Gritty the New Style?

I love the new darkness and tone to MKX along with the cleaner fonts and UI's. My only concern is this may cause the sillyness that's always been hidden within Mortal Kombat to go away. MK9 wasn't such a stark change from the old MK's like this one is. So I'm wondering if this is style change is also changing the game in making it more straight forward and serious?

I loved the goofy parts of MK in the past, especially the mini games and stuff like MK racing. These would seem so out of place in this one and no familiar levels? So no stage fatalities in this one? Also I want friendships! Way better than the dumb babalities and I don't think they'll be in MKX since they'll seem so stark against this new tone :C

Gritty is not a new style. It's been done before in MK.

I don't know how we can even make such a judgment when we know so little about the game. Cassie's fatality and Ferra being a small midget girl are two signs right there that it's not 100% dark gritty seriousness. I'm sure the Challenge Tower would have enough goofiness within itself to satisfy that need. Just wait and see, there'll be some comic relief.

That's what I'm saying though, this is such a large departure from the typical look of the game right down to the ui. I've also noticed it in the caracter design, it's not very typical of classic MK. For example the girls aren't totally exposed. Lol not saying I missed that but it's sort of expected, just maybe not the g-strings and nipple covering this time. It's just the game seems to be taking a huge new Art Direction, unsure if it applies all the way down.

What?

What is "typical of classic MK" anyway and why does that matter when this is not classic MK? The era of the first 3 games have been engrained into people's minds so hard it's in their subconscious to set them as the standard. Do you want every character to be straight from a Crayola box with their own special vibrant colors or something? I guess we need more palette swaps...

I wasn't talking about the first 3 games. I didn't demand new vibrant pallets. Classic MK refers to the style they have had shared across all the games up to 9. It's like this is the gritty reboot of the MK's. I'm wondering how far that goes. I think Injustice had some effect on their design.

I'm still confused as to what "classic MK" is. Are you considering MKDA and MKD to be classic MKs? Because they were rather dark and gritty compared to the older games. I think MKX is very reminiscent of them. I think you are subconsciously thinking about the first 3 games because we've been recycling them since they came out, and they've been convincing you that palette swaps and Friendships are what defines MK. I don't see how MKX is any more gritty than some of the other games just because the graphics are better and the saturation has been toned down.

Nah, I think part of the problem is I'm actually graphic and art designer. So I notice a lot of the small details are huge. I'm not hung up on the first 3 because I didn't even play those till way after, MK4 was my first game. But I'm considering all MK's that aren't MKX to be classic, just because the design has been pretty consistent across all of them and it has been 3-4 years since 9 lol. I'd say lot of the ''grittyness'' increase in the past games has just been from better graphics. I wouldn't say MKDA was any grittier than like MK3. Just prettier, better lighting, detailed character designs, fancy ui, etc. MK9 definitely stepped up the gruesomeness of the fatalities but that's about it. It still was colorful, gory, and tongue in cheek at times.

The new MKX has been super become very detailed, dark, and minimalistic. The character designs have changed a lot compared to how they used to be, it's sort of the same shape but totally new. (I'm not going to pinpoint all those changes out right now) It just screams complete seriousness right now, even in the maps like replacing the living forest with a straight forward one. (Which don't get me wrong I like the new styles, and designs. It's gorgeous and the atmosphere definitely gets across) Just wondering how far their commitment to their gritty dark atmosphere goes. (After watching Ed Boon interview though idk if he'd let any MKX go without some goofiness in it)

And I just want friendships because I think it'd be fun for fighting friends and online. Plus it'd make fatalities a bit more satisfying on friends since you can be nice or be cruel.

I think MK has changed over the years regardless, I mean I'm pretty sure the original MK back in the 90s was considered as dark and gritty as it gets, and a lot of fans got annoyed that it got sillier around MK3. Things change, but it will always be MK in the end. Personally I'm glad they're going for a less cartoony style than what was in MK9.

I am actually a graphics and art designer too and I doubt it'll be anything out of the ordinary. I see where you're coming from but we can't say this game is gonna be devoid of the comedy. It's just that the style is more realistic as opposed to MK9 being a bunch of clay people. Visually it might be a bit more gritty but that doesn't mean we won't have babalities or friendships. I'm all for a more realistic approach as opposed to MK9 being so bright and colorful.

There's only 1 thing that I don't like about MKX so far. Why is there that hit effect for each punch and kick? I like the flashing effect that's used for enhanced attacks and x-rays like in mk9.

Cool, go us :D So good, I didn't want to have to nit pick the new character designs to make a point. That's just my first instinct is the tone that's been added to the design will kill off all the comedy. Like I said I love the new style just hope it doesn't take away from that fun stuff. But funny you say clay people, I see that more with this one than 9. In the gameplays I've seen all the characters look a little rubbery. Not sure if they need to tighten the animations or something, I'm thinking this may just be something within the beta build till combos and variants are finalized/balanced.

It just got announced, now's the time when we get to speculate and worry :P

Speculating and worrying is all we're doing right now. Speculating on who the boss will be, speculating on who's on the roster, worrying about the gameplay mechanics, worrying about the timeline, and worrying about how gritty the game is. That's just part of the cycle.

One of the characters is a little person riding a man-gorilla. The silliness is in no danger of going away. I love MKX already. I can't wait to see what's next.

I don't know personally, I have absolutely no problem with it being more gritty and dark. It's not like the game can't have underlying dark humor along with the seriousness and straight forwardness. But because of how the story ended with the last and how grim things are beginning to look in this new MK-verse, I think dark and gritty is the way to go. And now that Netherrealm is working with WB, it wouldn't hurt to have that grittyness that the DC comics have. Bring on the hate.

GOOD! I dont get why the hell you all wont some goofy, stupid, joke ridden, cheesy, pathetic game, its evolving, and growing into the game it should have been years ago...

i didnt see any darkness with E3 gameplay. i saw sillyness.

DARK MK was MK1,2,3, TRILOGY, MKD ( dark in atmosphere, dark in comedy )

everybody said WOOW THIS MK GONNA BE DARK... i had hopes for that with 1st trailer, but all gone away with recent E3 gameplay.
X-RAY going to be repetitive as always, the look of MKX same MK9.. i dont feel its a new game.

at the end.... i hope i'm wrong, but i'm not excited anyway.

I thought that the only "silly" character we were shown was Cassie Cage, and even then that's stretching it because her only "silly" aspect was the gum? The rest seemed pretty serious and dark to me lol. Plus, it seemed to me a lot of the characters got an extra attack in their x-ray move - minus Sub-Zero and D'Vorah; plus, the thought and look for x-rays was clearly amped up because that muscle, organ and bone detail was great in my opinion. Even the creativeness of the x-ray move itself was awesome (i.e. D'Vorah's, Ferra/Torr's, Scorpions, Sub-Zero's).

As for the darkness: take an example of the Outworld Marketplace. You can literally throw an elderly woman at your opponent killing her. If that isn't dark comedy then I don't know what is.

IMHO, Mortal Kombat can't be serious enough.
Over the top? Yes.
Funny? Not at all.
MK1 is my standard and MKX seems to be doing everything right so far.
