Is Kung Lao really as bad as they say he is?

I know my opinion doesn't count for anything, but is he really as bad as he is made out to be?
Everywhere I look, he is just depicted as Overpowered and has an answer for everything. Yeah his matchups are good, but im sure he can be beaten at a decent level, right?

Let me put it in baby terms of how I think of Kung lao.

Most characters have a scale of 1-10 of each skill they are in. (hypothetical)
Rushdown
zone
Range
Damage output
Wake up game

Ect ect.

Someone like noob would have like a 9 in Zoning. But then have a 3 in wake up game/ also a 3.5 in rushdown game ect ect.

Strong in one end, weak in another.

I think they were aiming for a well rounded character...

a 5-5-5-5-5- at everything. not too good... not too bad at everything.

But kung lao ended up being a 6-6-6-6-6-6

Perhaps a little too well rounded. Still beatable enough to not be discredited for your skills in using him. But strong enough that people notice.

He isn't unbeatable but he definitely shines above every character in the game. He isn't like a jack of all trades like good at nothing, but decent at everything, he's more like: great at everything, sucks at nothing.

Not really. People tend to exaggerate stuff like that, and he's never been so broken that he was almost unbeatable, especially now after the balance tweaks.

I wouldn't say EVERY character. I don't think he shines harder than most of the people in his tier.

People will always complain about the character that's been winning tournaments.

No. He's hella versatile and the best character in the game but he isn't as bad as you hear. He's pretty standard for a top character in a fighting game.

I think Critical did a good job explaining KL. They tried to make a solid all around character and turned the notches up about one level too high. Except maybe damage output(since being patched).

Id say the most Balanced Character is probably Johnny Cage.

eh... i'd have to say his zone game is a little weak.

Probably more like... Subzero. he can zone/ have an ok mid range game, and he can have alright success at rushdown. I honestly can't tell you a glaring weakness of his. but I also can't really tell you a glaring strength either. I guess high % combos are the best I can do, but that's only if you start landing a normal string w/o starting it off with freeze.

right on brother glad you agree.

Nah I'd say the most balanced character would be Sektor. Decent rushdown, decent zoning, decent mixups, the only thing that's great about him is his high damage.

Forgot about him! (Sorry BBBLP :D a guy in my crew offline plays him too LOL)

Yea I can agree Sektor is well balanced.

Well it looks like I . .

Bet on the right pony

I hear similar stories about Smoke and Ermac. Apparently they are too powerful for their own good aswell. Whats your opinions guys?

Id say the most Balanced Character is probably Johnny Cage.

Cage is balanced, but not in the sense of what he is good at across the whole board. For instance, he has insane rush down, but a good Sindel can and will give him a hard time if he cant get his combos in. In that sense he excels in one thing, sucks at another.

Sub Zero, Nightwolf and Sektor are all good examples of a well balanced, all round fighter. I don't think it was NRS intention to make Derp Lao what he became, but there you go. They DO listen to their fans and I expect them to do something to him (if only to asuage, raging fans).

By the way, nice analogy of Lao, Critical.

Ergh, Ermac and Smoke are a pain in the ass if you're a Sindel player like me. But a lot of Ermacs rely too much on his forcepush on wake up (easily punishable).

Smoke's INSANE teleport speed will keep Sindel out the air from throwing fireballs at him, and fighting a Smoke that runs away the whole game is very, very boring.

However, I pick NW and no one really bothers me on the roster.

I haven't played Kung Lao in MK 2011, yet.

What do you guys think of him in MKDA or MKA? ^-^

He was one of the few reasons to play Deadly Alliance, good combos, good special moves, i miss his Whirlwind Kick. I have Armageddon but i went back to MK Deception after a few weeks.
