Video games of the 90's were generally less forgiving than today's games. Adding cute characters doesn't change a thing.

^ Exactly, they were less forgiving. Those games were only difficult because of the limited continues, no checkpoints and no saves. That's an artificial way to add difficulty to the game. Today's games are much tougher.
