plus was for the 3 month trial for $18, and that was when the MK9 demo came out on PSN a week early.
I did the whole 3 month trial and took advantage of a few free games, but the main reason I got it was to get the MK9 demo early.
It was really "meh" to me, TBH.

I don't see the point in paying $50 a year, when I get online free anyways, and I don't DL full games from the PSN store, only demos.
That's just me, though.
To each his/her own. ;)

You're paying for a service, that is daily maintained, and taken care of.

It's not like if someone sold you a car, and charged you for putting an air freshener in it. A horrible analogy, I know.
Well, I don't play PSN much at all so I wouldn't know if Sony does the same for PSN or not.

But again, and I hate to repeat a previously established point more than once. Regardless of the extra perks that come with paying for Xbox Live, they don't justify Microsoft charging people to pay online. You have to realize that playing online is simply something that you shouldn't pay for. Since online play a major part of gaming now, it should be there for you to use right out of the box, not bought seperately. No amount of gloss and extra features that Microsoft offers with the paid subscription can overcome the simple fact that you're paying the price of full-blown games to play your games online when other consoles offer the exact same thing for free. I can't stress that enough, if you don't agree with that, then you probably never will

You know why people cry so much? Because they buy the 3 month, then another, then another, then another, spending 100 dollars instead of 60.

Impatience? Your fault.
Impatience isn't always the reason why though, not everyone has the money to spend $60 upfront, which is why they get the 3 month sub because they get to spend less while still receiving the same overall benefits that the 12 month buyers receive (except for obviously 12 months instead of 3).

It's why layaway exists, for people who really want to buy a product but can't afford to purchase it upfront, so they make payments on it over time instead.

I don't want free games. I want demos.

Playstation Plus is the reason I'm smashing ass in AE right now. Well, it was someone else's Playstation Plus, but still

I have about 12 free full games between my vita and ps3 thanks to psn plus. To me it has paid itself off in that aspect but when the subscription is up so are the games. 12 months is the way to go for live as well as psn plus.

Spending less?

You're spending more in the longrun.

You could have gotten 1 year, and a $40 game, but instead, you bought 4, 3-month subscriptions.

Lulz I just restarted a console war trololol

So these consoles would have worked fine on a regular-def TV? That is something I would like to have been informed of years ago... Oh well. No biggie now that I have an HDTV anyway.

I must say, I'm kinda leaning PS3....

lol, I wouldn't pay for it either. My roomate does and he gets like 10 free things every tuesday.

Doesn't matter. It's impatience. Instead of just playing offline, until you get like 35 more dollars, you choose to spend 40 dollars more.

I agree with you, that people should aim for that. cuz you save more money in the long run.

But I agree only cuz this is a micro cost in my eyes.

cuz that doesn't apply to everything in life. How many people buy a house/car alot more expensive because they take out a loan for it? When you could be patient and wait til you save the money for it :P

Metal is just talking about that aspect. Like in Vital's case when he was trying to get on a XBOX 360 Online MK9 tourney.

you say impatience. but a tournament isn't always there.

In his case, if you wanted to attend you'd buy the shorter(yet more expensive in the long run) deal.

For me, I'm only online for about 10 minutes plus whatever time is necessary to complete the occasional download, and sometimes only once a month. I don't see any justification paying for something I barely use.

Tell me more about what you are saying about the downloadable titles. I find it interesting you are suggesting a 360 since everyone else here seems to be suggesting PS3 for me, even Shirayuki Mizore who has had more sex with his 360 than he has had with women.

Off the top of my head, Limbo, Fez and Splosion Man (which also has a sequel) are all awesome 2D platformers that have made the 360 worth owning for me. The former two in particular are pretty much in a league of their own and have few if any equivalents in this or any console generation. As far as I know, these are all still 360 exclusives, and games in that vein seem to get a bit more preferential treatment on Microsoft's console.

Am I saying you should plunk down the money for an Xbox solely for access to a handful of $10 games from what's essentially been relegated to a niche genre? No. I'm just giving you my perspective on the current gen consoles, which I imagine is vastly different from that of most people on this site.

For more background, here's a breakdown of my gaming priorities these days:

1. Genesis
2. Saturn
3. Dreamcast
4. Other
5. Licking the back of my hand
6. Xbox 360

So yeah, by all means, you should probably put much more stock in others perspectives than mine. Aside from the occasional MK and Sonic updates, I never feel inclined to drop $50 on a new retail game (or even $20 on prior year's game, for that matter). I just figured your gaming interests might be a bit closer to my own than everyone else posting in this thread.

^^^ Limbo is also available via PSN. Heck, I even tried the tried the demo a couple of years back. Fez was one of the Xbox Live exclusive I wanted though. I wanted Samurai Shodown 2, which is available on Xbox Live but not on PSN unless you make a Japanese account, something which I don't feel comfortable with doing (damn you SNK).

Oh really? Fair enough, I had no idea. Not having a PS3 I don't exactly do a great job keeping up on exclusivity, but either way, it's still always seemed like the 360 got the brunt of the big downloadable titles. Maybe that's not even a fair judgment to make anymore, I just know that at one time that was definitely the case.

Now that I think about, some more recent titles like Sonic 4: Episode 2 might have even come out a week earlier on PSN. Hmm...

Other than digital versions of PS1 and PS2 games (when I cannot find the original copy at a reasonable price), there hasn't been a PSN exclusive that really stood out to me. Unfortunately, the selection is small considering how prolific the PS1 and PS2 were back in the day.

If you play mostly fighters, get a ps3. If we aren't talking about controllers, MK9 actually plays better on a 360, far less lag offline and online, easier to keep comboing after Cage's X-Ray, no slow down during X-Rays etc...

If I were you, I'd get a PS3 for:

Beyond: Two Souls
The Last Of Us
Heavy Rain

MK9, is PS3 standard for tournament.

But I doubt Love Cowboy is going to big boy tournaments so I guess that's redundant.

it's funny about that X-ray slow down.

I thought it was Slow motion, until I saw Xbox do Xrays haha.

It should just come down to exclusives. Personally Gears & Halo > God of War & Uncharted.

I wouldn't let the Xbox live service charge bother you as you get a far better service than PSN.

If you need a blu ray player then that is a big advantage for PS3.

Xbox has better exclusives.

PS3 is the better all rounder.

By the way I own a 360, PS3 & Wii U so I'm unbiased.
