Question about HDMI cable

BANALITY
I have the white old school 360 that came with the HD component cables (green, blue, etc.)
If I switched to HDMI will it make any difference in the picture since its already displaying in high definition?
Just curious.

It would make a difference, but it also depends on your tv. If it can only display 720p or 1080i you probably won't notice any difference. Hdmi is how you can get the best hd picture though.

From what I understand, RBG(Component) is analog which means image quality can vary depending on the the quality of the cable itself. HDMI is digital which means you either get the best signal or you don't get one at all.

I believe that the best RBG cable will be the same as any HDMI cable. So depending on the quality of your Component cable, there should be a difference.

Actually all things being equal, component and HDMI would be pretty much the same picture wise. There are really only two major differences:

1. HDMI supports digital audio like surround sound setups.

2. If 3D TV interests you at all, your only option is HDMI.

For gaming purposes, you probably won't really notice any difference since the 360 only outputs 1080p on videos from the Zune Marketplace.

HDMI and component both put out 1080i, most of the time your brain tells you HDMI looks better because usually the sound is better. It's like an optical illusion. Now if you are watching something capable of 1080p then it will look better on HDMI. But for actual TV watching, it's going to be the same.

Now I don't know about PS3 and what it outputs. I would imagine it should be capable of 1080p since it does Blu-Ray, but since I don't own one I can't speak on it.

*edit* I just looked up the PS3 info and it can do 1080p via HDMI or component, so it wouldn't be any different there too.

Yep. They look about the same on my TV. Component has very faint noise in the background that's only noticeable up close on a black screen, but otherwise, the difference is completely negligible. If your TV is 1080p, however, you'd be more likely to notice a difference since, to my knowledge, the 360 doesn't actually carry a 1080p signal through component (you can select it in the options, but you'll still only get 1080i).

I think the difference between the two is way overstated. Some people claim it's like comparing S-video to composite, which is ****ing ridiculous. Still, the gap between the two really depends on how well your TV handles analog signals.
