The death of the local video store....I cannot help but mourn the end of an era.

As a child of the 80s I grew up in a rural area during an era when the local video store was starting to spread to small towns across the land. In my area our local convenience stores rented movies and NES games. I remember the first game we ever rented was punch out and my entire family killed a whole weekend smacking glass joe around and watching Rocky IV and the never ending story(weird combo I know). as time passed and games and consoles changed we managed to get some honest to god video stores in our tiny town. I experienced many victories in finding ancient treasures in obscure B movies like evil dead or catching a new movie on release day to avoid the dreaded movie box with a rubberband on it to emphasize that you were just too late. the crushing defeat of chasing MK2 for weeks before being able to play it for the first time. I reflect on it now that the video store has nearly gone extinct and I mourn the social interaction more than anything. I write this because I wonder if anyone else feels like I do on this subject.

This came to mind when I first saw the title of the thread:

Blame GTA: Vice City lol.

On topic: With everything being online now, I guess this was bound to happen. I remember when my uncle would rent movies and sometimes even games from the video store for me and my cousin to play. I've noticed a lot of Blockbusters and other video stores shutting down as well; it really sucks, since I have a friend that works in a nearby Blockbuster that I've known for a good bit.

We're relying too much on the internet.

If shit hits the fan, well good luck finding a copy of Steel Magnolias during the zombie apocalypse.

First the death of arcades and now the video stores. It's pretty sad since I still have fond memories of these. It's even hard to find a fighter in movie theaters anymore and there's luckily still one arcade around here. I can't say we didn't see it coming though and soon you'll have games/videos only available through digital format like psn/xbla titles have already started doing or even the newer pspGO.

As for the video stores I remember the number of cool movies I discovered simply picking a crazy box cover or also playing for 30 mins at the video club to try out video games on the snes (back then most of my friends had a nes like me and a few had a gen or snes :P).

Also here's something a found a few years back that made me feel nostalgic talking about arcades:

Soon we will probably see the end of the game store as well with xbl and psn offering games as dlc and then the last bastion of the gamers human interaction will have been cast to the wayside

It's already starting with EA's used games pass and I wouldn't be surprised if games stores started to close down in a few years. I also just remembered these automated video rental systems that started popping up a few years ago. Sad times man...

I don't know I don't think I would miss gamestop or some of its employees

Watch, in the near future, our ID's will be our lifelines.

They will be fitted as credit cards, data harbors (for movie rentals, game purchases) that you will just swipe on this machine hooked to your tv, passports, keys, etc.

Scary shit son, scary shit.

We're becoming more and more dependent on corporations :(

I ain't recieving no mark of the beast!

yeah all the video stores are gone in my hometown. i remember spending a good hour looking at movie and game titles. the electronics age is rapidly evolving.

There is still a Block Buster by my house, its a ****ing ghost town. I think my mother is the only human to go buy things at that place now.

99 cents for a rental.

Kinda makes you wonder if they ever saw this coming.

video/game stores bring back good memories. i remember renting megaman games on nes lots and renting ninja gaiden 2 so many times before i decided to buy the freakin game already. good times.

i dont know whats going on with all your blockbusters, but there are 3 here where i live. all the movie galleries have closed down around this area. i really dont look forward to downloading games or movies online. i like the physical copy. you can bring them anywhere. having to bring my computer or playstation or whatever with me to like another persons house to watch a movie there would just be annoying, it would even be annoying just to have to keep bringing my ps3 or computer to another room in the same house.
