Okay so I own an xbox 360 so i never had the chance to play MGS4 (I wasn't going to shell out hundreds of dollars just to play 1 game)

But now that my roommate as a PS3, he's going to lend it to me so i can finally play MGS4!!! (So excited) even though i spoiled alot of things for it....

Anyway i know this game takes a few years after MGS2... But i haven't played MGS1 or 2 in a while so im kinda shakey on the storyline

I remember in MGS2 that Liquid somehow got inside Ocelot through his arm that ocelot got replaced since Gray fox cut it off in MGS1.. And then everything gets real fuzzy after that... I forget why Radien comes in and why he's on the tanker... and the whole patriots thing is real fuzzy too. (even though i remember in the end that all of the "Patriots" have been dead for years)

So if someone can give me a quick re-cap of MGS2 and how it ties into MGS4 that would be great!

I've ruined everything for myself for 4 (since i thought i was never going to play it)

The Rex vs Rey fight

Meryl getting married to the nude guy in MGS1

Ocelot pretending to be liquid

Big boss still being alive

the epic Snake vs Ocelot fight

and Vamp being killed once and for all...

yea i ruined alot of stuff for myself...

MGS was about the Big Shell incident. You play as Solid Snake for a bit, then transfer over to a new Foxhound agent codenamed Raiden. Your mission is to infiltrate the Big Shell facility and rescue the president which has been captured by a terrorist group. They are threatening nuclear launch if demands aren't met as well. (Kinda like in MGS1). That's the basic plot. Raiden ends up finding out The Big Shell Facility is actually a huge Metal Gear by the name of Metal gear: Arsenal. You end up fighting "Solidus Snake" who is an exact replica of Big Boss (Naked Snake) and Raiden's old mentor from the Liberian Civil War.

The game doesn't exactly tie into MGS4 (which is why everyone wants there to be a MGS5 that actually fits in between this era) but as you will see in MGS4 when you play through it, it explains how Raiden became a Cyborg Ninja, and it further explains the relationship between Solid and liquid Snake. Also, in MGS2 Vamp is revealed and thought to be dead, though at the end of the game when it shows Raiden with burning buildings behind him you can see Vamps silhouette watching him.

Sorry if I ruined something for you, I actually condensed it a TON and left some surprises out because I want you to enjoy the amazing game that is MGS4. The story of tis game series is waaaaay too much to explain over a forum. I suggest you download the MGS Database off the PS Store (it's free) if you wanna know everything about the character, relationships, and how everything ties together.

If you have any questions just shoot me a comment on this thread on a PM. I'll get back to you ASAP. As you can tell I'm a HUGE MGS fanatic.

Thanks for the refreshment DCP, hopefully they'll be a few things that i didn't spoil for myself in mgs4

it's amazing that i know MGS1 like a book, but forgot about MGS2 a bit

I played MGS1 so many times i probably know all the cut-scenes word for word

"A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackel!" - Gray fox

best line in video game history

I also can't wait to play MGS3 on the 360!

I think there is a lot more from MGS3 that ties into MGS4, but you can still enjoy the story without having played it, I think. The most important things you for you to know from the PS2 games are The Boss and her legacy. That is what prompted the start of the Patriots and it is what caused Big Boss to go bat-shit crazy.

Also, I don't know why you say Snake was the bad guy. There is no doubt he is the hero of the series. I think some are saying that Big Boss is the hero of the series now but I don't agree with this. His actions in the first two games may have been a form of rebellion against the Patriots but he was still the villain. He wasn't just going to destroy the Patriots, he was going to replace the Patriots with his Outer Heaven. Solid Snake was just thrown into the middle of a quarrel between the two. Although technically he may have been doing what the Patriots wanted him to do, he still saved the world and is still the hero.

MGS Rising will help bridge the gap between MGS2 and MGS4, even though it'll probably only be from Raiden's perspective.

Doesnt matter if your shaky on the history. If you have at least played the previous enteries then you will be fine as this game does a good job with recaping events. This series is in my top 5 no doubt and one of the most moving games I think I have ever played.

To be honest for me I dont think Ill even touch MG Rising as I feel the story ended perfectly adding more games I feel may ruin it. Just my opinion on Rising, im sure it will be great no doubt

Haha, the constant adding of games into this story already kind of made things pretty ridiculous. It was meant to end with MGS2 but fans got mad about the ending and demanded answers to the questions and Kojima was happy to put more money in his pocket, despite how much constant adding and retconning hurt the story. It's weird, people accept movies with endings that leave you asking questions but when it happens in a game they get mad and demand a sequel.

I know it's weird for me to be talking about my favorite video game series this way but I usually try to look at everything objectively. I honestly really enjoyed MGS3 and 4 but there really are a lot of "What? Seriously?" moments.

I would of been happy if it ended with MGS1

It was a masterpiece, no game IMO has come close

you can keep your Halo's, Call of duty, zelda, mario, whatever

Metal Gear solid is simply the best.

And yea Metal gear rising, im really unsure about that game

i mean new raiden is cool but, MGS is built on Snake

I wouldnt have minded if it ended right at MGS1. Games ending with questions is kind of a cool way to end things, but with it ending with MGS4 I say it ended pretty damn good

I never played MGS1 or MGS2 but I enjoyed MGS4 a lot.

Now you have access to a PS3, you must play Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2.

Metal Gear Solid games are my favorite. Every game in the series is awesome. Best boss fights you can get in a game. Metal Gear Solid 4 does a good job of answering all the unanswered questions in the series and ends Snakes tale in the best possible way,for now. Some may think the story is convoluted and hard to follow but if your a fan of the series, you will come to admire the intricacy of the story line and how it unfolds.

@BYoung The thing about Metal Gear is there is no "good" or "bad" guy. Just different interpretations of the same thing. Neither Big Boss nor Snake are the hero, and neither of them are the villain. Not even Liquid, Solidus, or Ocelot are evil. Every character in this series strives for the same exact thing. World peace. Now don't get me wrong, Ocelot and Big Boss' methods were more aggressive and passionate, but at the end if the day they want the same thing Solid Snake and The Boss wanted.

The thing this game is trying to show is the cruelness and wickedness that is war. The Boss explained it perfectly in MGS3. There are no enemies, we have no enemies. Just for the simple fact that our "enemies" are human beings as well. We were allied with Russia in WWI, then during the Cold War we became "enemies" a decade later look at us, we're allies again. Proving what she said true. "Enemies" don't last long, they are the result of governments, borders, and war. Everything changes with time.
