Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection Arriving Summer 2011

You may have a point with the teleport moves like Scorpion's but the boundaries of the level wouldn't be shown as long as they again have the camera stop correctly when getting to the edge. They are probably not doing that though mostly because they are probably emulating it. We won't know just how well that would work though unless someone attempted a port and does it. Either way we aren't talking cinemascope here so at most they would be able to get one or two character width farther away from each other. That would affect gameplay though at least a little and unless you letterbox it on 4:3 monitors it would give the widescreen player somewhat of an advantage. They probably just want it to be the same whether you are on 4:3 or 16:9. I still think if they did proper QA on it they could pull it off. But they probably just want to do the easier thing.

Stretching the entire screen does look bad but doesn't really change gameplay. Yeah it looks different but it doesn't "function" different. It's only cosmetic.

the pit those pics looks sick lol omg yo .... if they get all 3 classic games with hd too look like this with hmmmmm mk1 stick included ill pay 200 $ ez for this pack lol. ezzzzzzzzzzzzz when i mean ezzzzzzzz its easy l,ol

I hope they have the picture endings and intro's instead of just the scrawls. never undersood why if they do a port they skimp and cut corners

even though this is not the hd collection, it does seem like they should be able to change the backghround stages, even if they can't change the characters. furthermore, i still don't see why it wasn't feasible to re-do these titles. #1 they could've packaged hd arcade kollection with all 3 original games, and the remastered/re-shot games. i would have no problem playing all new, tweaked, versions of the games; i wouldn't care if they had different properties than the original games, or different combos or anything. it would just be fun to learn an all new digitized mk game. i still stand by the notion that they do not want to remake these games with todays tech, because they don't want them competing with the 3d rendered mortal kombat games.

A lot of MK fans would love to see a brand-new, 2D MK with digitized graphics, but you'd piss 95% of the core fanbase off by changing the gameplay.

Yeah, matching frame for frame with new actors in HD would be menacing. However, what about just going in an all new direction with new actors. MK10 or sumthin should be HD, digitized, and then you wont hurt the community (while some of us are indeed open to change, alot of us are babies when it comes to change ex. cyber-subby). Its a win-win. We get a new game in HD, and the classics go unscathed. Whats going on is anyones guess, but i dont think WB is in the business of losing money. Hiring new actors for a project, then scrapping it is definitely losing money.

Though I'm stoked for this release, one thing bothers me....

I already bought MK2 off of PSN a few months back, so I hope it's possible to download 1 and 3 separately.....

Matching frame by frame would be hard. But if they matched the costumes, lighting, and had actors with similar builds as the original actors, they could upscale the original sprites and then use a combination of refilming and photoshop using the original sprites as a guideline to make the sprites HD & make sure everything fits into the correct hitboxes. Unless the hitboxes are per pixel on the sprites (which I don't think is the case), they should be able to use the refilming as is for a lot of animations that aren't really dependent on exact hit boxes (stance, being hit backwards, being uppercut, walking).

There are also other options-- using 3D models is one. One of the threads here which showed that XNA Lara program posing the sub-zero and scorpion sprites in their MK1 stances looked pretty damn good.

ALSO, this is all predicated on NRS not having any of the original film footage. If they DO have the original film footage, its a whole different story as they may be able to recapture that in a higher resolution. I've seen some footage of MK1 captures of Cage and Kano floating around on the net and the quality looked like it had degraded a lot so that may not be usable, but I'm sure the MK3/UMK3 filming could be reused as its on betamax which was a lot higher quality.

This release of MK2 should be slightly different, from what I've read. It's supposed to be an "arcade perfect" port, whereas the MKII that's already on PSN was certainly not. Hopefully, WB is using the correct wording. And, to answer your question, the three games will be sold as a bundle, so for $10, you buy them all. Just think of it this way: MKII on PSN was $5. This 3-game bundle is $10. So, technically, you're buying MK1 and UMK3 for $5 a piece, just as you did for MKII. Feel any better? ;-)

Burbank, Calif. – May 12, 2011 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announces Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection for PlayStation®Network, Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC. For the first time ever, <b>the original Mortal Kombat arcade trilogy</b> - Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and <b>Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3</b> - have been brought together into a single collection which will be available for download in late summer 2011.

What they said in the press release is not entirely true. It is not the original MK arcade trilogy, as the original arcade releases were MK1, MK2 and MK3. Later on they released UMK3.

Liar Liar pants on fire...

But still glad they're releasing this... this will be a must-buy for me!

I love MK4 i dont see why most of you hated it i personally loved it as 1 of the best MK games released in the Arcades and i would love to see if maybe NRS can pull of of Adding a perfect and i mean perfect Arcade version of MK 4 Revision 3 included with this Arcade classic MK release. I mean MK4 was released out in the arcades so why cant it be included in this release and for those of you that didnt like i have a simple solution for you, Dont play it.

It's prolly not included because it's 3D. NRS has made a concerted effort to pull Mortal Kombat totally back into the 2D-style again. This release is the second big step back into the 2D direction. I don't expect them to split their focus between 2D and 3D. I'm not an MK4 hater, just stating a reason that I immediately thought of when people started clamoring for MK4.

It's mostly 2.5D gameplay though with gameplay much like the first three games. The only thing that makes it "3D" is the sidestep function which didn't work very well and was very limited. Remove that (or have it be toggle-able with an option) and it would be just as 3D as MK9. As in, only the graphics are 3D. MK9 is considered "2D" by many people even though the graphics are rendered in full 3D. Now if you where to use that reason for MK:Deadly Alliance through Armageddon that would make more sense... as in those games you could easily walk in any direction on the 3D plane.

IMO MK4 was a lot like 3 when it comes to gameplay except they removed most of the dial-a-combos in favor of some universal ones and added in the aforementioned limited sidestepping and weapons. (Which where pretty useless as you lost them so easy) And I agree that since it was in the arcade it belongs in an arcade collection. It was the last MK to have HP, LP, HK, LK, BLK, RUN and the juggle combos associated with that layout.

It was also hardly done any justice at home especially in the original release where they greatly reduced the graphics and didn't even bring a true to the arcade rendition even for the one system out of those three that could have handled it with the right hardware inside (PC.. it was made with Pentium 133Mhz in mind when systems double that containing 3D cards where already out). And wasn't done justice even in MKG because that was limited to a failing system and was buggy.
