Roster Speculation

We've seen old versions of these characters, but they're all the same old age in each of their variations. Boon mentioned a character(s) that would have variations displaying his powers at different points of his/her life, as he/she masters said powers and goes from young to old.

In Kano's subforum there's talk about how his hair is sometimes noticeably grayer than at other times. That could be the result of his model still being worked on, as it's a fairly subtle change, but I figured it could also mean we might have seen his look from a few different eras.

I certainly hadn't come across Boon saying that, though. That's interesting. It sounds like he's singling a character out even more than the normal aging that we're bound to see across a couple of characters as they go from "5 years from now" to "25 years from now."

From German Gamepro August 2014 (translation on Test Your Might):
According to Boon the aged fighters will not just differ look-wise from their younger versions, but also play a bit different and use moves that none of the other incarnations has. Even though boon doesnt tell how exactly the old fighters
are integrated into the game, we strongy expect them not to be separate characters, but one of the versions in the roster screen.
If the story mode is like in the predecessor, the game gives us a specific character for each chapter - different age
character versions are the smallest of problems here and will for sure be unlocked in the versus-manu after playthrough.

Boon confirms it is variation-related here: Scroll to the questions at the bottom

As for Kano, he's always seemed the same gray hair to me. I'll take another look.

-Both characters survived MK9. Who else is gonna fight on the side of Earthrealm in the Netherrealm War portion of the story mode besides maybe Kenshi and Fujin?

This is a great point to think about. I could see Raiden's chapter coming early in this game, or (whichever) Sub-Zero coming back right off the top, and trying to figure out why he's even alive again, and trying to get a handle on the state of the world. If Bi Han is SZ, then his 'resurrection' will be unique from all the others, so it could make sense to give him amnesia or something, until he meets up with Raiden and Raiden zaps it out of him with God voodoo.

Your argument for Johnny and Sonya being two of the first makes sense, but you gotta think NRS would be hesitant to have the first two characters of MK9 be two of the first again in MKX. It's not such a big deal now that they've figured out how to prevent used up characters from looking useless in the story (Injustice), but it might still be a factor.

Is this everything about Johnny/Sonya, Commander ? I wanted a comprehensive list to copy/paste whenever I see someone say there's no way Johnny/Sonya are in the game.
All solid evidence really. Plus Ed recently on twitter said Sonya has a chance. Thats better than flat out saying no.

I don't think both would necessarily be playable during Netherrealm War. You bring up interesting points about Raiden and Sub-Zero. Raiden has always been the last chapter (in MK8 and MK9), but maybe things change this time. I see maybe 3 or 4 chapters tops during that storyline: Sonya, Kenshi, Raiden/Fujin, Scorpion seems fine. Kenshi has to be involved in some way since he helped Scorpion become Hanzo and Earthrealm needs bodies. I put Scorpion because I assume he kills Quan Chi after finding out the truth and you're gonna be the one to do that (and hopefully pull off a story mode fatality). Shinnok's assault may or may not involve the elder gods, but Fujin will probably get involved either way.

I think I'd see Johnny Cage later in the campaign as an older guy to show off his new powers or how he has mastered his shadow powers.

This is all just speculation, of course.

What do you think is a solid story mode line-up for both sides of the Netherrealm War?

Raiden, Fujin, Sonya, Johnny, Kenshi, Bi-Han (?), Scorpion vs. Shinnok, Quan Chi, Scorpion, Reiko (?), Noob Saibot (?), Kuai Liang, Kitana, Kung Lao, Jax, Smoke (?)

I don't even want to think about what kind of contrived good guy vs good guy fights they're gonna think up for this arc.

i think we might see a nightwolf decedent possily ever a daughter or a son of his, i think kung jin going to make it in as the cousin of kung lao. salazar might be erron black new name, i think jacqui and jax going to be in and then she going to replace jax after this game,ti think takeda going to replace kenshi in the game also i think liu kang will have a decendent unless it kung jin after all

This makes a lot of sense. It seems from the snippets I've read that Sonya hasn't changed all that much, while Johnny - at some point in MKX - really gets his heroic shit figured out. I'm thinking specifically of his leading the SF, which is a huge step forward for him as a character if it's true. But you gotta wonder if that comes at a price, ie. Sonya's death. Regardless, it would make sense to hold off Johnny's playable portion until later on, because he'll be up to some interesting stuff. I dig it. I dig it a lot.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see Kano ally with the good guys during the Netherrealm War. There's a difference between helping arm a Mongolian Horde while staying buddy-buddy with their warlord, and helping a warlock who consorts with demons and his fallen Elder God master. Of course, whether Kano realizes or cares is very much up in the air.

I could see Ermac having a small role on either side of the conflict based on his association with Shao Kahn. Does he now owe allegiance to Quan Chi? Does he want revenge against Quan Chi for essentially throwing Shao Kahn to the wolves?

The last unknown variable is Liu Kang. Even if he is the main antagonist, and NRS decides to start setting him up in this portion of the story, I just can't see him working against the forces of Earthrealm. Maybe he challenges Raiden for the right to lead Earth's forces?

I hope to god you're right about Scorpion getting the last chapter of the war. That would be so fitting and satisfying.

Pls no.

Was there even one good guy vs good guy fight in MK9 that worked? I guess Scorpion vs Sub-Zero, for some very distorted definitions of good vs good (but that's kind of the point, Lawful Good types tend to get along). Maybe a fight between Kung Lao and Liu Kang, for the right to challenge Shao Kahn, would have worked... but, hey, that one's not in the game!

If anything gives me hope it's that the lack of a tournament in MKX could lead to an ambiguity between who exactly needs to get their ass whooped and who doesn't. So while there might not be many legitimate good vs. good, we could get a lot of exciting good vs. neutral/neutral vs. evil.

It been so long since the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era that Ed Boon most likely forgot how much each game had. I won't be surprise if we get around 7 new characters then 12 or 14. I just hope the new fighters are good which is the only thing that I care about.

Is this everything about Johnny/Sonya, Commander ? I wanted a comprehensive list to copy/paste whenever I see someone say there's no way Johnny/Sonya are in the game.

Evidence:

-Boon questioning the fanbase's leaps in logic regarding Cassie replacing Sonya

-Boon claiming there will be characters with aged variations (we haven't seen any so far!)

-Boon claiming family members will be doing fatalities on each other

-Adam Urbano accidentally mentioning Johnny Cage as playable in the Gamespot PAX demo

-German Gamepro leak that also leaked Kano mentioned Sonya and Johnny as playable (tenuous credibility)

Speculative points:

-Both characters survived MK9. Who else is gonna fight on the side of Earthrealm in the Netherrealm War portion of the story mode besides maybe Kenshi and Fujin?

-NRS has said time and time again that this game is "the passing of the torch between the old generation and the new". If Johnny and/or Sonya are missing, it isn't a torch getting passed, so much as a torch getting put out and replaced.

-NRS loves including most, if not the entirety, of the MK1 cast in every next-gen MK game, because they are the dearest to them and they like to revamp them with whatever gimmick they're working with at the time (in this game's case: variations).

Yeah, these would be the points that I would use to show that those 2 seem likely in MKX.
That list is great.

That, and in Comic#5......
Spoiler:
Sonya says to call Johnny, and that they're taking the squad to go rescue Cassie.

I mean, if they're in or not, I don't mind one way or another, but I see too much evidence pointing towards their inclusion, and that list is pretty much in their favor.
