Gaming headsets--Are they worth it?

Pretty simple question. I've got a Best Buy gift card burning a hole in my pocket, and I can get a decent deal on a Turtle Beach DPX21 (it's one of the multi-console ones that has 5.1/7.1 forced sound). Mainly planning on using it for Battlefield and a couple of other games I plan on picking up this year.

Thoughts?

good set of headsets can make sound better, but the #1 reason I use them is so other people don't hear my gaming/I can talk to people easily.

Other than that if your fine with hearing it out of the T.V. and no one is around to complain. It's not really necessary. outside of possible reasons being you want a microphone for gaming.

however this is coming from a guy who spent 99 dollars on a head set.

^^^^ what I bought.

I have the same headset that CL has, and they work wonders...unless it's MK9 lol.
For some reason, Sony locked in the voice input sensitivity to 3, and for a few games you have to talk louder than necessary.

Frey, you should really read some reviews. For these specific headphones, they apparently break easily. Try looking up a couple around your price range and then read what other buyers had to say. http://www.amazon.com/Force-Headset-Channel-Surround-Playstation-3/dp/B0042Y2F76

I've read a bunch of reviews here and there, but nothing really from anyone who can string decent sentences together, aside from reviews from established sites and stuff. I don't understand how people complain that headphones break easily, unless of course, they're slapping them around alot.

Are headsets worth it?
I used to think not, but it's a HELL of a lot easier to talk to someone instead of typing out a big ass message and sending it to their inbox.
Talk about crazy when Critical tried to help me in MK9 when I didn't have one
We had to call each other on the phone.
So fhuck yes, Headsets are worth it.
And since everyone is posting theirs, here is the one I bought myself for Christmas:

*Is jelly of Spine Ripper and Critical's baller ass headsets :x*

Unless you're an MLG player, you're not going to be a connoisseur. The difference between a 500 dollar headset and a twenty dollar one is so minute, only a few can pick up on it.

Don't squander money indulging in conspicuous consumption. Be utilitarian.

Considering I've spent most of my adult life working with audio, quality actually does matter to me. But that's not what I'm asking here. What I am asking is if some of the people I know here have gotten a lot of use out of them, as opposed to buying them and then deciding they couldn't have lived without.

^That one's my favorite

Heh. :D

Anyhow, I'm not big on wireless sets; I sit close enough to my bedroom/gaming TV where I don't need it. Also, I like the one I've cased out because A) I know BB carries it, so I can use that gift-card towards it, and B) it works for both PS3 and Xbox360. Don't have one of those yet, but my fiancee and I have pretty much made up our minds to get one after tax returns are in.

Edit: Also, CL, I can coordinate with you better about your visit with Skype. :D

My cousin got me a set of turtle beach XL1's for Christmas, but I have yet to try them out. They're only forty dollars, however, and I've read many good things about them.

mmmk :P

I can't live w/o a headset because frankly I hate typing with my ps3 controller

And some of my competitive games like Starcraft 2. Require around 250 actions per minute for me to keep up in the game. and typing out a sentence to my teamates can kill my APM.

So it's more or less a convenience thing. As once you can talk to people about stuff and explain yourself really easily it makes room for growing in a gaming sense easier. As Tabb said. I covered teaching him stuff in like 20 minutes that before with text took us like an hour and a half.

Also the ones I got you don't have to use them wireless I usually play close as well and I leave them plugged in to USB to have a continuous charge until I randomly feel like walking away from the computer around my house and talk to friends while I'm making dinner or something.

Yes you should get a headset. I share a room with my older brother and when he crashes early and I want to keep playing Call of Duty, I set my PS3 so the music and sounds come from the headset and not my tv. Very convenient.

Go and buy it my man.

Yeah, one of the other reasons I'm hot to get one is because of my fiancee. It's not very polite of me to stay up and play games while one of us needs sleep. :D Oh, and by the way, I'm no man. :P

I have the Turtle Beach X11 headset ($60) for my Xbox 360 and it is worth every penny. I shall never touch a standard xbox 360 headset ever again.

-Allows for quiet gaming
-Better speech recognition
-Clear sound quality
-Able to adjust game and speech volume separately
-Extremely comfortable

Also here a re a bit more positives.

-The wires for the headset stretch out really long so even though the headset is connected, you can play from long distance.
-The quality of sound is extremely good
-It is much cheaper than it should be
