Mortal Kombat 11 General Discussion Media Thread

While writing in MK has never been Shakespeare, I think it's a little much to immediately assume the story is going to be basic and the villain one dimensional without playing it yet. Like Miscura said I could be wrong here but still. And on the point of having set lore, while the background and lore of MK has been switched around a bit between the old and new timeline, I would say the last few games have stayed pretty consistent in terms overall plot and setting, and with Kittleson on board we might get some solid pacing and characterization as well (if Frost is in, please for the love god don't just make her a power hungry psycho again).

Not really. I am using previous works for reference. Which is 100% supporting my claim so far. Why should MK11 be different? Cause they use cinematic engine? Or got Kittelson to write? He writes what he is given to write. I expect more consistency and better lines (bloody hell MKX dialogue was a cheesefest, and MK isn't known for sophisticated dialogues, but MKX was something else), but nothing more. As long as they don't have a set lore, you can't expect multi dimensional villains or sophisticated story.

For things like that to happen, rules need to be set. How every world operates, hierarchy system, how this entire bloody Tournament works, and what are the rules. Hell even write some history, so people would know the foundations of the world. As long as there is none of that, I can safely assume that we will get Hollywood level stories.

As for Frost.... let me check. If Kittelson is writing here, that means... according to the comic HE WROTE.

Frost is an orphan, arrogant, likes to do smoking gun shit (talk before delivering the final blow) and in the game she is reckless in stupid way. Attacking Scorpion against Sub Zero's orders. Yeah... MKX Frost sounds like a power hungry psycho. Ah. But maybe Sub Zero will be able to teach her some manners between MKX and MK1.... aaand MK11 starts RIGHT AFTER MKX. So yeah. The Frost we saw in MKX, is the Frost we will get. An idiot. Thanks NRS.

Well to be fair, while much of the lore and rules have not be expressly stated in 9 and X, it is there, you just need to look for it, heck some people have gone out of there way to write a concise background synopsis on both the history of the MK verse and the rules of the tournament based on what has been stated and created by NRS. So yea, while some parts of the lore are shaky, a good chunk of it is pretty solid all in all.

Also think you're remembering some things wrong from X there, since the last time we see Frost is Five years before the main story takes place (the Sub zero tea sit down) so who knows what she's been doing since then, there's still a possibility that they can do something else with her (obviously we won't know for another two months).

Honestly games like MK11 are not exactly story telling friendly. They'd need to something like Deception for that.

The Krypt mode sounds really interesting. "Run 5 miles" "Spear 50 corpses"
Makes me wonder if they might combine Konquest with the Krypt. I don't think we saw a Krypt option on the menus. Only the Kollection screen iirc

Mah man... I eat, breathe and live in MK Lore. The only thing I haven't seen related to MK was... sigh... Defenders of the Earthrealm. But it isn't canon so who cares.

Generally on surface, MK Lore looks consistent, but if you look under the hood, there is nothing even close to "SOLID". Come on really? There are consistency issues in original timeline to begin with. Now add new timeline, inconsistencies betweens game and comics, characters doing 180 out of nowhere... if that is what we call solid nowadays, then I am a Santa Claus, cause I have some pubes on my chin.

I am not remembering anything wrong. 5 years is nothing in MK Story. Frost is a fan service, not a well established char. What do you think they gonna do to her? Add a whole new backstory, give her personality? Dead Alliance Frost was born just to give a female Cryomancer. They gave her the most throwaway story, just to make her relevant enough to justify her position in MK lore.

MKX comics and cameo in game already cemented her personality. She is selfish, arrogant and power hungry. She likes to be the queen. The top dog. One way or another.

She was the best fighter in underground arena.
She was shown to be the only one to approach Sub Zero.
She flaunts her powers everywhere.
She is bloodthirsty, judging by her experience in underground arena and the fact that she attacked Scorpion, even after YEARS in Lin Kuei temple.
She will definitely have a grudge against Casie for beating her. Kittelson is writing the story after all.
So if Casie is on the side of Good. Where does that put Frost? What is the best way for her to get that spotlight? Obviously the evil side.
So the only difference we will see in 5 years, is that she finally got her own outfit and didn't steal one from Sub Zero's closet.

Pretty much. That's why the moment I heard that game will focus on ESports I realized that we will be getting a Hollywood style story mode with nice cinamtics. And that's it.

4 years is not enough to make an Esports focused game and an open deep story.

That would be cool, but something tells me we will get the MKX Krypt 2.0.

Judging by achievements, you will be able to shoot spears now. :D

HOLY SHIT! Pre-ordered.

But on a more serious tone, I'd play a game where I could just immerse into MK's lore fully, maybe even with CO-OP. Who knows, maybe in the next 6 years...

I agree that MK lore is there and is interesting. It's too bad that NRS doesn't just go big with it.

Don't know what Esports has to do with anything, but okay. Look its clear you don't have high hopes for the story and characters, and that's fine you do you. But at the same time I think we should go into this new game with at least some level of optimism for both the story and characters. Like I just personally think a lot of pessimism feels unhealthy. Also on the point of Frost, while you may be right, let's not forget the massive leap in developement for Scorp from 9 to X (being the posterboy has its perks I know, but still).

Little Aside: I am really excited to see how the Krypt will be this time with what little info we know about it.

The "x character needs to be brought back because of tournament players" has always been the stupidest argument to me. Like how so many people said the only reason Kung Lao was in MKX was because the tournament players wanted him. But that makes no sense. Tournament players like whoever is good.

Cassie, Erron Black, Alien and Tanya are the characters who took the most majors for MKX. None of them were in MK9.

For educational purposes. Esports focus means, that devs concentrate more on longevity of the game (as a service). All characters are created with balance in mind, backstories are after thought. Modes like towers, netcode and player interface takes priority. Online section takes priority over single player experience. They have to create enough content to keep as many people engaged as possible. Meaning that story mode gets limited resources. Things like lore get almost no attention. (I mean hell look at MKX Krypt. We got concept art, and that's it. Which was nice, but nothing to do with lore)

Tower endings could mean something. Like Jax being dead AGAIN (that's why he is sitting out), but they don't contribute much to the world.

I don't have any hopes. I am being a realist. Nor pessimistic, nor optimistic. I can see the limits they have, and set my expectations to realistic standards. Having even little of experience in game development also helps, as that means I don't fantasize that Devs can just snap their fingers and make things happen. It helps to gauge the amount of resources they have and how much far they can go for each section.

Really?... you're using Scorpion out of all characters? Scorpion is literally sitting at the very top of FAVORITES in NRS, while Frost didn't even get her own outfit in MKX, while every other NPC got something for themselves. That gives a very clear image of where she sits at.

Will they give her interesting moveset? Yeah. I can have expectations there, as it is the area where they are concentrating right now. Will she be a low tier trash? 90% sure about that. She will be fan service, not a lasting character.

Will they TRY to give her interesting outfit? Of course. They need to show off their gear system.

Will she be a deep/interesting character? Judging by her current track record. F%ck no.

Bloody hell. 3 more days until Kombat Kast. One thing I am glad, is that even with roster being leaked, they still have an element of surprise. We never know which character will be revealed. So I am glad I have something to look forward to.

I'm hoping the Krypt is more useful this time around. Concept art is always welcome for sure. But I felt like the Krypt in MKX was mostly there to offer Brutalities and cheesy jumpscares. Most of the costumes I wanted were unlocked through crazy tasks and online play.

I disagree vehemently for much of what you said, (and that's coming from someone who also has gamedev experience) but at this point I just feel like waiting for the next Kast and seeing what's up. Game's looking good and that's all that matter for me. I do agree about the element of surprise when it comes to the Kasts, I just hope we don't go into a two week drought after this.

I'm not buying this trophies/achievements list. It seems too lazy and simple for NRS to do so. Around 20 trophies just for performing fatalities with a certain character? This could be a pretty big trolling after all. You just need to compare some difficult trophies in MK9 and MKX to the leaked ones. Hell, I didn't manage to have all of the MK9 trophies because of this ridiculous "Gain mastery of all fighters". I do have 100% in MKX but some of them were not that easy.

The other thing is the lack of male ninjas. I can't imagine NRS not to know about their popularity and the critics after releasing MK3. I don't think they'd dare to have the regular roster with only Scorpion and SZ being in. Scorpion and SZ are given, but Reptile is the third. He usually doesn't sit out. Then there are Noob Saibot and Smoke that were not in MKX. Rain being NPC pissed many people off. The only male ninja I can imagine to sit completely out is Ermac given that there are some endings with his souls being absorbed by Shang Tsung himself.

And if the trophies are indeed true, than there will be more spots on the roster. Similar to the stage select screen. Hence the diamond form of it. It may become bigger on each side without changing the form and is something new to a MK game.

The list could be a troll buttttt

1.) We don't know how NRS is handling trophies this time, not like MK9 and MKX's trophies were all the same.

2.) The leak is an incomplete list, so there is room to add 1-2 more ninjas if they want

3.) It doesn't make sense that NRS would troll using real characters, they have to know a bait and switch would piss people of as well

4.) Achievement leaks happen all the time, especially for NRS games.

I played through story mode in MKX for the second time over the weekend (finished at launch originally). On a second play through...it just felt...hollow, I guess.

Its bizzare how little actually happens during the course of the game.
