TBF, the reason there were less hero deaths in X was
1.) 9 already slaughtered half of the forces of light, I think they wanted to give the good guys a break in terms of deaths
2.) Most of the main cast of X were new characters, can't kill off the next gen before they even have a chance to stretch there legs.
X also featured:
1.) Raiden coming face to face with his past consequences in the form of the revenants, having to face Liu Kang and Kung Lao, two people who were like his children, two people who he failed.
2.) Hanzo putting his decades long feud with Sub-zero and the Lin - Kuei to an end after discovering the person he had served had been his families true murderer and that his own rage and actions have been built on lies.
3.) Raiden getting corrupted by the Jinsei and becoming Dark Raiden, who then proceeds to torture and behead Shinnok.
While certain parts of the story were silly and cheesy in the usual MK sort of way, I don't think it's fair to say there story-lines no longer have dark moments to them.
