MK10 Stage Discussion

I'm surprised that I couldn't find like a thread like this when I searched for it, anyway, we talk a lot about the story, characters, and extras for MK10, but what about the stages? These are one of the things I'm most looking forward to in MK10 because of how good NRS made them in MK9. The backgrounds were beautifully rendered and re-imagined, the only stage I really had a problem with was The Street/Bridge considering the stage was broad daylight instead of dusk like in the original version of the stage (there was no nighttime version for it either). I think stages have always been a strong point of Midway's/NRS' as there are very few stages that I didn't actually enjoy throughout the entire stages.

So more to the point, MK10 is almost assuredly going to be on the next-generation Sony and Microsoft consoles, so I'd love to see how the stages will look in next-gen graphics. I'm hoping that stages from MK4 and possibly Deadly Alliance, such as Reptile's Lair will be brought back and re-imagined for MK10, just like how most of the MK1-MK3 stages were in MK9, and I'm hoping that we get brand new stages as well. Maybe multi-tiered stages can be brought back as well? After all, they were in MK3 and Deception.

I don't really see the need to keep most of the stages from MK9, maybe a few of them like The Tower can be hidden unlockables or DLC, but we've seen stages like Living Forest, Pit and Courtyard plenty of times, so I'd like to see some new scenery for once. With that said, however, I would love to see Portal, Kombat Tomb and Palace Gates in the game since they didn't get to be in MK9.

So what kind of ideas do you guys have for stages?

Here are a few of mine to start off with:

Earthrealm: Pretty much self-explanatory. There are plenty of locations you could have as a stage, such as maybe the abandoned headquarters of the Black Dragon, maybe a stage from the White Lotus Society, or a stage from the Lin Kuei headquarters. Personally, I would love to see a snow stage of some sort of this realm, considering we've only had something like that a few times before.

Outworld: When it comes to Outworld stages, fantasy and magical elements are the name of the game. The dangerous and barbaric nature of the realm has been represented pretty accurately in the past with stages like Living Forest, and now they could take a things step further by making a large outside arena with dragons and other mystical, winged creatures flying in the background. Maybe even Shadow Priests can be featured guarding the same area?

Netherrealm: Being Mortal Kombat's equivalent to Hell, stages of this realm should obviously reflect the torturous and evil nature of the realm. There could be a stage on the Netherrealm's 5th plane, a barren wasteland type of stage with fiery cliffs, large, flowing rivers of lava, and violently erupting volcanoes in the background. You could also have Shinnok's throne as a stage or another stage in the city of Nekros, where a Festival of Torture could take place in the background.

Edenia: I would like to see a stage of the ruins of the royal battlefield that the 10th Edenian Mortal Kombat Tournament took place on. There would be dilapidated Edenian statues, just like with Jade's Desert, and since I envision this battlefield being near the castle of Jerrod and Sindel, the background could show an outside view of the abandoned castle, maybe showing a few of the royal yet worn-out Edenian designs and patterns decorated all over the outside of the castle.

Seido/Orderrealm: Stages in this realm should reflect the pristine, orderly and antiseptic nature of the realm. I picture Seido being proficient in both technology and magic to an extent. A central pyramid hub that connects to all of the other pyramid structures as seen in the Konquest mode of Deception could be the stage; the other pyramids would be higher in elevation and be further off in the background. The stage would also obviously be in the sky. Seidan Guardsmen could appear in the background and the pyramids would have neon designs to them just like in Deception.

Chaosrealm: A stage here could feature the many floating rock formations, temples and water structures found all throughout the realm. Considering the fact that this is Chaosrealm we're talking about, where laws of physics and other conventions don't apply, there are quite a few possibilities for a stage from here.

I'd love all the traps from the "Test Your Balance" of the MK9 Vita version to be stage fatalities of different stages for MK10.

One would be the Yin Yang Island with Piranhas eating the human flesh in gory detail during the rainy part. On the sunny part of the stage, a large ship can run over the victim.

This So Freakin much this. I love Yin Yang Island. My favorite arena in all of MK and that's all MK's. My second is the Living Forest, and the third is The Portal.

Yin Yang Island reminds me of Shang Tsung's island in the MK movie. If it's in the game then I'm set.

My favorite stages would have to be yin yang island, Kahn's koliseum, the living forest, the armory, the cathedral, Kratos's stage, and the MKA stage where saws cut the wood on the background and the death trap is some kind of crusher with spikes on it. Can someone remind me its name again? I would like these stages to make it in MK10.

It's called the Lumber Mill I believe.

The reason I love Ying Yang Island is because MK is so dark, and all of the arenas are so dark and gritty. However, Yin yang Island brings a very environmental natural touch to the scenery. Much like Shang Tsung's Gardens does in MK11. I just like it when there is light in the background. I also like The Courtyard in MK11 during the day. Like I said throwing light into the background just does it for me. I don't know if it's because I can see better or what, but the light in the display does it for me. MK is dark so it does need to have dark arenas, like the living forest. However, it couldn't hurt to throw in a few more naturalistic arenas in either. Perhaps with a waterfall in the background or something? Does MK have a stage with a waterfall? If it does I can't think of it.

Yin Yang Island though like I said has it's own special place because of the MK1 movie. It reminds me of Sonya and Kano fighting on the beach. Also, I just love the beach in general so naturally it just sticks out to me.

My wishlist for MK10 stages are:

Pit III (MK3, with a stage fatality)
Kombat Tomb (MKII, with a stage fatality)
Lost Bridge (MK3)
Balcony (MK3, where you fight Motaro, with a stage fatality)
Bell Tower (I want this stage to return with the f***ing stage fatality next time around)
Reptile's Lair (MK4)
Shaolin Temple (MK4)
Prison (MK4, along with the stage fatality where body parts fly towards the screen)
Wu Shi Academy (Deadly Alliance and Shaolin Monks, with a stage fatality)
House of Pekara (Deadly Alliance)
Dark Prison (Deception with a stage fatality)
Nexus (Deception)
Sky Temple (Deception)
Slaughter House (Deception, with the stage fatality, especially with a name like "The Slaughter House")

I hope that if those stages come back with stage fatalities, that they come back as stage fatalities and not "death traps."
I really hope that death traps never see the light of day in an MK game again.

That's 14 stages, off the top of my head, that I want to return for MK10.
Maybe they could do 5 or 6 new stages, totaling up to 19 or 20 stages in total.

For Lumber Mill fatalities, there should be 2 to choose from.

1. The winner tosses the victim into the spiked cylinder crushers with the body being squashed and sliced at the same time in detail.

2. The winner slams the enemy on a moving platform on the background. Then, the platform takes the victim towards a giant buzzsaw, slicing him vertically in half. ;)

For the Dark Prison, I'd like to have DLC, secret characters, and other unplayable characters locked up in there. The stage fatality should be like the one in Kratos's stage where it crushes the victim and not cut him into pieces when he's supposed to be crushed!!!

I got a good idea for the festival of torture. Have it take place at a revamped slaughter house where the stage fatality Involves Two demon guards walking in and dragging the dazed loser towards the meat grinder and tossing them in to get shredded apart. Afterwards Omni and undead come in and fight over the loser's remains

I really hope that death traps never see the light of day in an MK game again.

I would think that as long as they stick to a 2D fighting plane (which they've hopefully realized is their bread and butter) and continue their attempts to appease tournament-level players, death traps will remain a thing of the past. Anyway, I agree.

As far as stages for MK10, nothing new really comes to mind, but I've been waiting for a legitimate Kombat Tomb update for way too long. Shaolin Monks was the closest thing we ever got to that. The Pit 3 would also be awesome.

I personally think it would be cool if EVERY stage had a stage fatality. There weren't very many in MK9, only about 4 or 5, so it would be cool to see a stage fatality in every stage in the game.

I agree! Yin Yang was a very good stage, although the transitions to nighttime from daytime and vice versa could be a little smoother.

Back during the pre-MK9 days, this is what a lot of us would think, as well, that MK9 would have stage fatalities for every stage. I don't know how feasible it would be for every single stage to have stage fatalities, but I would love for it to happen. NRS just has to be creative with some of the stages
