Roster Speculation

If I were a betting man, I would be that Kenshi, Sonya, Johnny Cage, and Jax will all be story participants but will not be on the active rosters in game.

These decedents have similar abilities to their predecessors and including all of them would be redundant and wasteful.

Takeda has a similar skill set to Kenshi, Cassie is a amalgamation of of Sonya and Cage, and Jacqui is super boring, just like Jax.

If you read Boon's original comment:

"To me personally, part of the magic of introducing Cassie Cage is to see her interact with her mother, Sonya and father, Johnny Cage. I think it would be, story-wise, a lost opportunity if we didn't show that. So we haven't announced the characters, but because Cassie Cage is in it doesn't mean that her parents are not in the game."

He is pretty deliberate in saying "Story Wise" in his comment. Obviously just my Opinion. But I think it is a bit of a necessity of they are going for a cleaner slate.

Boon has also said that Cassie can do fatalities on her relatives as has Steve Beran, and Adam Urbano said that you can fight against Cassie as Johnny Cage (as in, Johnny Cage is playable).

The German GamePro also said that Johnny, Sonya and Liu Kang are playable, and Ed had this to say in an interview with The Kombat Tether:

The Kombat Tether: Many fans are concerned with your talk of character descendants. They fear that their favourite characters will be succeeded by essentially clones with similar move-sets, when they could just have the original character. Is this something the team is being sensitive with?

Ed Boon: Right, yes. It never ceases to amaze me with the speculation that goes on. We love our fans and stuff like that and it's great that they're so into it but it just blows my mind when somebody hears 'Cassie Cage is in the game...' and then they assume that means 'well Sonya is not in the game!' and I don't know where they draw that conclusion and then they go 'Well if Sonya is not in the game that means Cassie is going to be a version of Sonya and she's gonna be skinned'. It's amazing but my advice would be don't speculate on that kind of stuff. *laughs*

Well that is terribly unfortunate across the board.

I don't have an issue with it.
They are the surviving heroes of MK9 (along with Raiden), and just because Cassie has an X-Ray and Shadow Kick I don't see why those 2 wouldn't be in, especially with 3 variations.

I find it hilarious how no one had a problem with Frost being in the same game as Sub-Zero, but Johnny or Sonya being in would be a waste of a slot?
Even though I quoted you, this 2nd part of my reply is really just addressing the Internet (in general) as that generally happens to be the most common complaint on the Internet, regarding the Cage family vs Frost and Sub-Zero.

Its hard to reconcile because Boon keeps preaching "New" "New" "New" MORE NEWNESS!

Even in that interview that linked to:
Will we see any classic or previous MK stages in the game? We can certainly name a few fan favourites.

Oh like The Pit and all that stuff? Erm, I think the vast majority of them are new. You know we're trying to just, philosophically, introduce as much new elements as we can. You know Mortal Kombat 9 was really a like a tribute to the first three games, bringing everything back, all the backgrounds; so many of them were things that you saw from before. We are taking the opposite approach now, we want to have as much newness as possible to the game.

To preach newness and just keep bringing back old characters. I dont know. I just dont like it.

But like I said, I havent seen them, and if they bring them back and find some way to differentiate them enough from their previous versions Okay. A lot of it just stems from the fact that I have never found Liu, Sonya, or Johnny interesting or fun to play as. Johnny had a handful of decent fatalities over the years though.

I mean, they managed to make Kano seem interesting to play as.

And Im clearly just giving my opinion. I understand that some may love those characters. Thats why you dont see me attacking people who like them.

Someone may feel the same way about Sub-Zero or Raiden, two characters I like, and that is fine.

On the upside from that same interview link:

The roster has 24 slots on the select screen right now. MK9 had 32 playable characters, including Kratos and the DLC; will the MKX roster match or exceed this?

Yeah it will be comparable to MK9, you know it might be a little more, but will definitely be comparable to it.

Wasn't their a interview on one of the games sites where this was also asked? I want to say he replied that their is no limit, it is whatever they can finish before production date. He also talked about making as many new characters as returning old, but this was also a couple months after the first gameplay was shown so it could have of been new character hype.
